To genuinely wonder what is going to happen to the US?

Weirdly the story has now disappeared from the BBC since I saw it this morning, but basically. Donald Trump is suggesting UV treatment and injecting disinfectant as a means to kill COVID.

Obviously most know he’s a lunatic, but enough support him to keep him in power, and people will take this advice seriously and will surely inevitably die as a result.

Thing is, there seems no way to stop him. if he gets back into power, which he undoubtedly will, then they have another four years of this, in which case the stability of the country is in serious danger.

But if he doesn’t get in I predict serious unrest and even wonder whether the states could end up in civil war.

Either way it’s not a place I would want to be going right now.

It’s obviously easy to laugh at trump from the sidelines, but people are having to live under this....

The US will muddle through until Trump is replaced later this year. My second biggest worry is Bolsanaro turning the Amazon into an intensive farming operation and nobody having the balls to stop him. My first worry is the quiet stalking of Western Europe by Putin. If he decided to send his tanks into a former Soviet Union country in EE as far as I can see the world would let him.

Someone on another thread said recently that if you were his daughter or granddaughter you would be worried about him and want him to get medical help. Actually I would have disowned him decades ago for the horrible person he is and wouldn’t give a shit what happened to him.

That was me! I think he’s awful, definitely, but the human part of me feels sorry for the 0.1% of him that is still human. He must be terrified by what’s happening.

Watch his gait above - it’s not normal. Even more telling is Melania walking next to him with her arm in the flexed position - no handbag - waiting and expecting him to need her for support.

It would be more honest for his family to dismiss and disown him than pretending to support him but send him out every day to fall apart in public.

SkaraBrae · 24/04/2020 11:30

The problem is that not only is he a sociopath, he's also never faced a situation that he couldn't bully himself out of.
He has a toddler like mentality and throughout his life has been rewarded for bad behaviour.
This virus is the most unfair thing that has ever happened to him.

Also he pitches himself as the guy who fixes things- 'make America great again', 'drain the swamp' etc.

Not only is there nothing he can do about the pandemic, but he also has to (or should have to) defer to other people's expertise, and it kills him.
Notice whenever one of the scientists dismiss his ideas (as they did last night) he immediately adds a 'yes but' comment to have the last word, and to make it look like a no could still be a possibility.
It's fascinating. In a horrifying sense.

DishingOutDone · 24/04/2020 11:31

How was he elected?

Well there's a thread on here this morning saying that lock downs do more harm than good and asking us to listen to a doctor in California who knows more than the "experts and scientists". There's a link to a 50 minute you tube video. Only a few replies so far but people are going hmm interesting, maybe he has a point.

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus/3889609-These-are-the-doctors-that-need-to-be-heard

So in the USA there's a significant number of very poorly educated people who vote for Trump and then there's the "hmm interesting maybe he has a point" voters, and between them there's enough to vote him back in. If this sort of thing can even be given headspace then its easy to see how a dangerous maniac like Trump can come to power.

Marmite17 · 24/04/2020 11:34

He still has enough power eg trying to withdrawing WHO funding to need to be removed. He is obstructing efforts to halt the virus just with Tweets.
If anyone posted Free eg Essex on a tweet or Facebook page they'd be arrested here

Marmite17 · 24/04/2020 11:37

Especially if demonstration, as in the US, went ahead Trumps only response was to say They like me - they have cabin fever They are good people

PuppyMonkey · 24/04/2020 11:41

I don’t think he presents as someone with dementia. Maybe a brain tumour or something?

He reminds me a bit of Kevin the Teenager at times.

Alsohuman · 24/04/2020 11:46

I don’t think he has dementia. I think he’s a sociopath who will stop at nothing to get what he wants

They’re not mutually exclusive.

RantyAnty · 24/04/2020 11:53

I'm surprised he has lasted as long as he has at the job.

I don't think he had any idea what he was getting himself into. There's a reason every president hair quickly turns grey in office.

I agree with him having NPD and he is very thin skinned.
Very easily insulted and not able to keep his mouth shut.

I think he has such a extreme need to be liked.

My PM smirks all the time and he seems to have no empathy.
Also way over his head with the job.

I don't know why, but I believe Trump has a tiny bit of heart in there. There were several "experts" saying x amount of the population was an acceptable loss to let it run its course. Those are true psychopaths or sociopaths or whatever you want to call them.

He could have listened to them but he didn't. I was shocked at all the money he threw at this and not just for the corporations and wealthy.
making it so all the uninsured people could see the GP, quickly got telehealth nationwide. The stimulus money, extending unemployment, maxing food stamps.

He didn't have to do any of it but for some strange reason he did.

But there he is saying and tweeting stupid things daily getting people worked up and confused.

Walkaround · 24/04/2020 11:58

Narcissistic personality disorder about sums it up! The US is lucky it’s a democracy, not a dictatorship, so he only remains in power if there are enough people happy to elect him. Imagine him in charge of China.

HighNetGirth · 24/04/2020 11:59

It is really daft to say Biden is ‘no better’ than Trump. He has had a successful political career and championed valuable legislation on things like domestic violence. He is sane and well balanced and does not have a history of either racism or corruption. He did wrong by Anita Hill, admittedly, but he is a proper politician, not a malignant narcissist.

He has also described himself as a bridge candidate for a Democratic Party in transition and wants to help bring a new generation of leaders forward. He will have a female running mate.

Seriously, people.

nolongersurprised · 24/04/2020 12:05

It is really daft to say Biden is ‘no better’ than Trump.

It’s what Trump supporters say now. They can’t defend his character, policies or political nous so instead it’s a weary disingenuous, “Trump is awful but Biden is just is bad”.

JudyCoolibar · 24/04/2020 12:06

I am no can of Trump but when I read his comments it did make me think that is they could harness whatever it is in the cleaning fluids that kills Covid so quickly, it might be a good thing and it is possible he may have been meaning the same

But how? Bleach/soap etc works by denaturing the protein around the virus and killing it. Alcohol needs to be around 60% proof to work. The virus itself works by getting into the lungs and the bloodstream and replicating rapidly. To achieve, say, a 60% alcohol level into the bloodstream you'd actually have to use large quantities at close to 100% to counteract the dilution of the blood itself. That would certainly kill the patient well before the virus did. It's self-evidently impossible, and therefore anyone with the slightest level of knowledge would know that it's utterly pointless to speculate - and Trump has the best scientists in the country briefing him.

As for the notion of getting heat into the body as an alternative, again how could that possibly work? It's not a matter of drinking a lot of tea, FFS.

lljkk · 24/04/2020 12:07

DH is amazed there aren't lots of ppl Qing up to inject disinfectant into the POTUS.

BubblesBuddy · 24/04/2020 12:08

I cannot understand why the Democrats simply don't have a better candidate than someone in their 70s. What have they been doing since Obama went? I am not particlarly ageist but Trump and Reagan have shown this is not desirable when a President can serve for 8 years. The Democrats are divided and this is not a good place to be when looking for a leader to unite everyone.

Money counts in USA politics. Not talent. Having memorable 3 word slogans and promising the earth in a simple way to people who do not have much works too. The areas with the best educated Americans tend to lean more towards the Democrats but they have been failed in terms of a united party and quality candidates. I prefer Biden to Trump but "America First" will continue into the forseeable future I think.

ginghamstarfish · 24/04/2020 12:10

It would be funny if we didn't know that some deluded Trump fans might just do these ridiculous things, as per the previous incident.

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 24/04/2020 12:11

Feeliing the need to play Surf Ingestion USA by the Bleach Boys

HighNetGirth · 24/04/2020 12:12

If Bernie Sanders had not stood, Dems might have grouped around a better, younger, candidate. But he did, the party split along ‘progressive’/‘moderate’ lines, and Biden is the compromise. I think he fully gets that he is the compromise, and will lead accordingly.

chomalungma · 24/04/2020 12:13

I am not sure if putting in a substance that breaks down lipid membranes is a good thing to ingest or inject yourself with.

And having blood at 60% alcohol really isn't a good idea.

When I say, I am not sure - I really mean, don't do it.

Of course - scientists are looking at drugs which target the virus.

But I really don't think this is what Trump meant.

JudyCoolibar · 24/04/2020 12:20

I think Trump should be the first guinea pig for his revolutionary new treatment. After all, he's so clever, he couldn't possibly be mistaken, could he?

chomalungma · 24/04/2020 12:20

@vbdfamily

I am no can of Trump but when I read his comments it did make me think that is they could harness whatever it is in the cleaning fluids that kills Covid so quickly, it might be a good thing and it is possible he may have been meaning the same

Do you want to know what is in cleaning fluids and how it acts to kill viruses?

There is an interesting chat here.

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3875891-To-say-its-a-fucking-VIRUS

dreamingbohemian · 24/04/2020 12:22

Yes, I agree HighNet.

If Bernie had not run, I think all those young and progressive voters would have rallied around Warren and Castro.

The only Democrats elected president in the last 40 years were Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, very successful two-term presidents who both happened to be among the youngest presidents ever. So you would think the Dems (voters and party) would learn from that and stick with younger candidates. Oh well.

Biden very much sees himself as transitional. Everyone is very eager to see his VP pick. If he gets that right, I think he will win.

RantyAnty · 24/04/2020 12:39

There were better candidates this time but the US likes to stick with mediocre old white men.

ChocolateDove · 24/04/2020 13:03

I had to check the date when I saw this article to make sure it wasn't an April fools. Its shocking.

If the Americans vote him in again, which they may not as his supporters will probably be dead, then they are in a lot of trouble.

HighNetGirth · 24/04/2020 13:06

Maybe we could get Barry Scott to encourage Trump to self-medicate with Cilit Bang?
BANG! And the dirt is GONE!
