I know it's only some Americans. I know that it's a massive country with many many more people than the UK

But these scenes are astounding. People flocking to beaches. Protesting about lockdown.
Protesting with guns about lockdown

You just can't imagine these scenes in the UK at the moment.
Especially not the Ohio Zombie picture

It just amazes me - sometimes you think we are very similar to the USA, and then many times, you realise we are completely different.

You might find this helpful, Annamaria:
www.archives.gov/founding-docs/constitution

The purpose of the Constitution is to provide an overall framework for governance, but it's supplemented by the Bill Of Rights and the various amendments which have followed, all of which allow for change where change is deemed necessary

BTW the Declaration of Independence is worth a read too ...

TheClaws · 21/04/2020 12:14

One @ on a thread is fine. Continual is annoying. Just don’t do it. All you need to do is bold a poster’s name.

bellinisurge · 21/04/2020 12:14

You could argue that we don't need a monarchy just because we've had one for hundreds of years. The USA is not that old.

chomalungma · 21/04/2020 12:17

The USA is not that old

I know - and it's quite interesting - as has been shown on this thread - to see the very real differences between this Western democracy and other Western democracies

I wonder which Western democracy the UK resembles most with general attitudes and culture?

Now that's a good thread

@TheClaws......Not a conspiracy theory but what I've experienced personally. Its really hard to accept that particular case being Covid related when people were waiting for him to die. He hadn't been receiving any kind of nutrition, not defecating or urinating. Basically just handeling his pain and checking of he was alive every 30 minutes. That makes absolutely no sense to me. Then when they told me that my Covid was going to be reported for my state when I hadn't even been home in almost a month and they new exactly where I was exposed at? Yeah thats just wrong. Thats scaremongering in its finest

chomalungma · 21/04/2020 12:22

Should you really be discussing the care of a dying patient in a nursing home? Unless you've changed some of the details?

OP posts:
Leaannb · 21/04/2020 12:23

@TheClaws Basicallly if you test positive right no and die you are dying of Covid even if you are waiting to die for another disease

Leaannb · 21/04/2020 12:25

@Chomalungma....HIPAA doesn't carry on past time of death and this particular nursing home and its many cases and its many deaths has been heavily reported by American journalisim

chomalungma · 21/04/2020 12:29

HIPAA doesn't carry on past time of death and this particular nursing home and its many cases and its many deaths has been heavily reported by American journalisim

Still doesn't seem right to discuss someone's death and what they went through on a public forum. I guess it also identifies you as well

OP posts:
Leaannb · 21/04/2020 12:33

@TheClaws...We can't bold on cell

TheClaws · 21/04/2020 12:34

Leaannb I would rather you didn’t @ me either, thanks.

Basicallly if you test positive right no and die you are dying of Covid even if you are waiting to die for another disease

Yes? And I’m not going to comment on your other nonsense, apart from the fact that, if true, the poor man sounded extremely ill and contracting COVID on top of that would have been the last straw. You aren’t coming off very well here.

Leaannb · 21/04/2020 12:34

@Chomalungma....So far every article that mentions that particular case also mentions that 1 hospital employee who contracted so yes that would be me

TheClaws · 21/04/2020 12:35

I still would prefer you didn’t .@. me.

TheClaws · 21/04/2020 12:38

This story is getting better and better. Article ...

Annamaria14 · 21/04/2020 13:40

@bellinisurge I absolutely agree. We do not need a monarchy. Another old fashioned ridiculous institution

Annamaria14 · 21/04/2020 13:41

@TheClaws what is the deal with you being bothered by @. Are you getting alot of notifications!?

chomalungma · 21/04/2020 13:44

If someone says they don't want to be @, why would you do that?

OP posts:
SenecaFallsRedux · 21/04/2020 13:45

What I don't understand about the constitution is - why are people sticking rigidly to something that was written hundreds of years ago.

Well, first of all, it is law. Second of all, it's not rigid. It does not just exist as a bit of paper written two hundred years ago, but it is a body of law developed over than time and whose development is ongoing. The interpretations of the Constitution by various courts, but most importantly, by the Supreme Court have been a means of adapting the original document to changing times.

Annamaria14 · 21/04/2020 15:29

@chomalungma because I have been on mumsnet for five years, and I have never seen anyone request not to be @ ed. Ever.

So I think it is a strange request. Why wouldn't you @ some one when we reply to them. Does she not want us to reply to her at all? Then why is she on here

Annamaria14 · 21/04/2020 15:30

@SenecaFallsRedux My point is -

I lived in Ireland for many years and no one talked about their constitution.

I went to the UsA and people talked to me about their constitution alot. They are obessed with it. They get children to recite the pledge of allegiance EVERY day in school.

Why?

chomalungma · 21/04/2020 15:32

So I think it is a strange request

So she has still asked not to be @ and then you go ahead and @ her.

When she has been asked not to.
I mean, that's an AIBU in itself.

OP posts:
Annamaria14 · 21/04/2020 15:33

@chomalungman because I am posting within the guidelines of this forum. Her request is a ridiculous one

Oliversmumsarmy · 21/04/2020 15:33

I absolutely agree. We do not need a monarchy. Another old fashioned ridiculous institution

So you would prefer Boris to be Supreme Leader.

Annamaria14

You seem to be suggesting in your posts that we get rid of anything old fashioned and dated.

What exactly would you bring in.

You want the people to be more powerful but don’t suggest how they can be?

You want to get rid of the monarchy just because you seem it old fashioned.

You want to tear up laws that have been in place for hundreds of years because they are too old.

If we said all the old laws didn’t apply what exact new modern laws would be brought in to keep the peace. Given the laws on murder and theft would no longer be valid as they were just too old fashioned

Annamaria14 · 21/04/2020 15:36

@oliversmumsarmy

I will add to that:

I don't like Boris Johnson either.

I could summarise in that - I don't like elite people ruling over the rest of us all. That is a corrupt system.

Yes, I want people to stand in their own power more, but we all need to work out a way together.

How can we evolve from this system of government (meaning to govern over) - to the next step?

chomalungma · 21/04/2020 15:37

because I am posting within the guidelines of this forum. Her request is a ridiculous one

But she asked not to be @

No matter if you think it's ridiculous, it's generally polite to follow someone's request.
