DD says she needs a chairdrobe because it's gross to put worn clothes in the wardrobe

or into drawers. And I reply if they are clean enough to be worn again they should go in the wardrobe.

I might not practise what I preach but I am right. Aren't I?

I have a wooden chair and DH has a rather nice wooden IKEA valet stand, now discontinued.

Our kids always had a crate each to pop in those slouchy after school clothes that only get worn for a few hours.

DC4 has about 5 changes of clothes a day, so his crate can get a bit stupid (paper round clothes, school uniform, comfy after school clothes, running/football training clothes, PJs)

Carouselfish · 19/04/2020 15:29

Got an ottoman for my 'medium pile'. Agree with your dd.

Leflic · 19/04/2020 15:33

Agree with DD,

There’s levels on clean too. I wear gardening clothes a couple of days running because I don’t need spanking clean clothes getting grubby.

TheMagiciansMewTwo · 19/04/2020 15:36

But if you put once worn clothes into the wardrobe how do you keep track of what's clean and what's been worn?
Your DD is right ... or would be if she had an ottoman to put her clothes on because I also completely agree with you that bedroom chairs are for reading Austen. Bureaus in the morning room are for writing sonnets. Wink

Purpleartichoke · 19/04/2020 15:36

I agree with her. Worn clothes should not be put back with fully laundered clothing.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 19/04/2020 15:38

I agree with your daughter, OP. I don't have a chair-drobe, used to have an exercise-bike-hanger though but now that's moved into the utility room.

I now just hang up clothes on the door if they're going to be re-worn. On hangers though! Proper, nice satin ones! Grin

Abreadsandwich · 19/04/2020 15:45

I put once-worn stuff on a hanger on the back of the door. I wouldn't dream of putting it back in the wardrobe because I once worked for a woman who did this and the stink of rancid clothes from her wardrobe was revolting

Can I ask how you knew that the rancid smell was definitely because she'd worn a jumper or skirt twice rather than maybe didnt have great personal hygiene?

HappyPunky · 19/04/2020 15:50

I've had one on my amazon wish list for ages because I drape them over something else.
Have a look for Valet Chair - haven't read the whole thread sorry if someone else has already said.

MerryDeath · 19/04/2020 15:51

YABU/. it would be absolutely abhorrent to put half worn with clean ShockConfused

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 19/04/2020 16:05

DH and I used to have a chairdrobe but I didn't like seeing the clothes draped over it so we compromised and bought a small shelving unit (5 shelves) that we share. DH puts his phone, etc. on the top, the other shelves are divided between us for worn clothes. Anything that needs a hanger goes on the peg on the bedroom door.

Definitely looks better than a chairdrobe. Smile

stickerqueen · 19/04/2020 16:09

@BeFire my dd has a rockinghorsedrobe too hers is pink

HyacynthBucket · 19/04/2020 16:09

I never put clothes away that have been worn because they make wardrobes smell musty and attract clothes moths if there for any length of time. If you have the room, a hanging rail is an alternative to a chairobe for clothes being worn again, or maybe a hatstand that can take hangers would take less space.

mogtheexcellent · 19/04/2020 16:14

I have an instanhanger which is less intrusive. But most of my stuff can be folded and popped on the chair. My floor is for dirty need to be washed clothes Blush

Topseyt · 19/04/2020 16:18

I am with your DD. Surely only freshly laundered clothing should be put away in the wardrobe or chest of drawers!

I am liking the expression "chairdrobe" though. Unfortunately my DD3 keeps a floordrobe instead!

Sereyus · 19/04/2020 16:35

Why doesn't she put them in the wash?Confused

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 19/04/2020 16:36

My DD and DS also have floordrobes. What annoys me is when they hunt through their baskets of clean laundry looking for an item and let the clean clothes mix in with the worn on the floor. Angry

It would be easier to put the clean ones away, but apparently, that's too much effort for healthy young people. Grin

TillyFloss10 · 19/04/2020 16:40

I often wear my clothes more than once and usually hang them back up. If the clothes are so gross that they will 'contaminate' other items and smell then they shouldn't be going in a wardrobe or even on a chair, put them staright in the wash!

SmallChickBilly · 19/04/2020 17:03

Anyone who polices what one person does in their private space when it has no direct impact on them is BU IMO.

This judgement has no bearing on the fact that my parents gave me the room with the airing cupboard in it, then complained that they had to 'traipse' (NEVER just walk!) through my 'hovel' to put towels in it, and therefore my room was commented on repeatedly for years! It is a perfectly legimitately formed opinion based on scientific evidence and my arsey teenage inner self who can apparently hold a grudge for decades!

winterisstillcoming · 19/04/2020 17:07

They actually exist! On wayfair.

vixxo · 19/04/2020 17:07

Agree with your daughter, it's best to separate clean and worn clothing, especially if you have cashmere/woollen/silk garments. She can get an 'open' wardrobe which is basically a rack, instead of a chairdrobe.

TheFredericaQuartet · 19/04/2020 18:15

Why doesn't she put them in the wash?

Because they don't need washing.

Nearlythere1 · 19/04/2020 20:00

I wear lots of oversize stuff that doesnt need washed every day, and let me tell you, i couldnt live without my chairdrobe.

DysonFury · 19/04/2020 20:09

YABVU OP. Can't beat a floor/chair/dressing tabledrobe

WeAllHaveWings · 19/04/2020 23:06

These are brilliant, take up less room.

Lanurk · 19/04/2020 23:30

I used to have an extensive floordrobe growing up (and right the way til I met dp but shh don’t tell him 🤫) so I allow a chairdrobe but she goes too far and has 3 or 4 outfits on it at a time and sometimes her school uniform too which drives me crazy!
