Do you weigh out salad and fruit?

Just that really...would be good to have some advice if anyone could shed any light?

I've started up my healthy eating again (something to focus on at the moment) and want to [steadily] lose a couple of stone.

Currently I'm only weighing out potatoes, pasta and measuring out milk. Only having one banana a day too, as they are high in calories.

I read online that you are meant to weigh out all food, including salad/veg...but other sources are saying only weigh out carbs?

I'm confused! Any fitness gurus out there that can help? Sorry this probably isn't an AIBU.

2 stone down by logging everything I eat in My Fitness Pal so yes, I weigh everything Blush

Midsommar · 18/04/2020 15:59

Thank you all. I appreciate your comments and definitely will not be weighing out food unnecessarily!

I calorie count. I weigh everything. I’ve lost 3.5 stone so it works for me.

Hagisonthehill · 18/04/2020 16:03

The only veg/fruit to weigh is an avacado.
I'm following weight watchers and watch carbs and eat in moderation as I relearn portion size, only rarely have pastry or cake, watchy gin/wine intake and take complete days off when I eat what I want on birthdays, celebrations.
Keep a food diary,be honest about every little thing you eat,(easy when you start but the temptations creep in).If you have a bad day try and make it just one and start again.
I'm Menopausal age and it's doable but mostly depends most on your mindset.
Tonight I am having a vegetable curry and offsetting all those unweighted veg with some wine!

merryhouse · 18/04/2020 16:08

I weigh veg so that I know I'm doing the right amount for full portions (no point saying ooh I have ten portions a day if they're all ten grammes)

On the other hand, I'm not counting calories.

(... wonders what the overlap is between the people who don't count calories in vegetables and the people who claim to put on weight if they eat more than 1200 calories a day...)

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 18/04/2020 16:10

OP and don't waste time chewing iceberg lettuce. Get darker leaves like rocket, spinach etc. So much more nutritious and with actual flavour. Supermarkets sell mixes of rocket, spinach and watercress. It totally changes your salads from meh to yay

Goatinthegarden · 18/04/2020 16:14

I stick everything in MyFitnessPal but usually just guesstimate the amount/weight of the veg I had, unless it’s something calorific like an avocado. I eat loads and loads of veg in a day, so it helps me to keep a rough track of it.

The other reason being, I also like to track nutrients etc. (I feel smug when it tells me I’ve reached my fibre goal, or vitC goal or whatever!)

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 18/04/2020 16:18

Yep. I weigh and log everything. Everything. Life's too short for me to spend the rest of it as massively overweight as I was in my 40s Blush

Midsommar · 18/04/2020 16:18

@OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow I don't really eat lettuce or cucumber. Much prefer rocket and spinach!

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 18/04/2020 16:21

Only a person with an eating disorder would weigh Spinach.

Not true. I've never had an eating disorder. I was overweight as my portion sizes were too big, that's all.

mynameiscalypso · 18/04/2020 16:37

Oh that's so sweet of you to say @Midsommar but it was totally fine, thank you though Thanks

ALemonyPea · 18/04/2020 16:39

Just bananas and soft fruit, the rest I don't.

Beautiful3 · 18/04/2020 16:45

I've lost half a stone these past 3 weeks due to struggling to get food delivered. I've been reducing our portions to make our food last longer. I think reducing what you eat is great but life is too short to weigh out salad.

HelloTerrance · 18/04/2020 16:52

I do log them in my app but I just guess or go with the recommended portion. I always over estimate though.

B1gG1rlPants5 · 18/04/2020 17:02

I just ate the last big slice of chocolate cake. I didn't weigh that Cake

Even when I bake, I never weigh anything

I like exercise as an alternative ( reduced in lockdown)

LesFleursDuMal · 18/04/2020 17:28

Going against the grain here.

I was doing a low cal diet back when I was fat. With the help of my fitness pal. I used to weight absolutely everything religiously, salad leaves, cucumber - everything, and log everything in. Lost almost 7 stone.

This was 5 years ago. Kept it all off, I'm the same size as after weight loss. This didn't lead to any disorders and I don't weight anything any more.

So it worked for me, but I appreciate everyone is different, of course.

Goatinthegarden · 18/04/2020 19:20

@B1gG1rlPants5 I need to weigh food even though I exercise hard. As soon as I stop weighing, my portions creep up and food just seems to jump into my mouth.

I don’t really restrict myself though - pre-lockdown I ate out several times a week, rarely say no to a dessert. It just helps me keep a wee lid on it - and to realise that if I want the cake, I need to run a bit further! Grin

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 18/04/2020 19:39

Well I've just tried that app pp recommended. I am not as bad as I thought😱 Niccccce.

wantmorenow · 18/04/2020 20:50

Carby food yes - so that's fruit, peppers (also fruit), root veg, peas, beans, berries, etc

Leafy low/no carbs no - spinach, lettuce, brassicas, asparagus, aubergine, cauli etc

I'm using MFP cause I'm overweight. Sad

banivani · 18/04/2020 20:52

@Midsommar well today I’m about 400 calories over because I had buttered naans, ice cream, kanelbullar and Coole Swan for dinner so I didn’t make my limit. This weight loss lark after 40 when you have a sedentary office job is no lark. Angry I’m not that healthy an eater but when I’m counting calories I try to make them count iyswim, no point in wasting them on stuff that won’t fill you up I mean.

WestieUK · 18/04/2020 21:34

I do weigh my fruit, in terms of berries, but not full fruit like oranges, apples, etc. I also weigh out avocado as that's high in fat but the rest I don't.

delilahbucket · 18/04/2020 21:39

I don't weigh any veg and I don't eat a lot of fruit but when I do, I weigh it due to the sugar content. I know how much a lot of "portions" look like in veg as I have previously weighed them. Everything else gets weighed.

PenisBeakerDipper · 18/04/2020 21:43

Not weigh, but I might measure in a cup or eyeball it to log - I.e. roughly a cup of lettuce,1/4 cup tomatoes etc. Not just about calories - sometimes I’m trying to increase the number and size of portions of things for nutritional reasons.

Duvetday8 · 18/04/2020 21:48

Yes for fruit, a lot of fruit has high sugar and can have quite a few calories. Vegetables yes if something like potatoes but otherwise no

kmc1111 · 19/04/2020 09:44

When I’m trying to lose weight I do weigh fruit and vegetables, just not lettuce, spinach etc.

The calories do add up when fruit and veg is a significant part of your diet, and something like an extra mango as a snack and an extra serve of peas with dinner can add almost 300 calories. I think a lot of people get discouraged eating healthy because they underestimate their calories from healthy food. If you eat a chocolate bar and a packet of crisps it’s hard to pretend you didn’t just take in a bunch of calories, but with fruit and veg it’s easy to just brush it off as 20 calories here, 50 calories there. Counting it all for a while helps.
