I'm just nosey and wonder which industries are classed as key workers other than the NHS Police Fire Brigade and Shop Staff.

I know of 3 in my family.

Armed Forces
Social Worker
Dog Unit Support

Rest of the family are working from home but aren't key workers so can't actually go out to work.

Why do people think this is the case? At no time have we been told we can't go to work.

bez91 · 23/04/2020 06:34

The guidance has been shambolic from the government in that everyone has interpreted it in a different way.

I work in social housing doing a multitude of property a H&S related things, 3/4 weeks ago we were told to make housing available for the homeless. A straight forward task getting the refurbs done IF you can get hold of materials... the amount industries are linked together isn't full appreciated!

I’m a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Occupational/Public Health who works in the private sector. I work for two businesses - 1. A key food producer, and 2. A glass packing producer; both still running albeit on reduced staff due to absence, and furlough where we might’ve paused contracts.

Mostly working from home on a 24 hour on call basis but going to the sites as and when required usually to advise on implementation of government advice or deliver legally mandated health surveillance programmes in some form or another. I’ve been at max capacity since mid-late January when it started to become a possible global concern.

Warehouse worker. Busier than Christmas

Eminybob · 23/04/2020 07:02

DH works in a building society branch which is still open for essential transactions only on reduced opening hours.
As someone said upthread it’s ridiculous how many people expect it to be business as usual and kick off when they’re not allowed in to have their bloody passbooks updatedHmm

HR in a local authority. Mostly wfh but need to go into the office every now and then.

Financial adviser - only restriction is not meeting clients face to face.

Soconfusedandlost · 23/04/2020 07:15

Run a community centre. Since coronavirus, we're the local base for volunteers to pick up shopping and prescriptions and we provide hot meals three times a week to the vulnerable. So our cook, cleaner and caretaker are still working as well

@sunseed as a financial advisor - who cannot meet clients face to face, why do you have to leave home to work?

LakieLady · 23/04/2020 07:55

I'm a benefit adviser, but because all our clients are vulnerable, we're regarded as key workers.

We're all WFH though and not doing any F2F appointments. And we're giving advice to staff, many of whom are claiming benefits for the first time because partners are out of work.

DP works for one of the emergency services, and all the non-uniformed staff are treated as key workers.

my husband works for a company that produces pop..(the one with the christmas train!) and he is still working. I am a furlonged at home with my daughter as I do school catering and they only needed part of our team to help.

Interesting thread and it's v interesting how the "rules" are being interpreted. I work for health and social care and am working from a different hospital base just now. Some of my colleagues are working from home. We need a face to face meeting with one of them, it has been very difficult to persuade them to actually come in. Drives me bonkers.

LakieLady · 23/04/2020 08:11

@thismeansnothing I bet your poor mum IS busy!

I spoke to a client yesterday who has been on UC for over 3 months. She took her tenancy etc in about 3 weeks into her claim and hasn't had any money for her rent yet. Her landlord is hassling her and threatening to evict her and it's affecting her MH badly.

I rang him and explained how busy they are, pointed out that he couldn't start eviction proceedings atm and promised him that I would help her make arrangements so that the money will go direct to him as soon they've processed it.

Ironically, I switched to this job 18 months ago because I burned out after working in homeless prevention for 12 years. It was weird to find myself doing it again.

Sunseed · 23/04/2020 08:53

@MogeatDog because I am still providing an ongoing service to my existing clients. While I can (and do) do as much as I can from home, not everything is automated and I frequently need to refer to files held in the office, which would not be secure if removed from there. Postal correspondence also needs dealing with in a timely manner.

louise5754 · 23/04/2020 08:53

@userxx I've said I was wrong

OP posts:
userxx · 23/04/2020 08:59

@louise5754 It wasn't a dig. Many people thought that was the case, I'm not sure where the information came from, I saw something along those lines in the sun newspaper 😬. So many businesses did not need to close down, the government were not expecting it.

userxx · 23/04/2020 09:03

@Sunseed Let's also not forget the GDPR rules! Damned if you do, damned if you don't. There's not a chance I'd have room to store all the files I need on a daily basis, much easier to continue going into the office.

louise5754 · 23/04/2020 09:06

@userxx 👍🏻
