WTAF please tell me this film was written about something more than what we are going through now.

It’s already mentioned SARS so it isn’t based pre that.

The Bay is also a good film. I watched contagion last year, didn't it start with a bat?

Iamamoleinahole · 25/04/2020 00:04

People seem to obtain most of their factual information from films they see.

sideorderofchips · 25/04/2020 00:07

Smallpox 2002 is on YouTube

Klonda · 25/04/2020 00:10

Ridiculous movie.

The scene in the UK sticks out, with the PM meeting, greeting and touching infected people.

Then the US President touting injections of disinfectant as a potential cure? Honestly, in what world would that happen?

Klonda · 25/04/2020 00:12

Oops, sorry, think I've got myself in a muddle...

Moonmelodies · 25/04/2020 00:16

Try Radio 4's drama My Life With Flu, from December.

Brogley · 25/04/2020 00:20

Klonda 😂

pinkpinecone · 25/04/2020 00:21

I watched this a few years ago, it made me feel really anxious and really stuck in my head. I had a feeling that Covid19 was turning into a pandemic quite early on and it was because of seeing the film. I found the concept and science really interesting.

MarshaBradyo · 25/04/2020 00:22

Good film.

The bit where Kate says now get me three more - reminds me of Nightingale spaces

The part where vaccine guy notices how we are all pretty gross and it’s going to spread like wildfire.

At least we don’t have rubbish everywhere and our R0 is better. And age range and symptoms.

I’ve watched it a few times. The scenes where everything is empty looked chilling pre-pandemic now just like an IG account called empty London

MrsSnitchnose · 25/04/2020 01:03

@sideorderofchips thanks for that. I love that sort of thing (like disease research) but haven't heard of that one.

Contagion was alright, science was sound, but I much preferred Outbreak as far as disease films go.

Will be watching this thread for others I may not have seen

Wejustdontknow · 25/04/2020 07:22

I second the tv show containment, not sure what it might be available on to watch but was really good. Might see if I can find it to watch again

Ethelfleda · 25/04/2020 08:44

I watched Outbreak the other night after seeing it on Netflix.
I’m still waiting for Dustin Hoffman to come save us all.

mayoral · 25/04/2020 08:47

Like PP said the virus in the film has a high death rate and a high R0 number.
C-19 pales in comparison to the virus in the film.

Ghostlyglow · 25/04/2020 08:49

Try the Belgian series Cordon, if you can find it, it was shown here on BBC4 and it's excellent. It's about a deadly virus in Antwerp.

x2boys · 25/04/2020 08:53

I watched it a couple of weeks ago ,apparently it's had a resurgence in popularity since Lockdown.....

MarshaBradyo · 25/04/2020 08:55

Yes CV19 does pale in comparison to film.

We’re still able to keep going with many things atm, with higher death rate and R0 it would take out large swathes of essential parts of society.

The various elements are interesting, if each one changes the outcome changes. Elements such as asymptomatic spreading too. I can imagine a very bad version of a virus if you throw all the bad ones in the mix.

dudsville · 25/04/2020 09:04

I enjoyed watching Contagion during lockdown. I'll check out these others.

wibdib · 25/04/2020 09:05

Reading this has just reminded me I must have see the Smallpox docudrama as I knew I had seen a pandemic thing ages ago and I haven’t yet seen Contagion.

There’s a scene in it that still pops into my dreams every now and then - more now and when the dc were little! - if when the bioterrorist goes out to infect people initially and on a zebra crossing smiles at a mum and cute kid then ruffles the boy’s hair with his infected hand making him one of the first victims. Hmm. Now wondering if this is why strangers reaching over to stroke the dc when they were little used to freak me so much!

Not a drama but bbc2 did a big experiment a couple of years ago about pandemics and ease/rates of infection that was really interesting and easy to watch and understand. Called A BbC2 Pandemic should be on the iPlayer. They basically put an app out that volunteers could upload which would track movements with a ping every hour to see how people moved around.
There was also a local experiment done on a town where they got lots of volunteers and tracked their movements in more detail. A singe ‘infected’ resin went for a wander who was able to infect people they were physically close to who in turn spread it to others... nobody knew if they were infected or not so carried on with everyday life. They didn’t need to track it for long to watch the figures grow exponentially.

They also got the data scientists involved and showed how tweaking the infection rate just a little could have big effects, as did if you could identify the superspreaders and stop them etc etc. Explained all the science really clearly. Kind of wish that it was mandatory viewing for all involved in the government and all the selfish people that insist on going out when they don’t need to so they can see how they contribute to the problem.

Strugglingtodomybest · 25/04/2020 09:11

We watched Contagion the other night but I wish we hadn't, it was like watching a documentary. I found it boring, real life is more exciting right now.

(I can see it is a good film, I just wish I'd watched it before all this)

Umnoway · 25/04/2020 09:15

Covid does not kill anywhere near as many people as the virus in that movie. That movie is like Ebola or something similar, catching it almost always kills you within days.

It’s not really anything like what we’re experiencing now.

RickOShay · 25/04/2020 09:16

I’ve just put contagion on, before they all wake up!

ouch321 · 25/04/2020 09:17

Containment, if it's the E4 one where they sectioned off a bit of the city, was great.
But I don't think they renewed it at the end of season 1.

There is a similar series on Netflix though I cannt recall the name.

Sendmoneynow · 25/04/2020 09:26

We watched a documentary during lockdown that was made a couple of years ago, about the Spanish Flu, called 'The Flu That Killed 50 Million'. That spooked me far more than Contagion. If you want to understand how deadly a second wave could be, track it down. Or not, because it gave me the hebejebees.
