Weirdly the story has now disappeared from the BBC since I saw it this morning, but basically. Donald Trump is suggesting UV treatment and injecting disinfectant as a means to kill COVID.

Obviously most know he’s a lunatic, but enough support him to keep him in power, and people will take this advice seriously and will surely inevitably die as a result.

Thing is, there seems no way to stop him. if he gets back into power, which he undoubtedly will, then they have another four years of this, in which case the stability of the country is in serious danger.

But if he doesn’t get in I predict serious unrest and even wonder whether the states could end up in civil war.

Either way it’s not a place I would want to be going right now.

It’s obviously easy to laugh at trump from the sidelines, but people are having to live under this....

'To be fair, he wasn’t telling people to do this, just asking the question of the expert, who quickly rebutted it.

He's supposed to be President not some drunk in a bar making random comments.'

THIS! As the president a lot of people DO listen to him, and a lot of his supporters think he's straight-talking, sensible and knows stuff that the experts don't or are 'hiding' because of conspiracy theories.
He's dangerous.

chomalungma · 24/04/2020 09:59

Well, we did have Boris Johnson going around handshaking at the time and asking his medical experts if that was ok as he was also washing his hands.

Except it's surprising how often you touch your face.

It takes a lot for an expert to speak truth to power - especially in a public situation. I feel for the medical experts when people like Trump and Johnson behave as they do.

cardibach · 24/04/2020 09:59

I do wonder how he is going to deny that he suggested this to people?
@chomalungma he doesn’t need to deny it. His supporters do it for him. Have a look at any tweet about this - loads of replies saying he didn’t say that, he just meant is there a medication which could be injected that would kill the virus as disinfectant kills it on surfaces...self delusion. I saw a tweet this morning saying not only didn’t he say this, he also didn’t say the president had all the power. His supporters just convince themselves he didn’t say something and no amount of video evidence of him saying it makes any difference. Very scary.

Etinox · 24/04/2020 10:00

I’ll just leave this here...

To genuinely wonder what is going to happen to the US?
cardibach · 24/04/2020 10:02

We have people here with the same self deluding qualities too. For example this morning where Hancock thanking Muslims for staying home during Ramadan is reported There are people genuinely saying he didn’t say the same about Easter in their delusion that Muslims are advantages over Christians. Madness. People put videos where he clearly thanks people staying home for Easter and there’s more than one comment that he didn’t say Christians...

papiermaches · 24/04/2020 10:06

He's like the going senile, rambling old grandpa at the wedding, shouting out nonsense, being racist and embarrassing everyone. He stands up says the virus will be gone on autumn, or maybe there just be some 'embers' easy to stomp out then the Dr from the CDC goes next and literally says there WILL definitely be Covid in the autumn.

I was horrified to see Dr Faucci behind him, trying not to LAUGH!

FFS!

Why didn't he grab the mic and say "NO!!! Just NO! Don't do this, people!"

Cornettoninja · 24/04/2020 10:09

he doesn’t need to deny it. His supporters do it for him

Absolutely. It’s bonkers.

His supporters don’t seem to be concerned that their presidents speeches require the same level of interpretation as most religious texts. Apparently there’s no value in clarity.

US President Donald Trump has been lambasted by the medical community after suggesting research into whether coronavirus might be treated by injecting disinfectant into the body.

He also appeared to propose irradiating patients' bodies with UV light, an idea dismissed by a doctor at the briefing.

Another of his officials had moments earlier said sunlight and disinfectant were known to kill the infection.

Disinfectants are hazardous substances and can be poisonous if ingested.

Even external exposure can be dangerous to the skin, eyes and respiratory system.

What did President Trump say?
During Thursday's White House coronavirus task force briefing, an official presented the results of US government research that indicated coronavirus appeared to weaken more quickly when exposed to sunlight and heat.

The study also showed bleach could kill the virus in saliva or respiratory fluids within five minutes and isopropyl alcohol could kill it even more quickly.

William Bryan, acting head of the US Department of Homeland Security's Science and Technology Directorate, outlined the findings at the news conference.

While noting the research should be treated with caution, Mr Trump suggested further research in that area.

"So, supposing we hit the body with a tremendous - whether it's ultraviolet or just very powerful light," the president said, turning to Dr Deborah Birx, the White House coronavirus response co-ordinator, "and I think you said that hasn't been checked but you're going to test it.

"And then I said, supposing you brought the light inside of the body, which you can do either through the skin or in some other way. And I think you said you're going to test that too. Sounds interesting," the president continued.

"And then I see the disinfectant where it knocks it out in a minute. One minute. And is there a way we can do something like that, by injection inside or almost a cleaning?

"So it'd be interesting to check that."

Pointing to his head, Mr Trump went on: "I'm not a doctor. But I'm, like, a person that has a good you-know-what."

He turned again to Dr Birx and asked if she had ever heard of using "the heat and the light" to treat coronavirus.

"Not as a treatment," Dr Birx said. "I mean, certainly, fever is a good thing, when you have a fever it helps your body respond. But I've not seen heat or light."

"I think it's a great thing to look at," Mr Trump said.

A journalist at the briefing questioned whether Mr Trump's off-the-cuff remarks could spread dangerous disinformation to Americans.

What's the reaction been to Trump's comments?
Doctors warned the president's idea could have fatal results.

Pulmonologist Dr Vin Gupta told NBC News: "This notion of injecting or ingesting any type of cleansing product into the body is irresponsible and it's dangerous.

"It's a common method that people utilise when they want to kill themselves."

Kashif Mahmood, a doctor in Charleston, West Virginia, tweeted: "As a physician, I can't recommend injecting disinfectant into the lungs or using UV radiation inside the body to treat Covid-19.

"Don't take medical advice from Trump."

John Balmes, a pulmonologist at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, warned that even breathing fumes from bleach could cause severe health problems.

He told Bloomberg News: "Inhaling chlorine bleach would be absolutely the worst thing for the lungs. The airway and lungs are not made to be exposed to even an aerosol of disinfectant.

"Not even a low dilution of bleach or isopropyl alcohol is safe. It's a totally ridiculous concept."

Mr Trump has previously hyped a malaria medication, hydroxycloroquine, as a possible treatment for coronavirus, though he has stopped touting that drug recently.

This week a study of coronavirus patients in a US government-run hospital for military veterans found more deaths among those treated with hydroxychloroquine than those treated with standard care.

Reacting to the president's remarks on Thursday evening, Joe Biden, his likely Democratic challenger in November's White House election, tweeted: "UV light? Injecting disinfectant? Here's an idea, Mr President: more tests. Now. And protective equipment for actual medical professionals."

What's the US government's advice?
Only this week, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned Americans to be careful with cleaning products as sales of household disinfectants soar amid the pandemic.

"Calls to poison centres increased sharply at the beginning of March 2020 for exposures to both cleaners and disinfectants," found the agency's weekly morbidity and mortality report.

The US Food and Drug Administration has warned against ingesting disinfectants, citing the sale of bogus miracle cures that contain bleach and purport to treat everything from autism to Aids and hepatitis.

The agency's website says: "The FDA has received reports of consumers who have suffered from severe vomiting, severe diarrhoea, life-threatening low blood pressure caused by dehydration, and acute liver failure after drinking these products."

Last week a federal judge secured a temporary injunction against one organisation, known as the Genesis II Church of Health and Healing, for marketing a product equivalent to industrial bleach as a remedy for coronavirus.

WTF Shock Donald Trump really does need to be put out to pasture. I am totally lost for words.

He is a fucking stupid dangerous little man.

Seriously screwed in the head.

It sounds as though he is promoting Jim Humbles MMS which is bleach solution with ascorbic acid (vitimin c)

Likethebattle · 24/04/2020 10:12

He keeps saying things that are ridiculous and then an expert or an advisor has to then come along and say ‘actually no....’ ffs shut up!

This is a CNN tweet about it

The replies are interesting

@SchadenfreudePersonified Dr Faucci is being as diplomatic as he can be at the moment. He knows that if he pushes too far Trump and his team will have him out the door before he knows what’s happened and then there is nothing he can do. He’s the best asset that government have at the moment and is hugely experienced in a way that is practically impossible to replace.

Unfortunately he’s found himself in the position where the only way he can help is to swallow enough rubbish to stay in the position to actually try and get the USA through this.

I feel for the man.

lionheart · 24/04/2020 10:17

The 'Joe Biden is no better,' line is absolute nonsense.

A report from Nigeria from the last time Trump spouted on about a cure:

edition.cnn.com/2020/03/23/africa/chloroquine-trump-nigeria-intl/index.html

Or, how about those who have a legitimate need for that particular drug?

SilverDragonfly1 · 24/04/2020 10:19

We know he's a very stable genius because he told us so. This definitely confirms it.

PegLegAntoine · 24/04/2020 10:21

If he does turn out to be ill in some way he will just be even more deified by all his fans

It’s terrifying

NiteFlights · 24/04/2020 10:21

Also, Dr Fauci has been threatened for daring to seem to contradict Trump - Trump supporters really are a special type of dangerous idiot, and there are many rabble-rousers in the right wing media.

1forsorrow · 24/04/2020 10:24

I don’t think he has dementia. I think he’s a sociopath who will stop at nothing to get what he wants. Even sociopaths can get dementia.

TokyoSushi · 24/04/2020 10:28

He'll get back in. The only saving grace is that there is a limit to the time that you can serve as President in the US. The candidates for 2024 had better be good as they'll have a lot of mess to clear up.

TooTrueToBeGood · 24/04/2020 10:28

How the hell did he get elected?

Because money is massively important in the US political system. A candidate can tick every other box but if they don't have access to the obscene amounts of money required to fund an election campaign they have no chance and the greater their campaign funds the better their chances.

Celebrity. God knows why, but being famous seems to be far more important to the US electorate than many other qualities a politician might have.

Because the democrats fielded Hillary Clinton as their candidate.

Because he managed to convince millions of blue collar workers that a billionaire born into ridiculous privilege could somehow be one of them.

happinessischocolate · 24/04/2020 10:30

"Pointing to his head, Mr Trump went on: "I'm not a doctor. But I'm, like, a person that has a good you-know-what.""

I shouldn't laugh but he's bloody hilarious, then I remember the shower of shit that we have in charge in the UK

AnneOfTeenFables · 24/04/2020 10:30

Honestly, I feel this is falling into political point scoring and I'm no fan of Trump. He wasn't advising anyone should do it. He was clearly asking questions and musing rubbish.

In fact all the articles suggesting that's what he said are much more likely to reach idiots who take it seriously. I think the reporting on this has been very irresponsible.

But what's worrying about the US is that factions from both sides of the political divide are willing to have lots of people die to further their own political arguments. They really don't care at all about their population.

chomalungma · 24/04/2020 10:33

He wasn't advising anyone should do it. He was clearly asking questions and musing rubbish

What do you think it says about a President who asks questions about taking disinfectant internally at a Press Briefing on National TV?

GabsAlot · 24/04/2020 10:35

I dont care if hes got demnrtia or anything else someone should get him out of there-hes a nutter

PlanDeRaccordement · 24/04/2020 10:38

The 'Joe Biden is no better,' line is absolute nonsense.

Is it? Wow, so I suppose you think Joe Biden was a good guy when he

  1. Sabotaged Anita Hills sexual harassment case by refusing her to have any witnesses during the hearings so it was her against dozens of older men trying to prove she’d been sexually harassed.
  1. His 1994 Crime Bill resulted in the mass incarceration of mostly African Americans and created the school to prison pipeline. Look up his 1993 speech where he talks about predators roaming the streets.
  1. Plagiarist and liar. He was caught plagiarising in law school and had to drop out of the 1988 presidential race because he plagiarised again. In this race he has fabricated a war hero story where he travelled to Afghanistan to give a silver star which never happened.
  1. Claimed it was his dying sons last wish that he be president. So I suppose it’s ok to use your sons death for political cachet?
  1. Gutted welfare more than doubling child poverty in the US. Started the myth of the “welfare queen”
  1. Made racist comments about Obama E.g. “I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy.”
  1. Voted to overturn Glass-Steagall deregulation of Wall Street which resulted in their junk bond trading practices that caused the $500bn bailout to banks and the economic crash/crisis.
  1. Changed his mind on the racial integration of schools and fought against busing to keep his constituents schools “white”
