To have bought some clothes from Tesco to cheer myself up?

Went to Tesco this morning to do the food shopping, it's the first time I've been out other than going to work in two weeks. Whilst I was there I thought I'd grab myself some clothes because with all this warm weather we've had I don't own any summer clothes and sandals. I picked up quite a bit (£180 worth) for myself and got a couple of dresses for DD's aswell. People were giving me some right weird looks and the lady behind me at the check out kept tutting. The cashier was admiring the clothes and saying that she needed to grab some bits for her Dd before she left work today. Aibu to think there's nothing wrong with picking up other essentials while your already there anyway? Aren't clothes essentials? I haven't ordered anything online since this all started because I don't want to add pressure to delivery drivers. I'm a key worker myself (royal mail) and know how worrying it is to still be working under these circumstances. After years of being a stay at home mum in a financially abusive relationship, buying clothes makes me happy because for years I've had nothing. Buying those bits today has really lifted my mood aibu?

Peppafrig - who made you the queen of shopping?

bloodywhitecat · 18/04/2020 18:22

Lots of us who foster are on standby to take extra children in these stressful times, the likelihood is those children will arrive possessing only the clothes they stand up in so we may well go shopping for clothes alone. It will be interesting to see if we are judged on our shopping basket full of clothes and nothing else.

ilovesooty · 18/04/2020 18:33

If they're selling it you can buy it.

She must have gutted, huffed and puffed very loudly if you were aware of it at a two metre distance. Did you not say anything at all ?

ilovesooty · 18/04/2020 18:33

Tutted not gutted of course.

Peppafrig · 18/04/2020 18:38

@BirdieFriendReturns having courtesy and manners does not make me queen of shopping.

Widowodiw · 18/04/2020 18:40

Places like the range and pound stretcher are allowed to open because they sell pet supplies and a little food/ cleaning products. It’s not even 20% of their floor space. Most people are not buying these essential products they are buying garden/ home wares and travelling there specifically to do so. Personally this winds me up as I work for a homewares business and we have had to shut. If it’s available to buy then people will buy so nothing wrong with buying clothes from a supermarket whilst doing your shop.

Difficultcustomer · 18/04/2020 18:44

Enjoy your clothes OP. Yanbu to buy them. The tutting might have been just taking a while for it to go through the till and would have been worked up about a big food shop, or they thought it took longer when she was admiring the clothes.

Were people int the queues keeping correct distance- could she have been annoyed at the person behind?

Never mind put it behind you and enjoy the clothes.

BirdieFriendReturns · 18/04/2020 18:45

@ Peppafrig okay well you carry on standing outside being annoyed then, it won’t change anything.

MissHoskins · 18/04/2020 18:48

@Peppafrig
You're a fool and a very judgemental fool. You appear to suggest that if people are waiting outside for food then the op shouldn't go and buy clothes.
Please explain how that will work? Should op ask everyone in the queue what they intend to buy and if it's essential then she should wait.

Peppafrig · 18/04/2020 18:59

@MissHoskins I would rather be a judgmental fool than a selfish twat picking up a summer wardrobe while others can't get in to buy some food.

mumsonthenet · 18/04/2020 19:34

I wish our supermarkets had clothing
If you need it or want it and can afford it buy it! No ones business.

Corneliusmurphy · 18/04/2020 20:00

I had to buy jeans as all this bloody isolating has made my other pairs mysteriously shrink...

anywho this whole situation seems to have divided people into group a) surviving off toilet roll, nhs claps and smugness b) bbqs and hot tub folk and c) somewhere in between. Or it may just mean I should come off Facebook...

Theweasleytwins · 18/04/2020 20:05

Is this just a way to stealth brag about how gorgeous you look in that outfit? And how tidy your room is😋

MissHoskins · 18/04/2020 20:08

@Peppafrig
You said it, you've called it right you judgemental busybody

MissHoskins · 18/04/2020 20:09

@Peppafrig
I'm not the only one that thinks you are being unpleasant

Flibbitygibbit · 18/04/2020 20:10

Ooh I have this too Op ! Love it !

Gibbus · 18/04/2020 20:13

My local Asda has cordoned off their clothes section. It's really annoying because I need a new bra and they're the only ones that fit comfortably Sad

Krisskrosskiss · 18/04/2020 20:14

YANBU you did your regular shopping as well so it's not like you went out the house twice... and you will need summer clothes... some people have gotten totally mad about this lockdown like it's all a punishment from god and if we dont sit in our house in the dark crying then god will kill us all...
You've done nothing wrong... you've followed the guidelines which say you can pick up luxuries along with your essential shop. This may be going on a long time and a lot of people will need to buy summer clothing particularly for kids.

RingtheBells · 18/04/2020 20:31

It all harps back to the old days when people thought it was their fault that the plague came upon them and they had to punish themselves by self flagellating. Nowadays it’s no new clothes and no paint!

Floatyboat · 18/04/2020 20:39

£180 is excessive and more than what anyone could really class as essential. We do have pleasant weather every year so can't believe you had no suitable clothes. This is clearly indulgence rather than necessity and unfair on anyone waiting outside to buy food.

For the record, buying some clothes is fine, but this is too much.

Peppafrig · 18/04/2020 20:44

@Gibbus mine too because people like the OP couldn't just go in to the clothes department and buy what they need they use it as in excuse to take the piss.

Burnbabyburn1 · 18/04/2020 20:50

They are just jealous haha

PurpleDaisies · 18/04/2020 20:52

Who made you the judge of that floaty?

Floatyboat · 18/04/2020 20:55

@purple

Sorry, kind of thought the whole point of this forum was to express our opinion? I don't thing I know anyone who thinks dropping £180 on supermarket clothes for themselves is in any way reasonable. Regardless of covid19.

Bottomplasters · 18/04/2020 20:59

@paradisefalls please show us what you got. I need some new clothes. I got a lovely denim dress from Asda the other day and boyfriend jeans. I'll post pics
