To Think That The Number One Song Is Awful?!

I think Captain Tom is an inspiration & the amount of money he’s raised is phenomenal. However, the song with Michael Ball is really not good. It would be ok if Tom could sing but he can’t & he’s not even in sync with Michael. It will probably make a great deal more money, which is great, but enough is enough.

Let's put it this way, I sell a lot of vinyl records, the better a record, the more likely it is to have scratches etc (through being played so much), this is one of those that, if it had been brought out on vinyl, it would most likely still be in near mint condition in 30 years time. It won't get played more than once (if that) but people have bought it so that they can say they were part of something, no matter how small a part they played.
Nothing wrong with that, in my opinion.

PeanutbutterJamSandwich · 26/04/2020 08:50

I think the one sung by all the professionals is awful too! Bloody killed a Good FF song

DriveMeCrazy1974 · 26/04/2020 08:53

All of you who are saying the song is a war song - no, it is not. It wasn't even released until 1945 and came from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, Carousel.

BubblesBuddy · 26/04/2020 08:56

The song was written in the 1940s. It was famously revived in the 60s by Gerry and the Pacemakers and adopted by the Liverpool fans as their anthem. It has a big association with the Hillsborough tragedy and in my opinion it should not have been used for this. The association with Liverpool is too strong and long standing. There are other songs which could have been used.

BubblesBuddy · 26/04/2020 08:57

I meant should not have been used for the Michael Ball/Captain Tom recording.

ooooohbetty · 26/04/2020 09:09

I don't think of Liverpool when I hear that song. I think of WW2. I don't like the song and I've never heard the version that is number one. It doesn't matter if it's crap. People bought it because they wanted to. If you don't want to listen to it switch it off.

User478 · 26/04/2020 10:03

Is it even ok to use a song from Carousel? The musical that condones domestic violence.

Ineedabreak19 · 26/04/2020 10:47

It's too associated with Liverpool and when you hear the fans sing it it is spine tingling imo. I agree with a pp that another song should have been used and with another singer as I can't stand Michael Ball.

CecilyP · 26/04/2020 10:48

I don't think of Liverpool when I hear that song. I think of WW2.

No idea why you think of WW2. It’s from the musical, Carousel, which opened on Broadway in April 1945. Doubt if anyone in the U.K. would have heard the song in the last 3 weeks of war! Most people know it from the Gerry and the Pacemakers version from 1964 and it’s adoption by LFC.

Chillicheese123 · 26/04/2020 10:49

I’m not a massive fan but I like the money it’s raising. They could have picked someone better than Michael Ball though. Someone younger, currently on the West End ? I don’t know. I’m loving the Learn To Fly Live Lounge one though. Dave Grohl is a legend and Dua Lipa actually has a really nice voice

Chillicheese123 · 26/04/2020 10:50

Typical scousers moaning they’ve used ‘their’ song !! You know other football clubs use it, and it’s from a well known musical ?!

ooooohbetty · 26/04/2020 10:52

@CecilyP laughing my head off here. I thought the song at no 1 was we'll meet again. Told you I'd never heard it. That's also why I don't think of Liverpool GrinGrinGrinGrin

DappledThings · 26/04/2020 10:56

ooooohbetty I heard someone, possibly Michael Ball recently singing a version of Space Oddity with Major Tom changed to Captain Tom and I thought that was what was number 1. I was confused by the references to Liverpool and WW2 as well!

Doggybiccys · 26/04/2020 10:58

I genuinely think some posters HRTFT and thinks it’s we’ll meet again!!

Ineedabreak19 · 26/04/2020 10:58

I know it's from a musical and don't think LFC fans have a copy right on it but I have a problem with the singer, Michael Ball.

Also another poster mentioned that the song is associated with the Hillsborough tragedy & this version was released near the anniversary date. That's a fair point and some feel a different song should have been chosen for various reasons.

Nobody is criticising Captain Tom Moore for his fundraising efforts although some have an issue with his singing skills. Some do, and this includes me, have an issue with Michael Ball.

PineappleDanish · 26/04/2020 11:01

Yup I said the same thing last week .

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3883850-Right-its-gone-too-far-now-Just-stop-Michael-Ball

It's horrendous, Michael Ball is all jazz hands and booming vocals at the best of times. The fundraising aspect of waht the old guy has done is amazing.

But the single is just a step too far.

derxa · 26/04/2020 11:05

It's not just a Liverpool anthem. It's also Celtic's one. A video below for footy fans only. When we see a stadium full like this again then the horror will be over.
Back to Captain Tom. Of course the recording is awful but people want to donate. And I did. He's a grand old fellow with his heart in the right place.

CecilyP · 26/04/2020 12:45

That’s really funny, oohbetty. I also bet a few people think Vera Lynn sang You’ll Never Walk Alone which, as far as I’m aware she did not!

Chillicheese123 · 26/04/2020 14:29

@derxabyes it’s a Celtic anytime also Feyenoord, Twente and Dortmund I think use it, as well as Tokyo FC !

I miss football Saturdays 😭

Chillicheese123 · 26/04/2020 14:30

Celtic anthem *

Devlesko · 26/04/2020 14:33

Oh, come on. Since when has a number one ever been good music.
the whole idea of popular music is just that, popular but crap musically.
"You can't sing, you can't play instruments, you'll go far" Grin

ViciousJackdaw · 26/04/2020 14:52

Typical scousers moaning they’ve used ‘their’ song

Typical scousers eh @Chillicheese123. Care to elaborate?

Devlesko · 26/04/2020 15:28

It's not a scouse song anyway, it was only adopted by them because a pop group of the time did a cover of it.
It's American and written long before anyone over here considered using it as a football anthem.

66redballons · 26/04/2020 15:30

It’s not a lot his voice, he is a fab example of what a collective can achieve and a new way to ask people to give to the NHS.

HeckyPeck · 26/04/2020 15:31

It was written and performed in the thirties during the war. I don't care what it sounds like as long as it makes money for NHS
