'Foodstuffs' and other words too awful to mention.

Some words just really make me shudder. Also, 'meal' and 'helping' as in 'another helping of broccoli'. Noooo

OP posts:
CatteStreet · 19/04/2020 07:04

Apologies to a PP, but I dislike 'loan' as a verb. 'Loan' is a noun, 'lend' the verb.

I cannot stand the use of 'tummy' for womb. It's inaccurate and twee. I don't understand the problem with saying 'the baby is growing in my womb (or uterus, if you like)'.

'Resilience', particularly when used by people who don't really know what it means and think it's a new take on the good old British stiff upper lip.

'Property ladder'. On that theme, 'master bedroom'. Horrifically class ridden phrase.

TheStuffWasBad · 19/04/2020 07:06

Mental health to mean poor mental health

Now this is one I can get fully on board with.

I've even seen BoJo do this. Angry

RestaurantoffBroadway · 19/04/2020 07:07

I sourced a nude heel and a checked trouser and now I'm going to shop the look.

SciFiWoman · 19/04/2020 07:09

‘Suck it up’ .... Aarrgh!!
‘Lush’ .... describing food ... noooo!!
‘Delish’ .... as above ^^
‘Fur babies’ .... nope

Describing the simplist of things as “amazing” ... you ordered a coffee, I brought you one .... hardly ‘amazing’

“You’re a star/ angel/ bless you” .... **see previous example

“Nom nom“ ... makes me want to vom vom!! There’s something a bit ‘eergghh’ about this trend

FoolsLemonTree · 19/04/2020 07:11

Folks/folk. Ughhhhh

Kiln · 19/04/2020 07:22

Suckle.

mumsonthenet · 19/04/2020 07:23

"Them ones".

Wauden
Floor is inside,
Ground is outside
I do not clean the ground in my kitchen lol

BatshitCrazyWoman · 19/04/2020 07:24

Hubby
Brekkie
Biccie (for biscuit)

The fashion and beauty singular - a red lip, a black trouser.

Piece when referring to clothes - new 'pieces' for spring.

Men who refer to their cock in the third person - 'he wants you to play with him' Hmm

KatherineJaneway · 19/04/2020 07:26

Toms

They're tomatoes Hmm

SciFiWoman · 19/04/2020 07:28

Fluid ...
Moist ... just 🤮 both of these make me think of sex ( but not in a good way... eg: ‘Mop up the fluid, spilt bodily fluids’ and ‘moist’ sponge cake - 😱 )

The fam ... chilling with the fam... hanging out with the fam - No!

‘Tentacle’... it just makes my flesh crawl
‘Obstacle’ ... hated the word since school sports day and the ‘obstacle race’ silly, awkward word

‘Rocking’ a look ....
A ‘cheeky’ red lip, ‘showcasing’ her legs, ‘wowed’ with her look, ‘flaunts’ her taut abs .... where the bloody hell did this sort of hideous narrative come from?? It must be American, surely?
No-one actually speaks like this in real life, do they?🤷‍♀️

ZaraW · 19/04/2020 07:29

Any adult using the word tummy. Unfortunately, so many people use it.

derxa · 19/04/2020 07:30

How do you feel about ‘meal planning’? As in writing down dinners/lunches for the week ahead of time. And ‘meal prep’?
Absolutely hideous. Mainly because I never do it.

VivienScott · 19/04/2020 07:34

The word “fancy” makes me shudder

derxa · 19/04/2020 07:45

fizzy pop We used to call it 'jaggy juice' Grin

alfiesmam · 19/04/2020 07:48

Replenish Angry

As in “ I only need to go to the supermarket to replenish fresh fruit veg & milk “

Fuck off Bree ! who talks like that !

FancyPants20 · 19/04/2020 07:51

@CatteStreet That's not quite right though, is it? You wouldn't say, "I lended her ten pounds". Well, you might, but you would be wrong. Smile

A few years ago, a friend of mine said about her baby, "he used me as a dummy" and it made me feel a bit queasy. It still does now, even though I since had my own baby and now know exactly what she meant, but still. Envy

Bluesheep8 · 19/04/2020 07:52

Nom nom nom - no no no!
Gotten - we are not in America
Stay Home - as above.

Bluesheep8 · 19/04/2020 07:54

Oh yes and lip. Singular. As in "a red lip" is that just putting lipstick on one lip? Or "a dewy cheek" is that just applying something to one side of your face? And a nude shoe? Ditto.Confused

TheRattleBag · 19/04/2020 07:55

I agree with many of the ones already mentioned, and would like to add:

Flavourful - mentioned far too much on cookery shows. Not sure what could replace it but it grates on me.

Per calendar month - this only really annoys me when it's used ALL THE TIME on 'Homes Under The Hammer' when talking about property rental. It's the insistence on "per calendar" that bugs me. If you were talking to a friend about renting somewhere you'd just say "it's £600 a month," and they would never think that you meant anything but "per calendar month." (I may have been watching more HUTH recently Grin.)

Wed - to mean married. I've been watching 'Last Tango In Halifax' recently too, and Derek Jacobi's character uses it all the time - "we got wed," "they're getting wed." I think it's to show that he's a bona fide Yorkshireman, but I'm from Yorkshire and have never heard it used like that.

paperandfireworks · 19/04/2020 07:57

"Haters". In place of sceptics or critics.

derxa · 19/04/2020 07:59

Boomer. DS is forever using this to wind me up

CatteStreet · 19/04/2020 07:59

'You wouldn't say, "I lended her ten pounds". '

No, you'd say 'I lent her ten pounds', 'lent' being the past tense of 'lend'.

Toddlerteaplease · 19/04/2020 07:59

Sumptuous. I can't bear it!

MaryBoBary · 19/04/2020 08:00

When talking about breastfeeding - Little Arthur loves the boob. He was on the boob all night.

He's a boob monster 😱

Horrendous.

Hamsham · 19/04/2020 08:01

Slap up meal is the worst one for me.
Up for grabs.
Anything "O' Clock" that isn't a time - wine o' clock, for example.

Also hate when someone says, "having a fag" with regards to smoking. Smoking makes me feel ill as it is, let alone the word, 'fag'.
