Some words just really make me shudder. Also, 'meal' and 'helping' as in 'another helping of broccoli'. Noooo

OP posts:
starlightgazers · 18/04/2020 23:29

As in - the WORD makes me shudder - could've phrased that better!

UnderTheIroningBoard · 18/04/2020 23:30

Some more:
"I gotta go a toilet" sets my teeth on edge
"Undercrackers" for underwear
"Hows you?" for "How are you?

Anoisagusaris · 18/04/2020 23:30

Yes yes yes to Babywearing

Lockheart · 18/04/2020 23:30

Any diminutive of perfectly fine words.

Sweeties, choccy, veggies, pop (for a drink), tinned "toms", pud, din-dins, hubby, kiddies, bubs, bubba etc.

Also anyone who says "I have a tiny baby" - of course your baby is fucking tiny, it's a baby, they're ALL tiny.

UnderTheIroningBoard · 18/04/2020 23:31

"Intercourse" is akin to words like "Fellatio" or "cunnilingus"- i.e nobody actually uses them in real life, surely?

Sux2buthen · 18/04/2020 23:32

Ooh, when people say 'negosiate or appresiate' instead of negotiate and appreciate. Blargh

longwayoff · 18/04/2020 23:36

Bronte. Not Austen.

Anoisagusaris · 18/04/2020 23:36

‘When.....’

As in when used on social media etc as the start of a caption of a photo eg ‘when you don’t write a full sentence’ followed by a picture of a try hard gobshite 😆

Seriously, when what???

Rubyroses3 · 18/04/2020 23:37

I hate it when people say 'Makes for comfortable viewing'.

Andpiglettoo · 18/04/2020 23:39

Supper - used as an affectation

Let’s do supper? Aargh

Like - used as a filer in every sentence often repeatedly ‘it was like’

As previous poster ‘my bad’

Cutlery - only because I cannot pronounce it and the more I think about it the more confused I become.

Flixsfoilball · 18/04/2020 23:40

Spends, I fucking hate it! what is wrong with spending money?

OddshoesOddsocks · 18/04/2020 23:41

Oh another!! DP says ‘lolly ice’ Instead of ‘ice lolly’. He’s determined that he’s right (and he would be if we lived where he originates but we do not and therefore he isn’t!) and is determined to pass this abomination on to the children! Not on my watch!!

Stillfunny · 18/04/2020 23:43

Certain magazines seem to regularly have stories where a woman meets a " bloke with a cheeky grin " who takes her for a " slap up meal with all the trimmings ". Ugh
Or the other publication that refers to some Z lister "setting pulses racing" in her togs.

Miriel · 18/04/2020 23:43

When describing or giving suggestions for an outfit - wear with 'a black shoe' or 'a red lip'. Just the one?

Lockheart · 18/04/2020 23:43

Also when people say "borrow" when they mean "lend".

No, you didn't "borrow your friend some money", you loaned your friend some money.

Borrow = someone gives you something.
Lend = you give someone else something.

EllaAlright · 18/04/2020 23:45

Pack up instead of packed lunch.

nolongersurprised · 18/04/2020 23:47

On the food theme I really dislike the phrases "all the trimmings"

I hate trimmings with a passion.

“Sourced” instead of just “bought”.

ConnieBowskill · 18/04/2020 23:48

Hate the fashion for starting a sentence with So. As in " What do you do for a living?" "So, I'm a student/nurse/ teacher"!

Also, abbreviating illnesses or medical conditions e.g. Endo, Fibro etc. Grrr!

totallydevoidofideas · 18/04/2020 23:49

Muggins.

xsarax · 18/04/2020 23:51

Plate up , omg it gives me the absolute rage Angry
As in , “ I’ll just plate up the meat “ or “ the meal is ready it just needs plating up “
Also agree with PP who said about “when you...” regarding a post or picture on social media , I hate it !

EngagedAgain · 18/04/2020 23:51

Connie - yes, often get people doing this on quiz shows.

ConnieBowskill · 18/04/2020 23:52

Agree about quiz shows (Pointless, looking at you!)

Wolfgirrl · 18/04/2020 23:53

The words 'engorged' or 'feed'. Reminds me of tics.

The word petite, meaning short. Just say short! Tall people are fine with being tall, they dont need a French word to glamourise it Hmm

The word 'support'. It is massively overused when there are so many other words. It makes me think of some fragile fainting waif, when it usually relates to something really banal like not wanting to go alone to a GP appointment or something.

'Support system' makes me think of scaffolding.

'Community', always pronounced without the 't' for some reason.

'Exhausted' as my sister always uses it, when really shes just a bit tired.

Brexit being pronounced 'Bregsit'.

The word 'survivor' being used in relation to a non-life threatening event.

NewAccountForCorona · 18/04/2020 23:55

sat

No-one is ever sat on something. They sat last week, or they are sitting now, or they will sit tomorrow.

They are never sat. Nor were they ever sat. Not ever.

MargotMoon · 18/04/2020 23:57

I've got a thing about the phrase "glass of bubbly". Particularly used by a spa whose mailing list I am on: "price includes glass of bubbly on arrival".

It's cheap and it's fizzy, your twee description does not make it in any way glamorous.
