To have bought some clothes from Tesco to cheer myself up?

Went to Tesco this morning to do the food shopping, it's the first time I've been out other than going to work in two weeks. Whilst I was there I thought I'd grab myself some clothes because with all this warm weather we've had I don't own any summer clothes and sandals. I picked up quite a bit (£180 worth) for myself and got a couple of dresses for DD's aswell. People were giving me some right weird looks and the lady behind me at the check out kept tutting. The cashier was admiring the clothes and saying that she needed to grab some bits for her Dd before she left work today. Aibu to think there's nothing wrong with picking up other essentials while your already there anyway? Aren't clothes essentials? I haven't ordered anything online since this all started because I don't want to add pressure to delivery drivers. I'm a key worker myself (royal mail) and know how worrying it is to still be working under these circumstances. After years of being a stay at home mum in a financially abusive relationship, buying clothes makes me happy because for years I've had nothing. Buying those bits today has really lifted my mood aibu?

I'd have tutted back at her

Mary46 · 18/04/2020 15:56

You look lovely. I think it boosts morale a bit a few nice clothes. Just ignore them!! I got tshirt dealz last week we have very little open in Ireland at moment.

Peppafrig · 18/04/2020 15:57

It depends we're you shopping for clothes while there was a queue outside of people waiting to get essentials. If so you were unreasonable if they wasn't a queue then it's fine to browse clothes .

okiedokieme · 18/04/2020 15:57

You can buy what you wasn't whilst you shop for food (going just for clothes isn't really allowed but I don't think they would refuse to sell them to you)

@Frangipanini

I completely agree! I am really placid but tutters make me see red and I always pull them up on it. Either have the balls to say something or keep quiet!

My elderly mum was trying to look at Christmas cards in Sainsburys a few years ago, she was still on crutches from a broken ankle and being very slow when someone tutted at her.

They didn’t see her 30something daughter nearby and expect me to have a go (my mum was mortified at me but I was absolutely incensed!)

Sorry for the detail, OP you did nothing wrong and you look fantastic!

Not sure it's a good idea to try on your clothes before you wash them, though. Or at least leave for a few days out of the way.

I'm not overly cautious, but I did wash the clothes I bought immediately and tend to leave other shopping or wash it too.
You don't know who's been sneezing or coughing on them, or even trying them on.
Stay safe.

ArgumentativeAardvaark · 18/04/2020 16:01

I also bought a disposable bbq, reduced Easter eggs and some garden bits - hula hoops, bubble mix, giant child.

GrinGrin giant children are definitely not essential!

scarbados · 18/04/2020 16:02

If we weren't supposed to be buying clothes, the shop wouldn't be selling them. AFAIC when I go to Tesco, they have it in stock, I can buyit if I want to.

Clockworkprincess · 18/04/2020 16:03

Tbh i think clothes are essential. At the moment am shoe horning ds into last years summer clothes (thankfully he is very slim) but he will need more clothes very soon as he's currently moving into 5-6 and all his current shorts etc are 3 - 4. Poor kid is starting to look like he's wearing hotpants. I will be picking shorts up when doing an essential shop in the supermarket as they are best value and prices.

Spied · 18/04/2020 16:13

You should have stayed in bed in your PJs.
Your bedroom is much too nice to ever have to leave Grin

peachypetite · 18/04/2020 16:13

Impressed you managed to find £180 worth of clothes in Tesco to buy!

Cherrychops100 · 18/04/2020 16:14

I've just found out I'm having a girl and couldn't resist buying some little baby bits when we did our food shopping Smile

namechangegamechange2 · 18/04/2020 16:15

There was an article in the fail today zooming in on people with non essential stuff trying to whip up outrage. I did a shop yesterday at Aldi and bought lots of wine, crisps and choc (as well as regular food) the cashier said she doesn't care what people buy she still has to go to work either way

HuggedTheRedwoods · 18/04/2020 16:17

YANBU. You dont need to explain your purchases and if the store didnt want to sell clothes they could easily rope off those sections. I bought candles in Asda the other night but hid them behind brocolli and a cauli while getting to the till as there's definitely a funny vibe out there from some self appointed trolley police.

PepePig · 18/04/2020 16:18

Nothing wrong at all. I ordered bits online today because I'm due in a few weeks and I wanted clothes that actually fit me for hospital, comfy pants, etc. I'm not going to hospital with my belly hanging out because my t shirts are a bit short Confused.

Don't let anyone make you feel bad for grabbing things. They're idiots.

CoronaIsShit · 18/04/2020 16:24

Christ! If tone checkout operator had tutted at me, I’d have asked why the store is selling them then! As a PP stated they could have put barriers on the clothes aisles if they didn’t want the checkout staff dealing with time consuming purchases and wanted customers in and out quickly.

diddl · 18/04/2020 16:29

Maybe you seemed to have a lot & she just wanted to get out of there?

Or she was annoyed at the cashier keep commenting or it was something else entirely?

I've tutted & rolled my eyes at myself before when I'm in the queue & thinking about something else entirely!

Lweji · 18/04/2020 16:35

Most "non essential" items are stock that supermarkets have purchased months ago. Certainly clothes.
Buying them means that supermarkets can continue to pay their employees. If we only bought the minimum, they'd end up with loads of out of date stock, and profit margins would be smaller.

Clockworkprincess - hotpants!! sorry but thats made me laugh Grin Grin

MinorArcana · 18/04/2020 17:08

YANBU, if you weren’t allowed to buy them they’d have been taken off the shelves or cordoned off.

What a nasty judgemental comment.

Most people will have gone in for weekly shopping, which usually takes a while anyway.
But I buy clothes faster than my ex MIL buys groceries.
Even with about £200 of cheapish clothes on top, I'd have been out of Tesco faster than she would. Grin

Peppafrig · 18/04/2020 18:13

@MissHoskins not nasty in the slightest. But yes if there is a an hour long queue outside and you are browsing clothes for an hour while I stand outside in the rain yes I will judge.
