Are you going out for walks during lock down?

I haven't been out for a walk in almost 4 weeks, I'm so worried about it so I have stayed in with DD 2 years old but im wondering if I'm being silly and if I should go out for a walk a day?

OP posts:
OccasionalNachos · 24/04/2020 14:22

Every day, & sometimes more than once as DS is rubbish at napping at the moment but will reliably sleep in the pram. You need fresh air and exercise!

bellabelly · 24/04/2020 14:22

I'm going for a walk in our local woods a few times a week. I always feel better for it.

Allgirlmum · 24/04/2020 14:22

No I haven't had a baby Tuesday and been shielding for weeks now absolutely far to tired to go for a walk

BakewellGin1 · 24/04/2020 14:22

Every day without fail. Youngest DS goes in his pushchair but when possible I let him out for 10 min walk. He only learnt to walk as we went into this so it's nice for him to experience it when he can.

CrazyTeaDrinker · 24/04/2020 14:26

Only 3 times since 14th March. One young adult in our house is vulnerable. I drive fortnightly to Asda for click and collect.
Luckily we have a garden to sit in and potter. Its nit huge but ok. Also have a treadmill, rowing machine and cross trainer so I get my exercise daily from that.

N4ish · 24/04/2020 14:26

Yes, out for a walk every day. Unless you're in the shielding group the exercise will be good for your physical and mental health.

PotholeParadise · 24/04/2020 14:29

Yes.

Until I hear otherwise, I am assuming this virus isn't going away. Losing fitness and becoming someone who gets breathless if they do more than walk up and down the garden sounds like a bad, bad idea.

Also, on a personal level, I also don't want my children to become anxious and generally fearful about leaving the house. I saw a post on MN that resonated with me about that, as I had a friend in my teens who developed agoraphobia during her GCSE years. So I am taking them out for walks.

To easily comply with social distancing, I'm picking places where I won't see other people, at off-peak times, and so far, it's gone well.

Alicatz66 · 24/04/2020 14:29

I do two walks every day ... I'd go nuts stuck in .. I'm recovering from surgery so it's really helping ... spurred on by my Fitbit ! Husband is the exercise police ! He runs and cycles as well ... don't think I'd sleep if I got no exercise

ofwarren · 24/04/2020 14:30

No because we are shielding but we would go out if we weren't.

CremeEggThief · 24/04/2020 14:30

Of course! Get yourselves out for some fresh air!

AgeLikeWine · 24/04/2020 14:32

Yes, I walk every day. I have walked 235km so far this month. Exercise is essential for physical & mental well-being, and the lockdown rules definitely allow us to takes exercise.

Have you not read the rules, OP, or did you not understand them? Here they are, if you need to read them again :

Alicatz66 · 24/04/2020 14:32

@Ragwort .. my dad is 89 and he walks every day too ... I'm sure that's why he's so sprightly.. he was playing bowls too until it closed ..

iVampire · 24/04/2020 14:33

No, because I’m in the shield group

CatBatCat · 24/04/2020 14:34

Yes, most days. Wander around the park at the bottom of our road in the mornings or lunchtime and a long bike ride to the edge of town at weekends. Normally we would be travelling further afield and get a train or bus to go for an explore but we've stayed local since the restrictions.

Parker231 · 24/04/2020 14:34

We’re out for a run or long walk each day and take in turns to take the dog out. She’s getting spoilt with so many walks.

Lovely in the sunshine today

MiniMum97 · 24/04/2020 14:35

Yes I stayed on for almost a week at the beginning and started to go a bit insane. We now try to get out everyday.

Bagelsandbrie · 24/04/2020 14:35

Yes everyday. I live rurally and never see anyone. It’s good to get out for some exercise.

iVampire · 24/04/2020 14:36

Exercise is essential for physical & mental well-being, and the lockdown rules definitely allow us to takes exercise

It does not however have to be carried out outdoors (as the shield group knows only too well). Fine for everyone else though. But don’t kick the arse out of it too much, because I’d love it if the govt could start easing restrictions and perhaps I’d be able to go beyond my own home occasionally

OP and those others who haven't been out - do you have an underlying health condition which would require you to be so cautious?

I have certainly been out to walk more or less daily. DH and I are both working from home so when we finish for the evening we go out for a walk before we have our meal - anywhere between 1 and 3 miles.

At the weekend we go much further. We are close to the edge of town so in a relatively short time we can be out on country roads and lanes where we see very few people. Last Sunday we walked more than 9 miles! I realise that is not a realistic proposition with a toddler but a walk in the fresh air will definitely be good for you. Especially in this nice weather.

strongcloud · 24/04/2020 14:37

Yes, we go out everyday. .

It is really bad for your daughter's health not to get out, especially given the lovely weather. Children's eyesight is adversely affected by too much time indoors (this is thought to be behind the rise in short sightedness in children) and lack of vitamin D will not be good for your daughter adn is thought to be a contributory factor to developing MS in later life.

Embracelife · 24/04/2020 14:37

If you have a garden Nd are outside every day then it s fine.
But try going for a walk for 20 minutes you will feel better for it.
If no garden then you really should get out.

Babyboomtastic · 24/04/2020 14:37

I don't that much tbh. I have a decent sized garden with lots of stuff for the kids to do, the walking available near me is a bit dull and I don't drive. I'm usually outside for a few hours a day though but I'm quite happy to have the excuse to study in tbh.

Washyourhandsyoufilthyanimal · 24/04/2020 14:37

We are not all staying in because we are all going to die from the virus we are staying in to stop the spread to protect the vulnerable and to help ease the strain on the NHS. You should be taking your daily walk for you and your 2 year old.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 24/04/2020 14:38

Yes, walk or run everyday. Sunshine, fresh air and exercise all essential to physical and mental health, I think.
