Do you weigh out salad and fruit?

Just that really...would be good to have some advice if anyone could shed any light?

I've started up my healthy eating again (something to focus on at the moment) and want to [steadily] lose a couple of stone.

Currently I'm only weighing out potatoes, pasta and measuring out milk. Only having one banana a day too, as they are high in calories.

I read online that you are meant to weigh out all food, including salad/veg...but other sources are saying only weigh out carbs?

I'm confused! Any fitness gurus out there that can help? Sorry this probably isn't an AIBU.

Life’s too short to weigh a lettuce.

HelloTerrance · 18/04/2020 15:38

I will never weigh out salad or fruit that is bonkers surely!

I use the nutracheck App which has pictures to guide or for carbs the carbs and cals app has pictures too.

mynameiscalypso · 18/04/2020 15:39

When I start weighing lettuce leaves, it's a pretty good sign that my eating disorder has returned.

Midsommar · 18/04/2020 15:40

See this is what I thought, it seems pretty ridiculous to weigh out spinach leaves and tomato! Just would be helpful to get some clarity is all.

I’ve been calorie counting (gave it up all winter but am back on the wagon now) and I don’t bother counting vegetables. Fruit yes because the sugar content is higher so there’s more of a point. But Jesus look at the amount of calories in a carrot - you’re getting so much more nutrients and fibre than calories it’s not worth counting. They are freebies.

Pipandmum · 18/04/2020 15:45

Lettuce has so little calories it's not worth it. Things like carrots have relatively more, however if you use something like My Fitness Pal, it will give you nutrients value for carrots by size.
Some fruits too have a lot of calories- but as most cone in handy one serving sizes it's not hard to figure out their calorific values.
Use your common sense, a good calorie app, and it will be easy to keep track.

Pinkblueberry · 18/04/2020 15:45

For what purpose though? You’d have to be eating an insanely large portion of salad for it to have a negative effect on your weight loss. A handful of cherry tomatoes won’t tip the scales and you can have a good guess at how many calories they would have without getting the scales out. So it’s a definite no from me.

Life’s too short to weigh a lettuce

This. Please don’t do this.

PubsClubsMinistryOfSound · 18/04/2020 15:46

Is it even possible to weigh a portion of spinach?

mypoorfurbaby · 18/04/2020 15:48

The simplest way to eat earthily is to have
1/3 or more of your plate as fruit or veg, then 1/3 protein and 1/3 carbs.
You can substitute some of the carbs for more veg/fruit.

That way you don't have to weigh anything

Midsommar · 18/04/2020 15:48

@PubsClubsMinistryOfSound unfortunately yes it is

PurpleDaisies · 18/04/2020 15:50

No. I weigh some carbs occasionally so I’m not giving myself too big portions generally but I never weigh veg.

Midsommar · 18/04/2020 15:51

@mynameiscalypso really sorry to hear about your previous eating disorder. I hope you didn't find this post insensitive. If you did, I apologise Flowers

I lost nearly 2 stone following slimming world (didn't go to the classes just did it at home). I ate as much fruit / veg / salad as I liked. The weight has stayed off too so far!

Manda34 · 18/04/2020 15:51

Im on a fat loss phase (down to 59kg from 66 in Jan). I dont weigh green veg/salad stuff. I do weight fruit. I do weigh all root vegetables. I weigh all other things or track inwardly as I know the calories roughly.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 18/04/2020 15:52

No I do not. I agree life is too short to weigh a lettuce or carrot

Nobody has ever been over weight because they over ate lettuce

gaggiagirl · 18/04/2020 15:53

I'm a calories counter. I weigh and count fruit, potato, carrot, parsnip, peas . Everything else I have weighed in the past and it comes to so little I wouldn't bother. It would be really difficult to eat 100 cal of mushroom or leafy greens. A handful of tomato isn't goings to tip you over your daily allowance.

Midsommar · 18/04/2020 15:54

@banivani how are you getting on with your diet/eating plan?

OP posts:
koshkatt · 18/04/2020 15:54

I don't eat much fruit due to the carbs and sugar. I would never weigh veggies though. Green veggies are good for you!

PubsClubsMinistryOfSound · 18/04/2020 15:55

The big bags feel like they only weigh a few grams! And half of that must be the plastic!

I would've thought the better approach is to eat as much veg as you like, since it's nearly all low calorie. Obviously don't just sit and eat a whole bag of potatoes, but for spinach to become a significant enough calorie intake to monitor, you'd probably have to eat so much you'd shit your guts out.

KnockDownNinja · 18/04/2020 15:55

No point with veg or most salad. There is a point with fruit, depending on how strict your diet is and they are relatively high in sugar.
This varies between fruit though.

If I'm focused on losing weight, I'd be more careful with bananas than, for example, raspberries because they contain much more sugar.

BentNeckLady · 18/04/2020 15:57

Only a person with an eating disorder would weigh Spinach.

knittingaddict · 18/04/2020 15:57

You're on the pathway to insanity if you start weighing lettuce.

Vegetables are good for you and generally contain few calories compared with other foods. Unless you are eating ridiculous quantities then eating them has to be a good thing. Also many vegetables are already portion controlled ie 1 courgette, 1 carrot, 3 tomatoes.

Pickles89 · 18/04/2020 15:58

I consider calories in green veg (besides peas, which are quite calorific!) negligible - more often than not you use more calories digesting them than they contain! Mushrooms I discount too. Colourful veg like carrots, red peppers, sweetcorn etc and starchy ones like parsnips or potatoes I would count. I'm quite casual with calorie counting though, rounding up or down to the nearest 50.

PilatesPeach · 18/04/2020 15:58

I lost 3 stones on WW and only weighed potatoes/sweet potatoes (and rice & pasta) but no tother veg. No need, most is water & fibre - some are more carby eg sweetcorn but even so don't weigh it. I also ate & still eat a banana a days & yes berry fruits are lower in sugar but I had a couple of portions of those as well as a banana.
