Are you going out for walks during lock down?

I haven't been out for a walk in almost 4 weeks, I'm so worried about it so I have stayed in with DD 2 years old but im wondering if I'm being silly and if I should go out for a walk a day?

OP posts:

Yes, between 2 and 4 miles a day, with a couple of 6 mile walks when I get out first thing in the morning. I would go mad without it. Already familiar with all the paths around here because we used to walk the dog until we lost her in Nov. I’d stopped going local walks because it made me too sad but when the choice to go further afield was taken away from me I got over that. Still miss her like mad as we see lots of other dog owners we knew who still have their dogs but we’re lucky to live where we do and have the choice of paths to vary it every day.
Can’t wait to be able to climb a fell again though! But I wouldn’t be able to if I don’t keep my legs in working order. Plus the health benefits of exercise can only help if/when I get Covid19.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 24/04/2020 15:12

I’m out every day (except Saturday!) at about 6.30am for a walk. I walk for about 45 mins (the length of the Woman’s Hour podcast) and at a fast pace. I take photos every day. There’s hardly anyone about and the people I do see are regulars.

I’m trying to get the kids out more but it’s hard work. Luckily we have a decent sized garden but they are looking a bit pasty!

MindyStClaire · 24/04/2020 15:13

Yes, every day. I'm pregnant and asthmatic so in the vulnerable group, but the risk is tiny and I'd lose my mind without the walk. We have a 2 year old, so we alternate days working and looking after her. She loves her walks in the morning with whoever is on duty and I love my solo walks on my working days.

Yes, my 2 year old wouldn't cope staying in everyday. He starts chanting 'River walk' pretty much as soon as he opens his eyes

Mine says "waterfall" Grin

lovelyupnorth · 24/04/2020 15:13

Daily but rarely see anyone live in the countryside so about 3-4 miles

yearinyearout · 24/04/2020 15:14

Every single day. Sometimes twice if I think the dog needs it.

EasterBuns · 24/04/2020 15:14

I am but where I am is rural and therefore quiet. Are you able to go for a walk and keep your distance from others? The risk of catching it when outside is rare but I could understand it if you are in an area with lots of people out and about but otherwise get out there and enjoy.

Amboseli · 24/04/2020 15:14

I did at first but haven't for about 2 weeks. It's not affecting my mental health at all. We've got a huge beautiful garden so I do gardening and wander around there, no need to go out of the front door at all.

Camomila · 24/04/2020 15:15

Yes, most days for an hour. We alternate going to one of two parks with scooting round the communal gardens (if there's other people in the gardens we go the park, otherwise we stay in the gardens)

Almost everyone we see is friendly and considerate (ie, they move out of the way or say thanks when we do).

newmane40593 · 24/04/2020 15:17

Yes nearly everyday we leave near farm lands so it's a nice 40 minute jog. It is really helping me.

worldweary45 · 24/04/2020 15:19

Nope

I'm not cautious I just can't be arsed

'Oh let's walk down this street, and into another street, oh here's a busy road, less busy than usual but still noisy, let's turn down another street -watch out for the dog poo!'

If I lived near a park or somewhere vaguely pretty I might do but I could walk for half an hour and still not see any green spaces

Or I could walk to the supermarket, queue up for an hour to get in, then not do a full shop because so couldn't carry it all -and therefore have to make extra shopping trips

I'm good thanks

YouAndMeAndTheDevilMakesThree · 24/04/2020 15:19

Yep pretty much every day. Our garden is quite small so if I didn't take the 2 yo out he'd destroy the house.

MulticolourMophead · 24/04/2020 15:20

I don't mind walking in a residential area. I go for walks to improve my fitness and I stick the headphones and ruminate on stuff in my head.

Scruffyoak · 24/04/2020 15:21

Absolutely. Fresh air keeps me sane. No way would my kids be content without a walk. They go mad.

otterturk · 24/04/2020 15:21

Twice a day, without fail.

oldperson1 · 24/04/2020 15:22

Dontstandsoclosetome can we get respective hubby’s together or even 2 meters apart and I’ll join you for a coffee I’ll sit on another chair 😂

papiermaches · 24/04/2020 15:23

I walk/cycle on my own AND usually take the kids out for exercise too.
Sometimes go to shop too separately.
We stay away from people, don't break the distancing rule.

Spacecudet · 24/04/2020 15:23

Going out for a walk everyday has really lifted my spirits. I try to go at different times, and take in the sights, smells and sounds. First thing in the morning and at sunset are particularly special times to be out for me. Being out and in nature is so good for MH. Try and go out OP.

ifonly4 · 24/04/2020 15:23

I'm normally active at work and walk around a lot, so I've been out every day for a cycle ride or walk.

If you're worried about going out, you can take control, perhaps go out early 8.30am when it's quiet, make the first move if you see anyone move move to the side. We're all allowed out. Exercise is good for your phsyical and mental health.

The sun is out, there's still some blossom and flowers are growing. Also, if you see anyone you can say hello or some comment, like it's a nice day. Social interaction is good and can be done distancing.

It'll do your DD good as well, you can have a laugh and skip along together, count something in particular, spot the cat etc. If you haven't got a garden take something you can play with for a few minutes in the park. Look at the flowers, plants, cats, dogs you see with her, maybe with a view to her drawing/painting something she's seen.

It's so nice out there and it gives you a mental break from this.

coldwarenigma · 24/04/2020 15:23

Daily dog walks here too. DH might end up under a new patio otherwise..Grin

RainRainGoAway2020 · 24/04/2020 15:24

I’ve not been out on many walks as I don’t enjoy walking around a housing estate and that’s my only option without driving. Plus my kids insist on touching everything they see so I just end up stressed and annoyed.
We have a good size garden so spend most days out there.

beebeedandelion · 24/04/2020 15:25

OP and those others who haven't been out - do you have an underlying health condition which would require you to be so cautious?

I don't but I work with people who are exposed to the virus frequently so I minimise the chances of exposure from anywhere other than at work.
I see it as protecting me and protecting others in case I have the virus but am asymptomatic. That said I think I have already had a mild case of it.

user1471523870 · 24/04/2020 15:26

I'd love to manage to go out every day, but realistically I do probably 3-4 times a week: 1-2 runs and 1-2 walks to my allotment.

VoyageInTheDark · 24/04/2020 15:28

I take my 2 yr old out for walks most days, either on foot over the fields at the end of the road or in her buggy round the streets. It's good to get her out of the house and she likes to look for rainbows in people's windows

Angellegna · 24/04/2020 15:28

Nope, we haven't left the house in 4.5 weeks.

edwinbear · 24/04/2020 15:28

Yes, every day to do my 10,000 steps which takes about 1.5 hrs around my local park.
