To have bought some clothes from Tesco to cheer myself up?

Went to Tesco this morning to do the food shopping, it's the first time I've been out other than going to work in two weeks. Whilst I was there I thought I'd grab myself some clothes because with all this warm weather we've had I don't own any summer clothes and sandals. I picked up quite a bit (£180 worth) for myself and got a couple of dresses for DD's aswell. People were giving me some right weird looks and the lady behind me at the check out kept tutting. The cashier was admiring the clothes and saying that she needed to grab some bits for her Dd before she left work today. Aibu to think there's nothing wrong with picking up other essentials while your already there anyway? Aren't clothes essentials? I haven't ordered anything online since this all started because I don't want to add pressure to delivery drivers. I'm a key worker myself (royal mail) and know how worrying it is to still be working under these circumstances. After years of being a stay at home mum in a financially abusive relationship, buying clothes makes me happy because for years I've had nothing. Buying those bits today has really lifted my mood aibu?

The police have issued recent guidelines showing this is absolutely fine. Not all of your shop needs to be necessities.

Well the government said any should allowed to trade at the moment can sell anything inside that should, so 🤷🏻‍♀️

If Tesco didn’t want people shopping the clothes they section it off with rope of some such

It’s a lockdown, but we are no rules about not being allowed to treat ourselves or have fun. Despite what some on here think, some posters would have us miserable as dust drinking tap water and eating dust.

Enjoy your clothes

MinesaPinot · 18/04/2020 14:22

FFS people need to wind their necks in. If you are in a shop and it's selling clothes whilst you're doing your shopping you are perfectly entitled to buy. I am so fed up with self-appointed busybodies policing what others are buying.

Imapotato · 18/04/2020 14:24

Don’t feel bad. If you need clothes you need clothes.

I ordered dd2 (12) a load of stuff from new look. Hardly anything fits her from last year and she needed stuff, she can’t walk around naked. Supermarket clothes are no good for her, it’s all either too young or too old, so it had to be an online order.

Don’t feel bad. It’s not a misery contest. You’re still allowed to do things that make you happy and buy clothes if you need them.

captainprincess · 18/04/2020 14:25

If they sell it, you can buy it 🤷🏼‍♀️

crazychemist · 18/04/2020 14:27

Perfectly reasonable. I got some huffy looks from people for picking up clothes for DD in sainsburies. Last years summer dresses don’t cover her knickers as she’s grown a lot and she couldn’t get her feet into her shoes. People are ridiculous - because it is a tough time, some think you should be as miserable as possible, instead of assuming you are making sensible choices.

GREATAUNT1 · 18/04/2020 14:30

Aaaaw OP, that made me feel sad. It’s just a shame old tut had to ruin it for you. I’d’ve been tempted to say that I’m buying these lovely new things so I don’t end up looking like a bag of shit like you do. Enjoy your new clothes!

Lweji · 18/04/2020 14:33

Last time I went to a large supermarket I also picked up some stuff. A couple of long sleeved t-shirts for DS, who chews his pjs. HmmConfused
And a hoodie for myself, from the men's section, because I had none to wear at home and I'm working from home.
I've ended up stealing a couple of old track bottoms from DS, as my clothes are almost all not of the home comfort variety.

MikeUniformMike · 18/04/2020 14:34

Can't you fashion some clothes from loo paper? They wouldn't be much use in wet weather but you're not meant to go out at the moment.

PrincessPain · 18/04/2020 14:36

From what I've heard tesco staff are currently receiving 50% off the f&f clothing range to say thank you.
So clearly Tesco are happy to be selling clothes right now, and as you're already there I don't see the harm.

BirdieFriendReturns · 18/04/2020 14:36

This is Mumsnet. Certain people on here want everyone to run their purchases past them first.

I was told I didn’t need to buy sanitary protection - just use an old sheet or some leaves instead!

Some people are seriously weird at the moment.

1Wildheartsease · 18/04/2020 14:37

Enjoy your purchases OP. Your pleasure in them is something that can give everyone else a lift too. We all need more joy in the world just now :)

(The wrongly huffing/puffing woman probably thoroughly enjoyed dispproving - so don't worry about her either.)

Thanks for keeping the mail running. That is certainly helping to keep us happy.

RingtheBells · 18/04/2020 14:38

I hope you also bought a hairshirt for your penance OPGrin

Thisisitisit · 18/04/2020 14:39

YANBU.

BirdieFriendReturns · 18/04/2020 14:39

There was a very odd post on the CV forum that got deleted.

The OP wanted to buy some chocolate and wine and another poster claimed to work in a supermarket and said that the OP was murdering people by going shopping. Apparently they were at home “literally shaking and sobbing” at the thought of a customer buying things.

batvixen123 · 18/04/2020 14:40

Definitely nothing wrong in buying some clothes along with your groceries. If Tesco didn't want you to, they wouldn't be laying them out.

Mummyoflittledragon · 18/04/2020 14:41

I was just about to say you need a hairshirt but see I’ve been beaten to it. 😁

Nonnymum · 18/04/2020 14:41

Of course its OK to but clothes with your supermarket shop. In fact you can buy whatever you want. Plenty of people are buying alcohol, chocolate and biscuits etc. They are hardly essentials. It's not ilegal to do buy a treat.!

AbsolomChautney · 18/04/2020 14:41

She was probably just impatient.

Louiselouie0890 · 18/04/2020 14:44

Yabu! You need to live off rice and beans and wear leaves for clothes! Dont even buy toilet roll just squat and wiggle that's what god made air for.

TroysMammy · 18/04/2020 14:44

Of course clothes are essential unless we are all going to go out naked. If everyone was shopping naked in Tesco that would soon put people off their pasta, milk and bread.

ArgumentativeAardvaark · 18/04/2020 14:46

I’m in a big ASDA right now. Just got shooed away from the (open) clothing aisle by a staff member saying “essential purchases only madam”. While she was restocking it! I told her that, unfortunately, I was buying some essential size 16 trousers because I have eaten so much chocolate in lockdown that my size 14s no longer fit Blush.

AllTheUserNamesAreTaken · 18/04/2020 14:46

@Summersunandoranges no no NO! Only pasta and bread. Milk? Milk? What decadence is this. Grin

BirdieFriendReturns · 18/04/2020 14:47

There was someone on AIBU recently saying bread and milk are not essentials and you should have porridge made with water and instead of tea, have a mug of warm water with lemon.

It makes me laugh that random Mumsnetters think they have some kind of authority and everyone will do as they say.

G3m81 · 18/04/2020 14:47

If you are shopping for food and decide to get some clothes there shouldn't be a problem. We are all buying clothes because Tesco have given staff 50% off. I don't actually know when or where I'm going to wear them but with the discount we'd be crazy not to take advantage.
