Are you going out for walks during lock down?

I haven't been out for a walk in almost 4 weeks, I'm so worried about it so I have stayed in with DD 2 years old but im wondering if I'm being silly and if I should go out for a walk a day?

OP posts:
OneandTwenty · 24/04/2020 17:24

If you can go out, and your kids are used to walk to school and do daily sports club, why on earth would you feel bad to take them out?

It's well known that some people are used to drive even to go to the end of the road, but for the few who don't, and can, going out is important.

terrigrey · 24/04/2020 17:24

Of course.
We are social distancing, not under house arrest.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 24/04/2020 17:24

Walk every day I'm not working, weather permitting.

Today, we went in to the local countryside for a longer walk which felt a bit more decadent but we saw very few people and it was lovely.

Fresh air, exercise and sunlight are important. It's a stress reliever for me as I am finding work very tough.

noidea02 · 24/04/2020 17:25

So the police make the laws of the land now rather than the Government?
The Government guidance quite clearly states ONCE per day. Not quite sure what is so hard to understand? I particularly feel for people who don’t live in rural areas but are in more crowded areas where social distancing is more difficult. Those who go out more than the once a day that is permitted just add to the crowding in certain areas and make people (like the OP) nervous to go out at all.

PurpleDaisies · 24/04/2020 17:26

There’s a difference between what’s guidance and what’s law.

OneandTwenty · 24/04/2020 17:27

what is sad is that some posters , seen on other threads, seem to think they actually are on house arrest and are getting really agitated. We've never been on a strict lockdown as it is, they would be better off go outside for a bit and chill. Creating your own prison is not healthy.

OneandTwenty · 24/04/2020 17:27

The Government guidance quite clearly states ONCE per day.

but your "once" could mean 10 minutes or 4 hours... even following the guidance requires common sense.

And if you have a dog, they need to be taken out more than once a day...

MrsExpo · 24/04/2020 17:27

Yep. My dog gets a short walk first thing then a longer one later in the afternoon. We live in a very rural area, have masses of open country side on our doorstep and rarely see a soul while we're out. Never been so grateful to live in isolation!!

gnushoes · 24/04/2020 17:28

@noidea02 - once a day is written into the Welsh legislation. Not the English. Legally you can go out for exercise more than once a day if you are in England.

noidea02 · 24/04/2020 17:29

That’s fine then - let’s all just ignore the government’s guidance and end up spreading this thing round a bit more, resulting in an extended and/or stricter lockdown being put in place.

JKScot4 · 24/04/2020 17:30

@noidea
Living in a very rural area where you do not pass anyone is safe for 2 walks, who are they endangering?
I walk mine in woods and never see a soul.

PurpleDaisies · 24/04/2020 17:31

Don’t be ridiculous @noidea02
People going for a walk somewhere quiet, more than once a day somewhere local, observing them social distancing guidelines aren’t going to be spreading the virus everywhere.

ProfessorHasturLaVista · 24/04/2020 17:32

noidea02 or we make our own judgements about how to keep ourselves and others safe.
By observing the social distancing measures and knowing our own area.

OneandTwenty · 24/04/2020 17:34

Looking at all the shops reopening and people having decided to go back to "normal", I am starting to think that the virus spreading more and quickly might not necessarily a bad thing. It might be safer for us when the actual lockdown is really over.

Alez · 24/04/2020 17:38

I don't every day, but I go maybe 3/4 times a week. It's not a government instruction to walk, and I do exercise videos or online yoga classes most days. Do you have a garden OP? I think it's a good idea to go outside for some sun and fresh air, but if you can do that within your own home you don't have to go for a daily walk for it!

joystir59 · 24/04/2020 17:38

Why on earth wouldn't you and your child go out? Even my partner who is in the shielding group has been out for a walk and paddle on the beach staying well clear of everyone. Get out in the sunshine!

dottiedodah · 24/04/2020 17:39

I have been going out each day with my dog on foot .Have seen many Mums and babies .toddlers out and about .Surely better for you than to be stuck at home in this lovely weather? Squashyhat a little unkind ? OP is obviously nervous about taking her child out thats all!

Chillicheese123 · 24/04/2020 17:40

Yes because I’m worried about putting weight on and also about general fitness levels as I usually walk loads and have an active job. I walked three miles there and three miles back to the supermarket yesterday just because .

SuitedandBooted · 24/04/2020 17:43

Its quite a simple equation:

Lots of people + not much space = Crowding and difficult social distancing

  • so take care, don't linger too long, as others need the space you are using.

Very few people + loads of space = No crowding, permanant social distancing (still avoid touching things)

  • so don't worry, you aren't going to spread anything.

Common sense people, please.

chocolicious · 24/04/2020 17:46

Yes. I go out for a walk every day. We're lucky that we have a beach ,a couple of lovely parks and a riverside walk we can access without the need to use the car to get there. Usually walk between 3-6 miles.

BillywilliamV · 24/04/2020 17:46

Its a virus not a guided missile, walking iin the outside air is very low risk.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 24/04/2020 17:48

Yes every day, we have a dog and have walked his little legs off 😁 one of the upsides of the lockdown has been discovering new local walks.

Op i really hope you've at least been out in the garden?! You're going to be lacking vitamin D otherwise....

mamaduckbone · 24/04/2020 17:50

Yes. There have only been 2 or 3 days when I haven't, usually because I've been working all day. I'd have gone bonkers otherwise. Try to pick times and locations that will be quiet. You'll feel so much better for it, honestly.

AldiAisleOfCrap · 24/04/2020 17:50

It’s not perfectly safe to go for a walk, if it was the shielding group would be told walks are fine. Rather than don’t even put your own bins out.
It is less risky then going to a supermarket though.

blacksax · 24/04/2020 17:55

It's been nearly 4 hours, and the OP hasn't been back to the thread yet. Maybe she's gone for a long walk.
