Some words just really make me shudder. Also, 'meal' and 'helping' as in 'another helping of broccoli'. Noooo

OP posts:
MaryBoBary · 19/04/2020 08:02

A yes and similarly to pp saying a red lip; a stonewashed Jean and a sport pump.

Mooserp · 19/04/2020 08:03

Agree with belly

Also, often in writing - a pregnant woman described as having a 'swollen belly' 😩

GottenGottenGotten · 19/04/2020 08:08

Gotten - we are not in America

So?

It is widely used in the UK and has been all my life and probably long before. And I'm not young.

Gotten is not an Americanisation. And I will continue to use it. Grin

TwistyHair · 19/04/2020 08:17

Gifted! Just a wanky way of saying given or gave. Like the person gifting something is oh so special.

Calling women mama. Hate it.

Odds and sods. Awful phrase.

Covert19 · 19/04/2020 08:27

Space instead of room. Eg, “This is a great space”. It’s the kitchen.

DH has started to say “optics” instead of how it looks - “If we’re going to make redundancies we need to consider the optics of that.” I have told him to stop.

englebertsausagedog · 19/04/2020 08:27

Belly is an awful word.
As is gusset.

As pp have said, "plate" as in 'a lovely plate of food"
And "space" as in "you done something really interesting with this space"

Tasty. My MIL says this about every. Single. Meal (sorry op!) even when we've been out for dinner and it's not been very good, as soon as she's tried it: "ooooh that's really tasty!"
I didn't even notice until dh pointed it out.

I also can't stand "monies" I'm sure it's grammatically correct in some instances but it just seems so over the top. Just use the word money.

TaxFool · 19/04/2020 08:30

Unnecessary use of descriptive words gives me "lashings" of rage. When people are describing what they had for dinner or offering meal ideas:

"Tonight we're having Mexican chilli served with crusty bread and a crisp, green salad." Fuck off.

Anything twee or quaint, tends to make me angry.

TaxFool · 19/04/2020 08:33

Oh and sliver Angry. A "sliver" of cake...

sleepingpup · 19/04/2020 08:40

I say loads of these 😂 Currently wearing a grey slipper.

but HATE

Mama ( said in the UK, i'll let Americans off )

Did instead of visited
We 'did' Madrid
We 'did' Greece
We 'did' Paris

'looking to' as in
Looking to buy a house
Grrrrr.........

holibobs. Hmm

making memories ( cut my throat first )

On here and I never ever here them out in real life
naice. and the ultimate boak ( boak )

derxa · 19/04/2020 08:46

Anything Greg Wallace says.

ChippyMinton · 19/04/2020 09:00

Hot choc
Movie night
Snuggled
PJs

Any abbreviation.
Any singular that should be plural - eg wide-legged pant

Member869894 · 19/04/2020 09:05

Shooter.

user278654 · 19/04/2020 09:08

The very over use of the word "like" that teenagers appear to put in every mouthful. The use of workplace that started in the 80's why not say at work.

Stronger76 · 19/04/2020 09:08

Cat needs fed
Lounge needs decorated
No the lounge needs TO BE decorated. Or the lounge needs decorating Homes under the Hammer I'm looking at you Mum the cat needs TO BE fed etc.

This gives me the absolute rage!

Also hubster, famalam, boobing.

I hate the phrase 'parents or carers'. Maybe because of the plurality of parents, maybe because some of the kids I've worked with hate the phrase carers to refer to the folk who provide them with little more than a roof over their heads.

Mammatino · 19/04/2020 09:12

Sexy time. Someone called it bam bam on a recent thread. Also my username may start with a mamma but believe me if someone uttered this in real life I would force their head in a kettle and switch it on. Oh and suck it up, I don’t like this one. Any kind of disgusting noise to show enjoyment of food. Scrummy. Very close to scummy.

Nogoodusername · 19/04/2020 09:18

Picky bits
Gifted

Carbosug · 19/04/2020 09:22

'picky tea' I've never it in real life but it seems to be rife on MN at Christmas time. Awful expression.
I also hate cheesey pasta. It sounds so twee when an adult says it.

midnightstar66 · 19/04/2020 09:30

Juice is a really strange and irritating word

Covert19 · 19/04/2020 09:31

A “pop” of colour.

“Team” to mean “wear with”

“Beige slacks”

I teamed the camel top with the beige slacks and added a red bangle for a pop of colour,

PrincessHoneysuckle · 19/04/2020 09:32

Pump used in reference to a shoe "put your pumps on"

Quiet meal."I came.home from.work and enjoyed a quiet meal"

Urgh

Carbosug · 19/04/2020 09:40

All those phrases that couples on programmes like Location Location and Escape to the Country use -

We really like this property
This is a lovely space
I can see myself sat in that garden with a glass of wine
We could put our own stamp on this

Stop it NOW, and talk like normal people.

Notso · 19/04/2020 09:45

Also hate people saying they "did" places.

"We did Disney last year"
"We did the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre"
"We did Copenhagen last Christmas"

I find it really offensive, like you've been there for an hour/day/week whatever, seen absolutely everything this place has to offer, and ticked it off your list.

Just say "went" or "visited".

Yes! I hate this, it's sounds absolutely awful.
Usually used by those who claim everyone simply must travel because it broadens the mind, when their only conversation topics are either, boring on about the latest place they've 'done' or moaning about there being another Polish supermarket opening down the road.

Cunninghamsarah · 19/04/2020 09:48

A red 'lip' instead of just saying lipstick

Curate gives me the rage when not used in the normal museum context

Cuppa

Let's have some 'bubbles' meaning prosecco

'We're' pregnant

Being called Mum by a grown adult as in 'good on you, Mum'

Nom nom is just WRONG

isabellerossignol · 19/04/2020 09:49

All those phrases that couples on programmes like Location Location and Escape to the Country use

Yes! Also 'light and airy'. Oh, you mean it's a room with a big window?

Finallygotausername · 19/04/2020 09:50

Smelly. Angry
