Are you going out for walks during lock down?

I haven't been out for a walk in almost 4 weeks, I'm so worried about it so I have stayed in with DD 2 years old but im wondering if I'm being silly and if I should go out for a walk a day?

Most days, yes, or a run. Makes me feel so much better - calm, happy.

Today I walked about 3 miles breathing in the wonderful smells from the blossoms, hearing the birds sing (no traffic to drown them out) and noticing everything around me in a way I wouldn't normally do in busy everyday life. I came back and was waxing lyrical to Dh about the gorgeous warm yellow colour and texture of the stonework on a wall I've never noticed before Blush.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 24/04/2020 17:57

We’ve got a fairly big garden so we don’t go out for a walk often but we have a few times, not far we just walk in to the village and back. My oldest is only 4 and he likes going for bike rides so DH has been taking him out on the bike twice a week.

I think if you are someone that lives in a flat it’s more important for you to get out for your daily exercise as it’s so good for mental health to be outside.

Umnoway · 24/04/2020 17:59

Only once two days ago just on a field near our house but we saw a dog walker so I turned back and went home. I’m pregnant so in the ‘shielded’ group, I’m too scared to leave. I drove to a midwife appointment last week and didn’t see a single soul aside from the midwife who was in full PPE, I was still terrified.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 24/04/2020 18:00

I go for a walk most days but not every day as I find it so bloody stressful. Most walks I seem to be almost the only person who is trying to do social distancing. I walk in the middle of the road, stand in driveways and cross roads multiple times to keep 2m from others but most other people just keep walking towards me like in pre covid times, with their body language giving no indication that they intend to move.

JigsawsAreCool · 24/04/2020 18:02

No because am shielding but love seeing photos from friends walks

Susanna85 · 24/04/2020 18:04

Yes we take an hour every day to go for a walk or play with a ball in the local park.

caramac04 · 24/04/2020 18:06

I’ve been out every day walking my dog. I’m thinking of going out running as well. Dog is too old to run with me anymore.
To clarify, my GP and specialist nurse encourage me to run and I used to run up to 5 miles daily. Although I’m exercising indoors I doubt I could run a mile now so think I can justify running rurally.

EsmeeMerlin · 24/04/2020 18:06

Yes I go for a walk most days, I live in a flat with two young children. They need to run around and I need some outdoor space to help me mentally. We are lucky we have a park round the corner and we tend to get there for 8:45 when it’s quite empty.

fussychica · 24/04/2020 18:07

Probably not quite as often as usual as I'm not walking daily to the shops as we just go in the car once a week at the moment .
Have been walking in the countryside at the end of the road, around the streets and in the park, again at the end of the road. Haven't gone to the park at weekends though as it's too busy. Lucky I know to have nice places to walk so close. Have a garden so that's been a real godsend in this good weather.

PickAChew · 24/04/2020 18:12

Every day, usually 2-3 miles with autistic Ds2, though his stamina is getting better so our walks are steadily getting longer. We're spoilt for choice of where to go, living in a suburb of a small city with several nature reserves.

Namesgonenow · 24/04/2020 18:12

op are you around?

hiredandsqueak · 24/04/2020 18:13

Yes, have to walk the dog but I think I'd go mad if I didn't go out for a walk every day.

Yellowsubmarinedreams · 24/04/2020 18:14

Yes you're being very silly. HTH.

WeKnowFrogsGoShaLaLaLaLa · 24/04/2020 18:14

Yes I walk, for about 90mins a day.

I have to. On an average work day I clock in @ 21000 steps. Just by not going to work I'm behind.

StoutDrinker2019 · 24/04/2020 18:16

Run every other day. Kids out for a walk or in garden every day. It's a necessity here!

TwoZeroTwoZero · 24/04/2020 18:20

Yea every now and again. Not every day but that's down to laziness rather than worries about the 'Rona.

Yellredder · 24/04/2020 18:36

I've been out for about an hour's walk every day, unless I've been working.

rosebrook · 24/04/2020 18:45

DS is nearly 2 and I take him for a walk every morning, for 2-3 hours a day. We live in a flat with no garden, and it's a good age to be taking them out, developing their leg muscles and getting them used to daily physical activity. It's also been lovely to teach him about the spring flowers and blossoms, finding ladybirds and caterpillars etc. We're in the centre of London so we see lots of people around, but it's easy to stay socially distanced. We're lucky to have lots of options of places to go, from parks to garden squares and churchyards and riverside walks.

ChibiTotoro · 24/04/2020 18:45

What's with the insults? The OP says they haven't been out for a walk not that they haven't been outside. It's up to them and what they feel comfortable with.
My DCs don't go beyond our garden that often, but they do half an hours exercise in the morning as we're starting work, then play outside intermittently throughout the day. We don't have a massive garden but big enough to have a kick around, play in the sandpit, skip etc so they are getting that all important Vitamin D that everyone is suddenly spouting on about. On hot days we try to limit time in the sun between 11 and 3 because we don't want them getting sunburnt or dehydrated either. Maybe if we weren't both working we would go 'out' more, but who knows. The main thing is my family seem happy and healthy.

Whitegrapeandblackberry · 24/04/2020 18:51

Thankyou for your replies just reading through them now, I've decided it's probably better for our health to go out once a day we do have a garden and are in the garden every day, I haven't got mental health issues as a poster suggested but I do worry about health and whether it's safe or not. DD is very excited that we are going out for a walk xx

FullOfCake · 24/04/2020 18:57

Yes I take my two year old and three month old out for an hours walk every single morning. We have a garden but I think they need to see the world still exists. I take antibac gel but really other than an odd twig nothing is touched and at that time we rarely see anyone at all and If we do we social distance. It's been a saviour to our mental health I think

PickAChew · 24/04/2020 19:12

Enjoy your walks while good weather lasts, OP. 🌞

ClientQ · 24/04/2020 19:13

@joystir59 I'm not going out except for my garden because I'm shielding and choosing to stick to it

thismeansnothing · 24/04/2020 19:13

Absolutely. I alternate between a run or a dog walk with DH and Dds each day. I need to get out for my own sanity.

ProfessorHasturLaVista · 24/04/2020 19:17

Enjoy your walk, Whitegrape. Don’t forget to look for rainbows in windows. There’s quite a few round here and I’ve seen young dc point to them as they walk along our street.
