Some words just really make me shudder. Also, 'meal' and 'helping' as in 'another helping of broccoli'. Noooo

'Foodstuffs' sounds good in a Nigerian accent.

1Morewineplease · 18/04/2020 21:00

Not sure that ‘meal’ is worthy of shuddering to, but ‘clunge’ is.

Lailaloo747 · 18/04/2020 21:04

I cringe when people say ‘lashings of’... don’t know why but it just sounds wrong Confused

NoWordForFluffy · 18/04/2020 21:07

@Lailaloo747, me too. I feel almost-embarrassed for the person using the phrase. It feels a bit try hard to me. Also the word 'groaning' when describing a laden table, for the same reason.

Totally my issue, I know! 😂

Oh yes, and it's mentioned so often on here. Usually followed by 'and my strapping boys wolfed it down'. Sounds like an Enid Blyton picnic for wild animals....

I have an unreasonable dislike for using the word 'flavour' for anything that isnt food. Same for 'delicious' in the same context, 'Tom Hardy is delicious' for example. No hes not, in any sense.

CeliaCanth · 18/04/2020 21:08

From another thread...”plating up”.

IAmLegendaryExtra · 18/04/2020 21:09

“Foodstuffs” is very Nigerian

thenewaveragebear1983 · 18/04/2020 21:09

I despise 'cup drinks'; you know, those plastic cheap horrible cups with film lids and straws that you get at PTA events. I hate the words and the sound of the straw in the plastic cup when it's empty does the same horrible spine scratching thing

IAmLegendaryExtra · 18/04/2020 21:10

And what wrong with “helping?” Get a grip op!

Carrie7469 · 18/04/2020 21:10

"meal" is definitely worthy of shuddering. People who say "nom nom nom" and "picky bits" make me shudder too

slipperywhensparticus · 18/04/2020 21:11

Lapping when used about humans tolerable when used about animals

Oily just no reason to use ever

I used to object to moist until terry pratchett used it as a name then I seemed to get over it but in the context of food it still makes me shiver

Kittykat93 · 18/04/2020 21:11

I hate the word meal too!!! Also lashings of butter... Urgh. Thought it was only me who cringed at those things so I feel better now.

Carrie7469 · 18/04/2020 21:12

Oh, and cheeky as in a cheeky drink.

bridgetreilly · 18/04/2020 21:12

Beverages.

They're just drinks, people.

MrsA2017 · 18/04/2020 21:13

“Holibobs” Confused

MrsJoshNavidi · 18/04/2020 21:13

"Loved ones" makes me cringe. I hate the expression.

WindFlower92 · 18/04/2020 21:13

'Washed down with'. Makes me unreasonably angry!

rabbitsnose · 18/04/2020 21:14

Mmm a tasty helping of foodstuffs for my meal made with lashings of sauce. NOOO

OP posts:
slipperywhensparticus · 18/04/2020 21:14

I have an irrational urge to slap people who nom nom nom or nosh people making reference to eating yummy nosh are going straight to hell

rabbitsnose · 18/04/2020 21:14

Worse: second helping

OP posts:
MrsA2017 · 18/04/2020 21:14

Oh and sorry but “Hubby” ...it doesn’t even make sense!

MouthBreathingRage · 18/04/2020 21:15

Oh, I have another one! It died down for a but, but come back with a vengeance since lockdown.

Sourced

Can't say 'I finally found soap/flour/the holy grail down Sainsbury's'. No, one went out like a mighty hunter-gatherer and sourced some Dove handwash....

rabbitsnose · 18/04/2020 21:15

My hubby is 'husby'. Sue me

OP posts:
TheStuffWasBad · 18/04/2020 21:15

What would you say instead of 'three meals a day' if you don't like the word meal?

Peppafrig · 18/04/2020 21:16

The "hubster"
