Are you going out for walks during lock down?

I haven't been out for a walk in almost 4 weeks, I'm so worried about it so I have stayed in with DD 2 years old but im wondering if I'm being silly and if I should go out for a walk a day?

We go out for a walk every day, usually 45-60 mins just round the streets.

We do plan our routes though, there is a busy road near us which if we walk 500m down it leads to more interesting places to walk in woods and fields, but it's stressful hopping backwards and forward crossing it as not everyone is sticking to social distancing so we're mostly avoiding it in favour of more boring estate pavements.

I'm more active than I've been in years and it breaks up the day.

BelfryBat · 24/04/2020 14:52

@hermanhermit yes, you're right. People who've got serious underlying conditions have been advised to stay at home.

mencken · 24/04/2020 14:55

unless you are shielding or coughing, get out once a day. Keep the kid close, do not let it toddle up to other people, be mindful of passing joggers or walkers. But everyone needs fresh air and sun on skin.

FakeFraudSquad · 24/04/2020 14:55

No. The three of us living together are being shielded and it tells you in the letter that you aren’t allowed to. We don’t even have a garden where you can keep a two metre distance as advised in the letter as it’s right on a main street and I keep seeing people hacking their guts up whilst on their daily jog/walk so it doesn’t feel safe. I’ll admit we sometimes ( 3 times since lockdown started) go out for a drive to a scenic part of town (we live in a tourist hotspot) and sit with a flask of coffee or sandwiches in the car because we’ve started to feel like we would go insane otherwise. I’m now struggling with walking though so I’ll have to find some way of exercising at home or I’ll go off my legs totally.

hangry · 24/04/2020 14:56

i hate just walking with no destination or sitting down somewhere nice. it's tedious and though i'm not particularly worried about getting the virus i really can't be bothered going out. Exercise is not mandatory.

Afternooninthepark · 24/04/2020 14:57

I go for a dog walk every day and a bike ride with the kids several times a week. I have very bad health anxiety so it’s quite a big push for me but I make myself do it. I had a slight freak out this morning when my dog slipped his lead and I had to get close to the kind lady who managed to grab him and halt his escape plan!

sugarbum · 24/04/2020 14:57

Yes. Family walk every day. The kids are 10 and 13 and wouldn't see daylight otherwise so its really important we get them out. I'm trying to get them in the garden too, but its really hard work now they're bigger. Especially the older one. Last year I could have tempted the 10 year old with the paddling pool, but he looked at me like I was mad when I suggested it this time.

DontStandSoCloseToMe · 24/04/2020 14:58

@oldperson1 😂 are you also married to my husband? It was freezing and rainy a week or so ago and he's still saying 'right let's go for our daily exercise', his usual exercise gets him no farther than the fridge and we're both still working full time.... Sometimes I just say no dear you take DS I've got things to do, then sit on the sofa and have a nice peaceful coffee 😁

Lovemusic33 · 24/04/2020 14:58

I go most mornings before it gets too busy (8am-9am), I only saw one person today.

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 24/04/2020 15:02

Not every day, we have a garden and exercise equipment at home but we go for a walk a couple of times a week. We live in a large village that's busy but have a river and open space 2 min walk away so we go there as its quiet.

Slave2love · 24/04/2020 15:02

I've only been out for a walk once in the last 5 weeks. The field and woodland near to my house which is usually quiet is now overrun with people which for me has spoiled my enjoyment of going there. I could walk round the block but that would mean I'd probably bump in to even more people. Ugh.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 24/04/2020 15:03

Yes, I run 10k every other day and walk the dogs. I would be seriously unhappy staying indoors all day every day for weeks on end.

The DC run with me, and the days they run there's a definite improvement in their behaviour and mood.

emmathedilemma · 24/04/2020 15:04

I run or walk most days. Some days I just can't be bothered trying to avoid people though! I don't know how you've stayed in with a toddler all this time unless you have a very large garden.

Crazycactuslady · 24/04/2020 15:05

Yep - a good hour every day. I'll either do a 3 mile walk in the woods or an 8/9 mile bike ride (just hit 39 wks pregnant, so I'm literally circling our little town to not be too far from home 😂). I rarely see anyone about as it's either really early or just before dark in a rural area.

hm246 · 24/04/2020 15:06

I had stayed in for 3 weeks with DS 6months. DH has made us go out for a work after he finishes work (3pm) every night this week. Can honestly say it has me in a much better head space.

spiderlight · 24/04/2020 15:06

Yes, we go out with the dog every day. We're rotating three local walks and avoiding busy times.

BearSoFair · 24/04/2020 15:06

Initially every 2 or 3 days but I go out most days now. Usually around the local park in the morning before it gets busy. Wouldn't fancy it this time of day though!

sohypnotic · 24/04/2020 15:06

We're getting out 2-3 times a week with add who is 2.5. Both working from home so some days a bit tricky. It's definitely good for mental health. We're just avoiding the busy spots, and playgrounds so DD doesn't meltdown, and going for a short walk and feed the ducks. Local nature reserve is my fave spot as it feels very different and is very quiet. Other than that I'm not going out, trying to be careful due to medical condition (not shielding) DH is shopping when needed.

Intothefuture · 24/04/2020 15:06

Yes most days but it is very busy with walkers, cyclists and runners in my area and it does put me off.

TriangleBingoBongo · 24/04/2020 15:07

My toddler would self implode! We go out quite early. 7:30 and more often than not have the park to ourselves.

1990shopefulftm · 24/04/2020 15:09

I m walking 2/3 times a week, I m pregnant and asthmatic (I don't need to shield) so it's a compromise I m happy with.

JKScot4 · 24/04/2020 15:09

Not left the house in 4 weeks with a 2 yr old?
You must have the patience of a saint!
I have 4 dogs so they are still in their exercise routine and I walk to drop shopping for elderly relative.

AnneLovesGilbert · 24/04/2020 15:09

Yes, we walk for around an hour a day. DH needs a break from work, the baby needs fresh air and I need to get outside whatever the weather. We’ve discovered loads of nice walks we didn’t know of before, it’s been great.

Rosebel · 24/04/2020 15:10

I have to force myself to go for a walk as I'm struggling and 30 weeks pregnant but I always feel better for it. I have to admit I'd have gone crazy by now if I was staring at the same 4 walls.

Fairylillie · 24/04/2020 15:10

No because the pavements in my area are heaving, both sides. It's like kicking out time at a theme park. We have been sticking to the garden.
