To have bought some clothes from Tesco to cheer myself up?

Went to Tesco this morning to do the food shopping, it's the first time I've been out other than going to work in two weeks. Whilst I was there I thought I'd grab myself some clothes because with all this warm weather we've had I don't own any summer clothes and sandals. I picked up quite a bit (£180 worth) for myself and got a couple of dresses for DD's aswell. People were giving me some right weird looks and the lady behind me at the check out kept tutting. The cashier was admiring the clothes and saying that she needed to grab some bits for her Dd before she left work today. Aibu to think there's nothing wrong with picking up other essentials while your already there anyway? Aren't clothes essentials? I haven't ordered anything online since this all started because I don't want to add pressure to delivery drivers. I'm a key worker myself (royal mail) and know how worrying it is to still be working under these circumstances. After years of being a stay at home mum in a financially abusive relationship, buying clothes makes me happy because for years I've had nothing. Buying those bits today has really lifted my mood aibu?

£180 for ten adult items and six items for children seems like a bargain to me. Children outgrow their clothes from one year to another, so buying two summer dresses for her daughters - ONE each - and a pair of sandals each, plus a single item of footwear for herself and a sensible range of summer things that she simply doesn't have already is not excessive. It might seem a lot all at once, but we are used to picking up clothing over the course of weeks and months, a bit here and a bit there. OP can't do that, so it makes sense to get it all at once.

Honestly. £180 for sixteen items?! Jeez. I'd be happy about that too.

Mombie2016 · 19/04/2020 11:26

YANBU, all 3 of my DC have very conveniently had a growth spurt in the last 4 weeks, I cant leave the house and I'm struggling to get them new clothes online

Scruffyoak · 19/04/2020 11:29

I brought a bikini just because they usually sell out in my size and I like the style!

Chillicheese123 · 19/04/2020 11:30

@mombie2016 I’ve ordered dd things from Uniqlo and Adidas this last couple of weeks. Big sale on Adidas, got her sliders and trainers for next to nothing. They’ve got shorts, tops etc too in sale

TheNoodlesIncident · 19/04/2020 11:39

Clothes takes far longer. You wander around looking at what you like, see if its in your size, see if you like something else better, go back to original choice.

Maybe you do that, not everybody does. In the current situation, most people would see the point of making choices quickly and trusting their own judgement on whether it will suit, will it fit, etc. So yes, look in the clothes aisles, see something nice, get your usual size off the rack and into the trolley. Faffing around chopping and changing when you've already got a wardrobe full of summer stuff at home would not be reasonable, buying a capsule wardrobe of seasonal items that you don't have in around 20 minutes (so just over a minute per item) is reasonable. Utterly. And I'm thankful OP got out of her erstwhile abusive situation and now has the freedom to buy some clothes that she will need, good for her.

Lucky she didn't see me then. I had to go to Sainsbury's because my prescription was sent there even though I asked them to change it... I collected my prescription then went mad in the biscuits and chocolate aisles. For weeks I'd been meal planning etc and forgotten any good stuff, we were climbing the walls! Grin

I went to Boots yesterday because I needed some decongestant tablets and hayfever spray. I also bought some mascara and some eye make-up remover while I was in there, figuring it was better to buy ones that I know don't give me an adverse reaction rather than buy several different ones that do, and throw them away.

I bloody wish someone had tutted at me, I was properly up for giving someone a large piece of what's left of my mind.

Yesterday I bought a small rug for my bedroom. It was in B & M

A little cheering up is good for the soul. I haven't browsed any clothes sections of the supermarkets though as I have more than enough clothes/shoes etc to last me until 2025.

I hope the world will be back to normal by 2025

When you think about it, it’s so bloody strange that you can go to a supermarket and buy what the hell you want whilst all the other shops are closed. Surely if we should not be clothes/book/lamp shopping then it should only be possible to buy food and medicine from the supermarket? Somebody who knows something about Economics might be along in a minute : this doesn’t seem like a free market.

CaptSkippy · 19/04/2020 13:23

I'd say let them tut. Maybe if you're feeling brave, turn around next time and ask them if they are okay or if they would like a tissue?

It's no one's beewax what you are buying and why.

Floatyboat · 19/04/2020 14:33

@CaptSkippy

That would make it Mumsnet irl. Could be quite fun actually.

Might start an argument with some cross breed owners on my walk later.

Mummyshark2019 · 19/04/2020 14:39

You did nothing wrong OP. Ignore the idiots. X

Floatyboat · 19/04/2020 18:41

Thanks for clearing that up mummyshark. didnt realise you were the one to give the definitive answer.

Some people think op was wrong, some people dont think she was is more balanced.

Rathersexyfortysomethingblonde · 19/04/2020 19:22

People are fucking ridiculous really. I just keep shopping online for clothes as I Need them. They make me happy and cheer me up.
Clothes are essential if you like them and need them, fed up with this shitty judgment.

SleepingStandingUp · 19/04/2020 19:28

@likeafishneedsabike you can buy a book from Tesco and not Watwratones because Tesco is open for essentials and it would be pointless to block off aisles of frivolous items just for the sake of it. And then Steve would scan an illicit book through but Mary wouldn't and then Steve would've stuck at the til demanding to know why he can't buy a book and it's essential for his MH.
Waterstoens stocks nothing "ESSENTIAL" so it isn't open.

Were in a pandemic and trying to protect lives. The free market doesn't come into it right now.

hannabarbera · 19/04/2020 20:43

If the shop is open you have every right to buy whatever they are selling.

SpeedofaSloth · 19/04/2020 20:47

YANBU. I am still working, no uniform, and a couple of my blouses had gone a bit tatty so I replaced them with two new ones from Sainsbury's today.
If the shop is selling them, you can buy them, surely.

Floatyboat · 19/04/2020 20:51

Your purchase sounds essential speed sloth
