'Foodstuffs' and other words too awful to mention.

Some words just really make me shudder. Also, 'meal' and 'helping' as in 'another helping of broccoli'. Noooo

Oh oh 'dish'. 'That's a really tasty dish'

I get the dislike of twee words like “lashings”/“nom nom“ etc. I can kind of understand disliking “foodstuff” (is it because it makes food sound like a non-food object?). “Helping” I’m guessing is seen as a bit common. But what on earth is the issue with the word “meal”?? What word do you use instead of it? Genuinely confused...

Toothsil · 18/04/2020 21:18

I can't stand the word "meal", I don't know what it is about it but I just don't like it at all. My mum always asks "have you had your meal?" if she phones in the evening. It's not something I could ask!

rabbitsnose · 18/04/2020 21:19

'Meal' is so divisive!

It's too long and drawn out meeeealllll

@rabbitsnose at least that makes sense!

Hotcuppatea · 18/04/2020 21:20

Eateries. 😠

Hohofortherobbers · 18/04/2020 21:20

I hate the word 'feedback', if someone asks me for feedback it makes me think of those mother birds regurgitating food to their young Envy not envy

HandfulOfFlowers · 18/04/2020 21:23

I hate "cheeky" when used to refer to food and drink, as in "cheeky pint" or "cheeky cupcake".

Sux2buthen · 18/04/2020 21:23

That's strange, the word 'meal' makes me grit my teeth too.

This one isn't so much the word but when it's used this way:
'Reader, I shit the bed'
'Reader, it was a coffee bean'

Whoever is reading knows they are reading, it's not a conversation

RedRed9 · 18/04/2020 21:23

When would you use ‘meal’ in every day life?

“Let’s go out for a meal together sometime.”
^ I guess you’d say dinner/lunch?

How do you feel about ‘meal planning’? As in writing down dinners/lunches for the week ahead of time.

And ‘meal prep’?

rabbitsnose · 18/04/2020 21:23

Yes I don't like reader in that context either

rabbitsnose · 18/04/2020 21:25

No one ever says 'let's have a meal', do they? Everyone says, 'are you free for lunch/dinner?'

Meal prep is strangely fine.

Can't abide 'prepped' or 'let's'.

aupresdemonarbre · 18/04/2020 21:25

Yeah reader is another one that’s a bit twee (apart from in the original Austen of course!) but I’m still not understanding meal. It’s not pronounced in a drawn out way?

Bristolbitsandbobs · 18/04/2020 21:27

Gotten.

rabbitsnose · 18/04/2020 21:27

When people say “I’m just POPPING/NIPPING somewhere” not sure why but it infuriates me

Laquila · 18/04/2020 21:28

I can't stand the use of "fabulous" in relation to food, or even worse, "to die for" 🙄😱

TheAdhesiveDuckDeficiency · 18/04/2020 21:29

Popping. As in ‘I was just popping to the shop’. It makes me irrationally angry.

This on peas:

Tasters unanimously favored the smaller peas for their sweeter flavor and creamier texture. Regular peas were by no means unacceptable but had tougher skins and mealier interiors.

Mealier
