WTAF please tell me this film was written about something more than what we are going through now.

It’s already mentioned SARS so it isn’t based pre that.

Here is the Wikipedia page...
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contagion_(2011_film)

CandlesBlanketsandTea · 24/04/2020 21:39

It's based on a disease called Nipah which had a 77% death rate.

Proudboomer · 24/04/2020 21:39

No it pretty much mirrors what is going on now.

Btw it is a really good film even without its relevance to the current virus.

CandlesBlanketsandTea · 24/04/2020 21:42

It's pretty prophetic in a very unnerving way. I love that film.

QueenofmyPrinces · 24/04/2020 21:42

I was really disappointed by the film - the end was a let down, all the intensity and then it just seemed to fizzle out.

worriedmama1980 · 24/04/2020 21:43

They don't use the word but from how they describe it it does seem like the virus in Contagion is a Coronavirus, but a different much more deadly one- it seems to affect people without distinction, so adults and children regardless of any underlying conditions, and has a 20% fatality rate whereas Covid 19 is more like 2 or 3% max.

It's a great film though, really interesting to compare it to what has actually happened.

LennyPugGoat · 24/04/2020 21:44

It is a really good film. I only rented it off the back of a thread on here about the small creatures China were killing for their medicine which some believe is a cause of Covid.

Not really prophetic considering there was an exercise carried out in 2016 regarding what the government would need to do if a pandemic hit the UK.

Lessons learned. Fucking zero.

It would be prophetic if the government didn't have foresight. But they did.

Proudboomer · 24/04/2020 21:46

Queen I really wanted to know what happened to dr Cheever after he gave his vaccine to the cleaners little boy. So yes the ending was a bit abrupt.

BumpyNugget · 24/04/2020 21:53

Try the 2016 short lived TV show Containment.

Now that depicts a full on lockdown and the near instant breakdown of society it would cause.

One for all the OP's salivating at the thought of an extreme lockdown, presumably so they can really put the binoculars they recent purchased off Amazon to good use with 0800-GRASSBAG saved on their mobile in first position.

Coming soon...Extreme Lockdown...dun dun dun...sounds like a wrestling extravaganza.

LennyPugGoat · 24/04/2020 22:09

Oh, the ending was very abrupt...

It’s good, I’ve had the DVD for years.

The disease in the film is rather more dramatic than covid19 with a sudden onset and rapid death. The effects on society and how it spreads are pretty accurate though.

But imo no pandemic movie will match the BBC Smallpox docudrama from late 2001 or early 2002. It was set in what was then the near future, and in the wake of 9/11 and anthrax (I believe it had been in the works before 9/11 but they added references to those things) it was terrifying. Again, not just how fast it spread around the world and that it’s a hideous disease, but issues with access to vaccines and the breakdown of society. Absolutely chilling.

boatyardblues · 24/04/2020 22:15

I like that it was all Gwyneth’s fault. 😆 I’d forgotten about Matt Damon’s pre-Bourne fallow period too. The Basil Exposition-style explanation that Kate Winslet gives the state governor’s team is brilliant - I understand the R0 rate much better now. 👍

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 24/04/2020 22:18

@TheRoyallingStones yay someone else remembers it! That terrified me at the time.

Theflushedzebra · 24/04/2020 22:30

I think I remember the Smallpox one too - it was really frightening. The one where it was a bio-terrorist attack, and one man infected himself, and then just walked around a city infecting everyone Shock

icebearforpresident · 24/04/2020 22:34

No one I know remembers the smallpox docudrama,I thought I had imagined it.

I watched contagion a few weeks ago, was disturbed by how much of the terminology in it was totally familiar.

Theflushedzebra · 24/04/2020 22:36

Contagion was a pretty realistic film of a pandemic really - the pandemic we have always known has been coming - just with a higher death rate than Covid19. But Winslet definitely says it's a SARS at on point - which is pretty prophetic. And a Hollywood ending of a heroine injecting herself with the vaccine to test it Grin

Outbreak - with the monkey - shows a full military lockdown, and I think the disease is more like ebola, but airborne.

boatyardblues · 24/04/2020 23:00

DH asked me why I’d watch Contagion in the middle of a pandemic. It seemed to bother him, but I’ve always been one for having a look into the abyss. Also, I wondered if it had any too tips that would be useful now.

boatyardblues · 24/04/2020 23:00

Top tips

EmpressMcSchnozzle · 24/04/2020 23:04

SARS. MERS. Ebola. 1918 flu. Cholera epidemics of the mid-19th century. The Great Mortality. St Justinian. And others. It's not exactly prophetic. One of the advisers was the guy who managed to help eradicate smallpox, which is why the science is so accurate. I'd personally like to stick our entire cabinet in a room with it on repeat until they get the message. A bit like The Operative in Serenity.

Meanwhile, let's all enjoy Lockdown! 2020 - The Great New Inescapable Global Multiplayer Game....

MadeForThis · 24/04/2020 23:10

I thought the film was realistic rather than prophetic. Shows that the filmmakers really did their research about the likely spread and outcomes of a SARS like pandemic.

Pity our government didn't do the same.

absolutezero0k · 24/04/2020 23:22

It's uncanny isn't it. Have you seen Perfect Sense - the loss of smell and taste reports reminded me off it the other day, no one ever mentions it though.

Panpastels · 24/04/2020 23:29

I've seen Perfect Sense - good film.

LennyPugGoat · 24/04/2020 23:32

Adding the above to the list...
