I'm just nosey and wonder which industries are classed as key workers other than the NHS Police Fire Brigade and Shop Staff.

I know of 3 in my family.

Armed Forces
Social Worker
Dog Unit Support

Rest of the family are working from home but aren't key workers so can't actually go out to work.

@Saltycinnamon That is maybe what is confusing me.

We had to tell the school if we worked for the NHS, Supermarket or if we were carers.

Are you in the UK? If so, you have totally misunderstood who is working at present. It is not just key workers.

Anyone can go to work if they cannot work from home.

Rest of the family are working from home but aren't key workers so can't actually go out to work.
They could go to work if they are unable to work from home, irrespective of whether they are key workers of not.

Me - civil servant (currently on maternity but would have to be in work normally)
DF - bus driver
DB - mechanic for a delivery company
Stepmum - nhs worker

The only person in my family not working is my mum as she's retired.

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 23/04/2020 00:38

I don't think I've spent Sargent correct
No, it's sergeant.

YerAWizardHarry · 23/04/2020 00:41

Partner works in the oil and gas and is still in the workshop every day.

I'm furloughed as I work as a bartender part-time, getting last minute uni assignments finished and homeschooling DS (I'm a student teacher so quite enjoy it)

Confuzzlediddled · 23/04/2020 01:11

I'm working from home, but many of my colleagues are out keeping the sewers running, my dh is also working from home in financial services, oldest dd has had to move out (was planned but had to be brought forward) as she works in a supermarket and as I am shielded it was the only way she could keep working!

Icanflyhigh · 23/04/2020 01:56

I manage a cemetery

VetOnCall · 23/04/2020 02:37

Vet in a large referral centre/emergency hospital. We're only taking emergencies and urgent referrals at the moment. I'm working about 60% hours but we're on full pay so very fortunate.

VetOnCall · 23/04/2020 02:39

I'm in Canada, not the UK, but the overall WFH/furlough situation is pretty much the same here.

caringcarer · 23/04/2020 02:55

My sister works in motorway services night shift and says they have to stay open for lorry drivers who need breaks. She only had 11 customers all night on one shift and 3 of those were nurses getting their free latte's as near to large hospital.

Musereader · 23/04/2020 03:32

Universal credit service centre. We have staff working from home who need to be shielded but they can't answer calls if they are not in the office.

My Brother works in a factory that makes bulk packaging for the pharmaceutical industry. Basically barrels that they ship the pills in.

Mum is a child minder so can work for key workers only.

Other brother and dad are both self employed handymen. Bathrooms, kitchens etc. They haven't been getting work apart from odd jobs where they can socially distance.

grisen · 23/04/2020 03:51

Night manager at a hotel, we are empty.

foofooyeah · 23/04/2020 03:55

DP is an Engineer at huge Datacentre, he has to go in.
I work in IT too but can work from home.

ChilliMayo · 23/04/2020 03:58

Night shift at a supported living setting for adults with learning disabilities.
Reassurance after nasty dreams, monitoring our guys with epilepsy, cups of tea for our non sleepers and at the moment lots and lots of deep cleaning. We have none of the nasty stuff here and aim to keep it that way!
My guys haven't seen their families since early in March ☹️

1066vegan · 23/04/2020 05:47

I think it is the school issue that has made it confusing.

Schools are only open for vulnerable children and for key workers. People have been told only to go to work if they can't work from home.

There must be a lot of people who can't work from home because of the nature of their work, can't send their children to school and therefore can't work at all because of lack of childcare.

I think the messages about public transport only being for key workers has re-enforced the confusion.

FairyDogMother11 · 23/04/2020 05:53

DH works in food production and he's busier than ever.
