Are you going out for walks during lock down?

I haven't been out for a walk in almost 4 weeks, I'm so worried about it so I have stayed in with DD 2 years old but im wondering if I'm being silly and if I should go out for a walk a day?

OP posts:
Pipandmum · 26/04/2020 00:01

Yes I have two dogs.

JustStayHome · 26/04/2020 00:07

Nope

Im shielding... Been 44 days now !

Mothership4two · 26/04/2020 00:34

Glad you have decided to get out OP. I think it is good for MH. We tend to go out as a family with the dog. My boys would not have gone out with us so much before, so it is nice to have time with them to chat and mess about. We are just careful what we touch, avoid other people and put shoes and coats by door when we get back. And, of course, wash hands. Wish I had taken out shares in some soap companies.

Ginseng1 · 26/04/2020 01:24

Yes daily run for myself & dog & maybe later stroll or cycle with kids. We are luckily rural meet the odd neighbour, social distance etc. I would go insane if I didn't go out especially in this lovely weather.

Oblomov20 · 26/04/2020 01:29

I only go out every few days. I am very very busy working at home in a very stressful new job. Dh doesn't understand and thinks I should go out every day.
When the 4 of us (2 x ds's) do go out for a family walk, I enjoy it.
But I'm a complete homebody. Happy. I don't need to go out for my MH or well-being.

LemonySippet · 26/04/2020 02:13

@DaisyLou33 yes, we intend to isolate until there is a vaccine, however long that may be. DH is extremely vulnerable, with a very rare form of leukaemia. We nearly lost him last year, and thought we were nearly out of the woods when Covid came along. I'm not prepared to face that again, so we will deregister the children from school if that's what school require, or continue to school them at home with their support if school will allow it.

Our planning has the caveat of being based on the constantly changing scientific evidence, and the fact that DH has to attend hospital twice a week for chemo so is at risk of catching the virus anyway. But we won't be increasing that risk by circulating any more than driving straight to and from hospital.

We have a garden. We can cope. Having my husband, and the children having their father, is more important than going back to normality.

Fedupofnipplepinching · 26/04/2020 04:53

I've not been out walking no. I get out of the house everyday to drop the kids at nursery, go to work and go to the hospital to volunteer a couple of times a week. we have a garden that I'm in every day pegging washing out and tending our guinea pigs and often to eat lunch. But no time in the day for wandering around. Very much business as usual here really.

LellyMcKelly · 26/04/2020 05:10

Yes, I find I start getting the rage if I don’t go Out for two or three days. A good brisk walk gets rid of all that pent up energy.

maneandfeathers · 26/04/2020 05:38

I’m walking my dogs as usual. I have horses too so I’ve got to check and feed them daily.

I’ve been waking the same route twice a day for years and usually barely see anyone. The last few weeks I’ve never seen so many people, cyclists and dogs! Where these dogs get walked normally I would love to know. Can’t wait for it to go back to normal so I can get my peace back Grin

PhilCornwall1 · 26/04/2020 05:55

I should be doing the shielding bit, but there is no way I can stay cooped up like that without having problems in other ways.

Others will say, "you are stupid, you are selfish" and that's fine if they want to say that. It's all about assessing risk and I'm comfortable with any risk I'm taking, if any.

OneandTwenty · 26/04/2020 06:35

It seems quite a few people don't understand the purpose of the lockdown? I've seen the same regarding sending children back to school - that they wont be going until there is no more Covid....

it's not just the vaccine though, is it.
We are going out, and for hours, but I am not going to shops and won't be sending my kids to school. IF my kids end up catching it, I'd rather they are not guinea pigs and we know more about the best way to manage the illness, if not treat it.

There are more and more published cases of people re-infected, but I can't find information (maybe it's not known yet) if it's the same strain or a different one. So much for herd immunity though...

EricaNernie · 26/04/2020 06:40

I hope those not walking do go at least outside for the vitamin D you get from sunshine
and i have a dog and walk her, she is one well walked dog.

GarlicMonkey · 26/04/2020 07:29

Walks, drives, bike rides & more than once a day. DS16 is Aspergers, he's also twice the size of me so if he needs 'out' to manage his anxieties we go out.

PhilCornwall1 · 26/04/2020 07:33

We are going out, and for hours, but I am not going to shops and won't be sending my kids to school.

I've read quite a few people saying this (completely respect their decision), but was wondering when schools go back, would the schools start counting this as unauthorised absences?

YouStupidBoy · 26/04/2020 07:39

Yes I run as usual six days per week and walk the seventh. I am rural though and rarely see a soul - and five times per week my runs are anywhere from 0400 - 0440 when I start them so even if I wasn't rural it's not peak time for folk to be out and about!!

StudentMummy20 · 26/04/2020 07:49

For those saying you go for more than one, I thought the rules were once a day?

EricaNernie · 26/04/2020 07:53

and Twice I have actually driven for a dog walk!
the spring flowers have been glorious.
i am trying to avoid the too popular walks, with the cyclists and joggers, more at the weekend, and have been successful.

CherryPavlova · 26/04/2020 08:17

EricaNernie. I hope you’re not driving far.
Our tiny village had lots of people parking again yesterday with numerous people having picnics together and throwing balls around in a field full of sheep. No consideration of impact on a very elderly and vulnerable local population. Cyclists draped over grass verges, again in groups.
Give an inch and people take a mile. We are not a beauty spot or tourist car park but are in the National Park; it’s not ok to make our quiet villages into festivals because the tourist spots are policed.
Luckily the shepherds moved most on with a flea in their ear.

EricaNernie · 26/04/2020 08:24

of course not @Cherry

I read the guidelines

longearedbat · 26/04/2020 08:35

@StudentMummy20 in England there is no law about only going out once a day.

Aragog · 26/04/2020 08:59

Studentmummy - in England, no. There is no rule to say that everyone can only go out once a day. There's no rule here on time either.

PurpleFlower1983 · 26/04/2020 09:00

Yes, we walk about 4-5 miles a day, it’s been lovely, especially with the weather.

PineappleDanish · 26/04/2020 09:13

Have been walking almost every day - I need to escape from the house and get some fresh air!

Walking around suburban streets can be dull but stick a podcast on your phone and away you go. There are also lots of "virtual walk" apps around - I have one on my phone for the Appalachian Trail. Every step you take counts towards distance on the walk, which at 2200 miles will keep me busy for a while.

Middersweekly · 26/04/2020 09:24

I live in Spain so we’ve not been allowed out for daily exercise! We’ve been allowed to walk our dogs within 50m of our property only. The only outings I’ve had are to the supermarket every 8/9 days. 6 weeks we’ve been indoors. The children haven’t been out at all! From today children are now allowed a daily walk for 1 hour. Maximum 1km from home. No parks or beaches open which really makes a walk pointless. Who wants to walk around buildings/houses?

Sunshine1239 · 26/04/2020 09:28

I go out a lot to walk and run as do kids and DH

I prob walk dog 2x hour a day
I run an hour a day
Kids prob walk hour and dh runs an hour and walks an hour

We live semi rural though so hardly see anyone
