Some words just really make me shudder. Also, 'meal' and 'helping' as in 'another helping of broccoli'. Noooo

OP posts:
iusedtobecool · 19/04/2020 03:57

Nourish - often used by Earth mother types.
Cigarette
Toilet
Fag ( as in smoke a fag )
Living my best life
Cheeky ( Nando’s etc )
Date night

FiveShelties · 19/04/2020 04:00

www.foodstuffs.co.nz/

Good thing you are not in NZ @rabbitsnose - Foodstuffs is the company which runs our two or our major supermarkets.

Wincarnis · 19/04/2020 04:03

“Nude heels” instead of beige shoes

“Smash it” in the context of success. Smash what? Why not say ‘win’ or ‘do well’?

Tv chefs who “whack” something into the oven. As well as sounding aggressive, whack can also be used as a euphemism for wank.....

MrsDrudge · 19/04/2020 04:13

Curated - as in a “carefully curated collection of cheese” or something equally boring.
Crafted - why not just use made?
Superb, especially when combined with meal. Superb meal makes me cringe.
Oh, and call out, as in “ she has to be called out on her rudeness”.

BritWifeinUSA · 19/04/2020 04:23

Pjs/Jammies (unless the speaker is under 3)
Think (as in “I work for a large supermarket, think Tesco or Sainsburys” - a large supermarket will do. I know what it is).
Yummy and tummy (unless the speaker is under 3)
Lockdown (it’s not a lockdown, not even close to one)
We’re pregnant
People referring to their baby as “baby” without “the” or “my” in front of it “I put baby to bed”
Lovely
Movies/awesome/fries and other Americanisms said by people purely because they think it makes them sound cool, not because they are Americans
Poo
Wee (as in urine, not the Scottish word for small)

"Shop the look" Confused

Stellamboscha · 19/04/2020 05:07

'poorly' as in 'ill' especially when used by a 'health professional'
'vulnerable' massively overused now

ELM8 · 19/04/2020 05:21

I've been watching more daytime tv and in the fashion segments I hate the use of singular when it should be a pair:

  • a red lip
  • a biker boot
  • a checked trouser
rabbitstooth · 19/04/2020 05:32

revert to' pseudo legal speak that's now being bastardised by anyone whose IQ is lower than they think it is. 'I will revert to you with the answer,' a) it makes no sense as a sentence, you never were me so you can't revert to me and b) 'I will reply to you' is fine and makes perfect sense, just use that!

I made my husband see the error of his ways early into our relationship.

Bananacake20 · 19/04/2020 05:34

'fizzy pop' - just call it fizzy, or pop, or cola, or lemonade or whatever but 'fizzy pop' sounds so weird and babyish.

Also hate 'kiddies', 'lil man', 'lil princess'

I once knew a girl who, in her early twenties, called strawberry milkshake 'pink milk''. I think she thought it sounded cute but she just sounded like a moron.

'making memories' and 'family time' give me the rage and I don't really know why

People who refer to nutritional yeast as 'nooch'. Tends to happen a lot on Instagram but really, nooch?!

Bananacake20 · 19/04/2020 05:41

Oh and those people who say they've got something to ''snack on/nibble on/pick at''

Just say ''eat"

TheStuffWasBad · 19/04/2020 05:42

Can’t abide it when people say “taste buds”

So what do you want people to call them? That's like saying you don't like people saying 'elbow' or 'hair'. That's just what they are called.

TheStuffWasBad · 19/04/2020 05:46

'fizzy pop' - just call it fizzy

Fizzy isn't a noun. You'll probably get people complaining about 'fizzy' being used instead of 'fizzy pop'.

But I can't say anything. I'm Scottish. It's all juice to me, much to the chagrin of some people that move up here. 'Ginger' also acceptable Grin

HeretoThereandBackAgain · 19/04/2020 05:55

‘Do the weekly shop/big shop/small shop’

No, you’re doing the food shopping or grocery shopping.

Meal is cringey, as is breakfast. Picky bits is just dire.

TheStuffWasBad · 19/04/2020 06:13

Meal is cringey, as is breakfast

So what do you call the first meal Grin of the day?

CSIblonde · 19/04/2020 06:17

Panties
Preggers
Preggo
Make love
Lounge
Tummy
Yummy
Hun
Hubby/Hubs

I'm guilty of din dins to get the cat inside tho!

ballroompink · 19/04/2020 06:31

Agree with so many of these! But especially 'Shall I be mother?' I hate it!

Also, re: babies, 'Change his bum' instead of 'Change his nappy'. You're not changing the baby's backside!

ParadiseLaundry · 19/04/2020 06:36

Shop the look"

yes, where did this come from all of a sudden. Just stop it.

I said the DH the other day I really hate people saying 'minibeasts' I find it really twee and Blue Peter. Just say creepy crawlies. Or wood lice, because that's usually what people are talking about.

nzeire · 19/04/2020 06:48

Meal
Cuddle
Ointment
Tummy button
Posh chocs
Swollen glands
Birthing suite
On the boob
Solids
Bits
Undies
Ample bosoms
The girls
The puppies
Pudding
Squash
A glass of Orange

I could go on

barkingfly · 19/04/2020 06:48

So what is a chippy tea? Fried potatoes for dinner and nothing else?

PapayaCoconut · 19/04/2020 06:57

I think it's Fish n chips, @barkingfly. People call that 'the chippy'.

DysonFury · 19/04/2020 06:59

Lip- 'she rocked a red lip'.
Rocked- see above
Reached out - makes me feel murderous

DysonFury · 19/04/2020 07:01

Choc/chocs
Supper
Bosoms- It's bosom FFS

1066vegan · 19/04/2020 07:01

I agree with a lot of these, especially the words which sound affected or twee (too many to list but they come up a lot).

minibeasts is a word that I've started using since I've been teaching. It's common in Early Years and Primary and I think it's fine. creepy crawly has negative connotations (we don't describe somebody or something we like as creepy); minibeasts is more neutral if you want children to be interested in small animals.

I'm really surprised by the hatred for meal. It seems such a boring, standard word.

Mental health to mean poor mental health
