AIBU to hate this? You're not BOTH pregnant, only one of you is!

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll
But men don’t put their arm around a pause and proudly say “we’re pregnant “ do they?
So obviously I was talking about the context of a relationship, as outlined in the original post.😆

evianbottletops · 22/04/2020 18:30

YANBU. Makes me angry tbh. Did my dh have life long consequences for being pregnant. No?! So how was he ever 'pregnant'

1forAll74 · 22/04/2020 18:33

It's probably what Meghan the American said before the birth, so be glad that we missed the announcement.

PanamaPattie · 22/04/2020 18:34

No DH, “we” are not pregnant, I’m pregnant and you’re the sperm donor.

bridgetreilly · 22/04/2020 18:35

It's probably what Meghan the American said before the birth, so be glad that we missed the announcement.

Oh, grow up.

SarahAndQuack · 22/04/2020 18:44

Yeah, I hate 'we're pregnant'.

We're a same-sex couple and I found it particularly strange when we did NCT, and one of the men introduced himself with loads of 'when we found out we were pregnant ... when we were four months pregnant' etc etc. I kept thinking how weird and confusing it'd be if I'd done that too, sitting there all un-bumped claiming 'we' were pregnant.

Only men. And only some very strange men.

mumwon · 22/04/2020 18:45

I use to hate doctors who asked "how are we today" or - paediatrician "well mother how is little won" first, I am a individual & I don't know how you feel second I am not your mother (especially as you are older than me - well she was than Grin)

user68901 · 22/04/2020 18:47

agree

Stellamboscha · 22/04/2020 18:52

Agree -seems to be an(other) cringey American thing

heidipi · 22/04/2020 18:57

How about "we're breastfeeding"?

Said to me once at an evening work event, competitively, by a bloke who had a baby about the same age as mine. He was swigging wine and smoking a fag and wasn't even in the same town as his baby at the time, none of which are ideal when BF. He hit a nerve but was a tosser nonetheless.

Kay1341 · 22/04/2020 18:58

I suspect men say 'we' to somehow address their feeling of powerlessness during pregnancy and birth. They feel useless, so they try and convince themselves they had an active part to play beyond stroking their wife's hair and reassuring her (which in itself is quite interesting how generally the only way men can be supportive during childbirth means they have to engage in what are often seen as stereotypically feminine behaviours).

AravisTarkheena · 22/04/2020 18:59

It’s more cringe to see people get so annoyed about what others say when there’s no harm in it

I agree with this tbh. I understand the annoyance if a man is pontificating using ‘we’ which does come off patronising or controlling, but if a woman says it I don’t bat an eyelid.

Pinkblueberry · 22/04/2020 19:00

How about "we're breastfeeding"?

That just conjures up images of Robert DiNero in Meet The Fockers with the fake breastfeeding boob Grin

Uhohmummy · 22/04/2020 19:01

YANBU. It’s awful. My DH has on numerous occasions told me that a male friend (singular) is pregnant - for example “Robbie is pregnant”. What?!? That’s physically impossible. His partner is pregnant, they are having a baby.

happymummy12345 · 22/04/2020 19:09

I hate it. No need to say it at all. We are having a baby, fine because both will have a baby when the time comes. But both will never be pregnant, only one is actually pregnant

OneandTwenty · 22/04/2020 19:10

YABU

I don't care, and it's a nice change from all the women complaining about useless, uninterested or absent fathers.

TheHumanSatsuma · 22/04/2020 19:11

I am not alone!

We have hideous piles, we can’t keep any food down and have lost 2 stone in 10 weeks, no WE are not pregnant. We may be expecting a baby, but pregnancy is entirely female.

SauvignonBlanche · 22/04/2020 19:13

Nauseating!

TheNewSchmoo · 22/04/2020 19:13

How mean spirited

SarahAndQuack · 22/04/2020 19:15

I don't care, and it's a nice change from all the women complaining about useless, uninterested or absent fathers.

It's not a change, though.

The men who say 'we're pregnant' are, IME, invariably the ones who do fuck all when the baby comes. It's not surprising really ... they started out by presuming pregnancy was a totally imaginary state rather than hard physical work their partner was doing (on her own).

OoohTheStatsDontLie · 22/04/2020 19:20

I can't get too wound up about this to be honest. Yes it's not technically correct and a bit irritating but if a father really wants to be involved then I think that's better than one who is disinterested, for example those that expect the woman to fund maternity leave completely on her own because it's her body/ baby / bonding time etc. I think someone who sees it as a joint thing even though they arent going through it themselves is ok

TheWordmeister · 22/04/2020 19:21

I would totally judge a man that said 'we are pregnant'.

As - a. a complete wanker and b. someone who wants the attention

PutThemInTheIronMaiden · 22/04/2020 19:26

Actually "It's cringe" or "So cringe" is even worse.

It's "cringeworthy".

amazedmummy · 22/04/2020 19:28

DH said to me (as a joke) that we were pregnant. I was about 37 weeks pregnant and housebound from terrible PGP. He never did it again.

Dahlietta · 22/04/2020 19:29

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll Fortunately I hadn’t had my own children by that point or I might have done!! 😂
