To have bought some clothes from Tesco to cheer myself up?

Went to Tesco this morning to do the food shopping, it's the first time I've been out other than going to work in two weeks. Whilst I was there I thought I'd grab myself some clothes because with all this warm weather we've had I don't own any summer clothes and sandals. I picked up quite a bit (£180 worth) for myself and got a couple of dresses for DD's aswell. People were giving me some right weird looks and the lady behind me at the check out kept tutting. The cashier was admiring the clothes and saying that she needed to grab some bits for her Dd before she left work today. Aibu to think there's nothing wrong with picking up other essentials while your already there anyway? Aren't clothes essentials? I haven't ordered anything online since this all started because I don't want to add pressure to delivery drivers. I'm a key worker myself (royal mail) and know how worrying it is to still be working under these circumstances. After years of being a stay at home mum in a financially abusive relationship, buying clothes makes me happy because for years I've had nothing. Buying those bits today has really lifted my mood aibu?

Of course you need to buy “luxuries”, Treasury needs your VAT money!

GreenTeaMug · 18/04/2020 15:17

best jeans of my life have come from Tesco. I am wearing the navy blue pair now. So so soft an comfortable and look really classy.

Total revelation.

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 18/04/2020 15:19

You are allowed to buy clothes. Even more so if it cheers you up

180 of clothes would take a long time to put through the till, she was probably annoyed because everything takes so bloody long now!

The other day I went shopping, chose the till with the shortest queue feeling really smug that no one else noticed this till had no queue. The woman in front seemed to be buying about 1000 easter eggs, plus clothes plus what looked like about 2 weeks worth of food. It then took a very longtime to put through the till. I was pissed off at myself for feeling smug when Id actually chosen the longest queue. I suspect the women noticed and thought I was annoyed about the easter eggs, or the clothes. I couldnt give a shiny shit what you buy but I was frustrated in general with how long everything was taking

I suspect she probably was just pissed off in general. You dont have to edit your behaviour just because it annoys a grumpy woman. I think this is something MN is particularly bad at actually. Thinking that because something annoys them that person shouldnt do it. Their annoyance is their problem not yours.

Superdooper29 · 18/04/2020 15:19

Nothing wrong with it. I got tutted at by a lady this morning and had a few looks. I went to the shop for essentials. I also bought a disposable bbq, reduced Easter eggs and some garden bits - hula hoops, bubble mix, giant child. It’s DS’s birthday this week so just a few extra treats. I haven’t been out before today for 4 weeks. Don’t feel guilty if you are there anyway for essentials what’s the problem?

Rosehip10 · 18/04/2020 15:20

The person was probably pissed off due to the time to process £180 clothes, take off security tags etc.

peppermintcapsules · 18/04/2020 15:24

I have resting bitch face, so just look at tutters and say, 'Have you got something to say to me?' That always works. Of course YANBU. I've just ordered loads of paint to collect curbside and some fans to build up for Summer, etc to redo a bedroom. It's on sale to buy so I'm buying it.

missyB1 · 18/04/2020 15:28

I’ve bought myself some body scrub and firming lotion, not “essential” but I might as well try and tackle my saggy lumpy bits whilst I’ve got the time!

Lovemusic33 · 18/04/2020 15:28

People are really odd and judgemental at the moment, of course there’s nothing wrong with buying clothes, people need clothes. I just ordered clothes from Next online but was only allowed to buy kids clothes, dd1 is 16 and can no longer squeeze into the kids range (unless elasticated waist) so could only get bits for dd2. We don’t have a big tesco near by, if we did I would probably be buying clothes whilst doing a food shop.

NoMoreDickheads · 18/04/2020 15:32

Buy anything you want (though ideally going in for some essentials too.) This is fine.

Beautiful3 · 18/04/2020 15:33

Ignore them. Glad you treated yourself.

SpiritEssence · 18/04/2020 15:33

I got some clothes from Asda yesterday. Nothing wrong with it all and that's coming from someone who works in a supermarket Smile

paradisefalls · 18/04/2020 15:41

Thanks everyone I'm feeling less guilty now Confused kids have gone to their dads so I'm enjoying trying on my new clothes. Even if I can't go anywhere to wear them Grin this outfit has to be my fave. Oh I love F&f!

You have a gorgeous bedroom too, OP. That looks so fresh and clean today. I'm impressed.

PurpleDaisies · 18/04/2020 15:44

I have bedroom envy!!

You look lovely.

formerbabe · 18/04/2020 15:45

Any drinks, alcoholic or otherwise are non essential. Unless you're a baby reliant on milk, we could all survive on tap water. We could all live solely on bread or rice couldn't we? The government could distribute large sacks of rice and then we'd never have to go food shopping.

I'm going shopping later...I might buy a new lipstick

Frangipanini · 18/04/2020 15:45

I think she was tutting because she probably wouldn't look as good in that outfit.
That's fab and you look great in it, even if I can't see your face!

Glitterb · 18/04/2020 15:46

If the shops are selling the stuff then why can’t you buy it?

mumwon · 18/04/2020 15:48

I was wondering about ordering some new undies (we cant go out) now I think I will have a look at other clothes (the way things are going if I & half of the rest of the population don't watch out we will all have to order new clothes - bigger ones! Gin)
seriously somebody makes & sells these clothes so hopefully we are keeping some companies going - hopefully staff are working safely though

JellyfishandShells · 18/04/2020 15:49

Going up or down a couple of sizes over a few months is hardly unknown - some lighter weight clothing in a new size is not in any way a luxury.

macaroniandpizza · 18/04/2020 15:49

paradisefalls im guessing you missed the memo weve all to wear rags and survive on bread and water Grin

Bbang · 18/04/2020 15:49

I’ve just spent £300ish on new clothes for us all from various supermarkets. Why not? All the kids needed new shoes and basics like socks and pants. And the baby needed onesies and vests I’d had to cut the feet off his Blush I got us all a few summery outfits also. I think this is fine, I’m still working as a key worker in a big retail store and we rent judging what people are buying more bemoaning and grumbling about the sheer amount because we are very understaffed and exhausted.

Bbang · 18/04/2020 15:50

Oh just seen your pic! Wow you look fab.
I am far to fat for an outfit like that lol!

formerbabe · 18/04/2020 15:53

I think she was tutting because she probably wouldn't look as good in that outfit

I doubt it. Nothing to do with the op but no one goes round tutting at people buying clothes normally. It's quite clearly because of the current situation.

ultrablue · 18/04/2020 15:55

I work in retail and wish people would get this you can't buy it, it's not essential thinking out of their heads. Our warehouse is now overflowing with stock, meaning we are running out of room to store the essentials, all it needs is a little common sense. If it's on the shelves you can actually buy it you know.

fuckinghellthisshit · 18/04/2020 15:56

I got a bollocking from a ridiuclous man in Tesco yesterday because I had DD12 with me. I wear arm splints and cannot form a grip due to disabilities and am aloud to bring her or DS with me as we are very rural. They cannot drive and it's unfair to have a 10/12 yo shop alone. We had masks and gloves, hand santiser and strictly observed the distancing. All fine until we get to the check out and a man pushes in front (we had of course left a 2m gap) and then when asked to go behind started verbally abusing me to the extent he was lunging towards me and spitting - literally foaming at the mouth!
We're all irritable, irritated and irritating at the moment. Tolerance is a virtue and we must hang on to our manners.
