Are you going out for walks during lock down?

I haven't been out for a walk in almost 4 weeks, I'm so worried about it so I have stayed in with DD 2 years old but im wondering if I'm being silly and if I should go out for a walk a day?

OP posts:

Yes, either a walk or a run every day. I love it. Myself or my husband always get the children out as well each day (me if I’m walking that day, husband if I’m running and vice versa). I think it’s really important for them.
I would get depressed and put on lots of weight if I didn’t get out. I’m used to doing lots of exercise daily so tend to do a short exercise video in the afternoon as well with the kids if not too tired.

Cottagepieandpeas · 24/04/2020 16:53

I go out nearly every day with the dog.
If this current bout of feeling ill turns out to be just a cold I am determined to start walking a bit further and a bit faster.

etopp · 24/04/2020 16:53

Every day, several times a day, OP. I never see a soul, so I don't think I'm risking my own health or that of anyone else.

Nicknacky · 24/04/2020 16:54

Sunshine There is no one hour limit.

ProfessorHasturLaVista · 24/04/2020 16:54

It’s not one hour. Gove just pulled that out of thin air.

Punxsutawney · 24/04/2020 16:55

Yes once a day at 1pm. Teenage Ds is autistic and given the chance would never leave the house again, ever. I've written him a little timetable and he likes things to be very exact. So we do the same 40min walk from our house every lunchtime. I wouldn't say he loves it but he's been willing to participate everyday this week (I give him weekends off!) and I think it's beneficial for him.

Yes me and my children have been out walking everyday. It’s become the highlight of the day and my kids are also now really enjoying it. I have asthma but don’t feel waking puts me at additional risk and think it must be good for fitness and lung capacity as well as a mental boost to walk in the sunshine. We do between 4 and 5 miles a day. It’s the thing I’ll miss most when we get back to normal and it’s all rush again.

noidea02 · 24/04/2020 17:02

The rules are still one form of exercise a day! Not sure why some people feel entitled to do more?

Bewarethesealions · 24/04/2020 17:03

Yes. I go for a walk before I start WFH for the day. It sets me p for the day and does a lot for my mental wellbeing. I'm usually up and out at around 6-6.30 so to avoid people in general (but used to do that pre-Covid as I'm an early bird!).

VenusTiger · 24/04/2020 17:05

No - not a single walk around the block - we're running around in the garden, building in the garden and weeding - it's very quiet around here, but we haven't needed to go out for a walk once.

Flythedragons · 24/04/2020 17:07

I go for a walk about every third day. But we have a horse that needs looking after so spend quite a bit of time outside doing that. I do make sure everybody in the household gets outside in the sunshine every day. Vitamin d is important.

longearedbat · 24/04/2020 17:07

@noidea02 the rules/law do not specify how many times you may go out, they just say you may go out for exercise.

Drivingdownthe101 · 24/04/2020 17:09

We have a big garden and don’t need to go for a walk either. We go every day though, because we want to.

MorganKitten · 24/04/2020 17:14

Yep

Tjsmumma · 24/04/2020 17:15

We go for one, not every single day but we try. We avoid pulbic spaces, stay at least 2ms etc. We take our DD in her pushchair.

noidea02 · 24/04/2020 17:16

One form of exercise per day? A run, A walk....

Clearly means once a day.

  1. When am I allowed to leave the house?
You should only leave the house for very limited purposes:

shopping for basic necessities, for example food and medicine, which must be as infrequent as possible

one form of exercise a day, for example a run, walk, or cycle - alone or with members of your household

any medical need, including to donate blood, avoid or escape risk of injury or harm, or to provide care or to help a vulnerable person

travelling for work purposes, but only where you cannot work from home

OneandTwenty · 24/04/2020 17:17

one form of exercise a day, for example a run, walk, or cycle - alone or with members of your household

once a day, but there's nothing about "1 hour" - common sense should apply, you can see if you live in a busy area or not. If everyone in the city centre was outside all day, it would be too crowded. When you live in the middle of nowhere, it makes 0 difference....

PurpleDaisies · 24/04/2020 17:18

If you live rurally, chances are you will see absolutely nobody while you’re out on your walk.

Plus, police guidelines for England explicitly say that exercising more than once a day isn’t a problem.

Are you going out for walks during lock down?
fairlyplump · 24/04/2020 17:22

Yes every single day we do our walks

TeacupDrama · 24/04/2020 17:22

only in Wales is the law actually one form of exercise per day even then the length of time is not specified

and if you go shopping you can still go out later or earlier for exercise or you can combine your exercise with shopping ie going to newsagent for the paper or bread or milk

ChoppingBlock · 24/04/2020 17:22

I get outside every day for at least an hour, rain or shine. Either for a run or a walk; and a few times I've driven 10 mins to the countyside for a 3-hour 12km walk where I see no one.

Walking or running at least 5 miles a day, every day, is the most vital thing for my mental health!

ProfessorHasturLaVista · 24/04/2020 17:23

Exercising your dc doesn’t necessarily mean exercising yourself, either. So a run with the dog then a walk with young dc later is fine. The important thing is maintaining social distancing. Fortunately, most people round here are taking that seriously, although it is more pleasant to go out early if you don’t want to have to be zigzagging all over the (adequately wide) paths.

DurhamDurham · 24/04/2020 17:24

We go out for a long walk everyday. We usually take our granddaughter with us who is 22 months old, she and her mum live with us. Our daughter is a nurse, we do the childcare so she doesn't need to go to nursery at the moment while we're working from home. I can't imagine staying in all day every day if I didn't have to. Our granddaughter benefits from a walk each day, we all feel better for it and it definitely helps break up the day. If you want to and are comfortable doing so you should definitely get outside a bit.

backaftera2yearbreak · 24/04/2020 17:24

There is no time limit on exercise. Where does this keep coming from?
