If you are still going out to work what do you do?

I'm just nosey and wonder which industries are classed as key workers other than the NHS Police Fire Brigade and Shop Staff.

I know of 3 in my family.

Armed Forces
Social Worker
Dog Unit Support

Rest of the family are working from home but aren't key workers so can't actually go out to work.

I work in a supermarket so you "dear people" can get your "essentials" such as booze, sun loungers and f-ing booze.

You may not notice but I'm biting my tongue.

FanfictionFan · 23/04/2020 23:12

I meant to write booze, sun loungers and bbqs, also the amount of TV's being sold is ridiculous.

@fanfictionfan perhaps blame your company bosses for that. So long as these items are available in store to purchase, people will continue to do so. Not that I have bought any of those items with the exception of alcohol.

drspouse · 23/04/2020 23:25

The people that work in the sun lounger and BBQ factories are probably quite grateful.

MrsMadEye · 23/04/2020 23:31

I'm a furloughed non essential retail assistant but DH and DS still work night shifts in a food factory.

FanfictionFan · 23/04/2020 23:32

Personally I go into work and smile politely at all of your "essential" purchases, it amuses me when I see the customers with their grotty gloves and masks. I do my job with a smile and wish customers a pleasant day no matter how much of a fuckwit the customer is.

Lovely13 · 23/04/2020 23:46

Think this a brilliant question. B&Q are now reopening some stores. Why were they less essential? One person’s need to repaint may save her/his sanity. Yet an off licence is ok! And yes I do need that glass of wine.

RabidChinchilla · 23/04/2020 23:49

I run a salon.

FanfictionFan · 23/04/2020 23:58

I had a customer tell me in one breath how her sister was coming to visit her and was bringing the wine, while she supplied the brandy and in the next, complain about the number of people dying from the Coronavirus . She didn't pick up on my suggestion that people shouldn't leave their homes unless it was absolutely necessary.

cookiemon666 · 24/04/2020 00:26

NHS nurse

onaroll · 24/04/2020 00:34

Animal charity worker. Still working - lots of mouths to feed and pens to clean everyday.

nannykatherine · 24/04/2020 00:44

I am a Nanny and i work for a Doctor ..
lots of nanny’s are still working either because they work fir essential workers
or
because the family will not furlough them .

some nanny’s would prefer not to work because they do not feel safe but the families have said they will not pay them or furlough them if they don’t work or they lose their job . the parents are working from home and are not essential .
some nannies have died after contracting Covid .
one of these nannies died today , she was 26 years old .

Fuzzyspringroll · 24/04/2020 05:52

Teacher.
I'm going back from next week. I'm abroad. Our schools are starting to open and some of the kids need teaching in school while we still try and teach the others online.

Warsawa31 · 24/04/2020 07:34

Linesman for a power company - a risky thankless job. Power lines can be fixed from home in afraid

yearinyearout · 24/04/2020 07:41

@FanfictionFan supermarkets are open, it makes no difference to you whatsoever what people choose to put in their trolley. Do you roll your eyes at people buying cake?

mostlydrinkstea · 24/04/2020 07:41

Priest so I'm going out for funerals.

Th rest of the time I'm supporting the congregation by phone and letter and working out how to do church online with just a phone and no tech backup.

Fowles94 · 24/04/2020 08:31

@maddy68 our schools are not keeping the children 2 metres apart, I didn't even know they had too.

drspouse · 24/04/2020 08:43

@mostlydrinkstea we are stuffing envelopes for our vicar, luckily a small congregation so we only have 12 not online!

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 24/04/2020 08:45

Same here. It’s just not possible. I had to give first aid for a grazed leg a couple of days ago. Simply no way to observe social distancing in school.

ItsCharging · 24/04/2020 09:19

I’m a Store Manager for a well known catalogue retailer (I’m sure you can all guess who!), where it’s been decided 2/3rds of the company are allowed to close to customers but the rest stay open! I’m actually taking more money now than I did at Christmas!

drspouse · 24/04/2020 09:26

@BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou my DS PRU (primary) thinks they can observe social distancing but it's all very vague and seems to mean "don't breathe on each other". DD mainstream primary isn't even trying.

Sceptre86 · 24/04/2020 09:29

Pharmacist. Things have been manic with people over ordering medicines and Gps issuing prescriptions not due for three months. Finally seems to be getting back to a normal workload.
