I'm just nosey and wonder which industries are classed as key workers other than the NHS Police Fire Brigade and Shop Staff.

I know of 3 in my family.

Armed Forces
Social Worker
Dog Unit Support

Rest of the family are working from home but aren't key workers so can't actually go out to work.

Cleaner at the town hall, which is still open to the public

I’m a nurse. DH is a Payroll Manager & is busier than me! He’s worked 7 12 hour days this week trying to sort out those who are furloughed, those who aren’t but are having to take a pay cut & those who want to opt out of the pension scheme.

Apparently his company’s IT system is dated so all of this takes much time!

My family are all working from home except my brother (army - on standby at home), and mum (agency nurse - got loads of work as all the usual nurses are off looking after their children who are off school).

There are also key workers working at home. some areas of banking and finance are essential services especially people working in bereavements in insurance for example and compliance support staff to make sure that customers are getting fair treatment. People still need access to their money.

Ginxed · 22/04/2020 23:23

School bursar, the school finances still need managing even though there aren’t many children in school.

bridgetreilly · 22/04/2020 23:26

Not a key worker. Mostly working from home, occasionally going into the office to do the things I can't do at home, as per the guidelines.

Most people are still working, aren't they? It's only the non-essential, non-online retail sector and similar public-facing jobs that aren't, afaik.

Devlesko · 22/04/2020 23:29

louise, you aren't thick, it's just nothing you've had to think about before. Thanks I'm a bit like it myself.

bridgetreilly · 22/04/2020 23:30

And honestly, I think the government guidelines on this have been perfectly clear throughout. It's the media which has picked up on the idea of keyworkers and confused everyone completely.

Lessofallthisunpleasantness · 22/04/2020 23:32

Warehouse, logistics business, not essential but very indirectly health care. Still open. Can't be done from home .... unless you got a massive warehouse and forklifts in your back garden.

Most office staff working from home though.

I'm a part-time supermarket cashier. We have brilliant managers at every level, a wonderful team, lovely customers, and I am so very proud to be doing something really useful.

Saltycinnamon · 22/04/2020 23:58

I think a lot of the confusion has come from the pressure schools put on parents to keep kids at home. We were told that if anyone could stay at home, unless they were a key worker, they should and we couldn’t have a place at the school. Lots of my colleagues (teachers!) were told the same.
