Fed up of all this nhs heroes worshipping

Those working in care homes are amazing. ITU nurses, doctors, administrators, cleaners, porters are incredible. I’ve always thought this pandemic or not. All staff on CV wards I truly admire. And all nhs staff supporting these individuals are brilliant. But heroes? They’re jobs are always admirable pandemic or not. And all others working for the nhs I’m sure there is the odd ‘hero’ amongst them that stand out. But all this mass hero worshipping is now getting on my nerves. Like my neighbour who is currently not doing anything related to CV who films himself during the Thursday clap and personally thanks people on FB. I’m sure there are plenty of true Heroes currently working for the nhs, but to attach that label to all of them is starting to grate now.

I agree with you, OP. I don't care so much about the clapping, I don't participate but this abject worshipping isn't doing anything other than to whip up the public into a frenzy of taking leave of their senses. It has everything to do with what the public wants, ie. sharing on social media and nothing at all to do with providing what NHS staff actually need.

Have the targets for providing meals or PPE for them been met yet? No? Didn't ever think they would be. It's not 'look at me' worthy so... that's not going to get done.

It's hugely divisive this issue of hero-worshipping. There are those that don't and won't - and those that always will because they are sheeple. The sheeple are the same dolts who abuse an mistreat staff (NHS or otherwise) every other day of the year when said staff aren't being celebrated.

I want ALL staff doing their jobs - in ALL service sectors - to be shown respect. Not adulation. What are they expected to do with that?

ohdannyboy · 18/04/2020 14:42

Yes there are plenty of hero's, and we should clap them all -many are going above and beyond, as for clapping - my street does it every Thursday - but I agree filming it for 'likes' on Facebook or Istagram is doing it for the wrong reason.
I clap for the supermarket shelf stackers, cashiers, cleaners, posties, bus drivers ........Perhaps we should clap for these guys too - CV hanging over us is horrid and those on the front-line customer facing are worthy of note too,

I see your point OP

BirdieFriendReturns · 18/04/2020 14:44

There are many key workers from all industries doing a sterling job.

I’ve also met quite a few nurses and midwives who are sadistic. In particular, a midwife who was involved in a negligence claim against the NHS. I can think of a couple of GPs who have been very indifferent against me resulting in conditions going untreated.

I'm a doctor. I don't work in ITU. I work on covid wards full time now. So I'm not entitled to PPE. I get a teeny tiny apron and a basic mask and gloves. I get coughed on daily. I lived with my baby DD and DP but the chance of me passing on covid was too high, so I've moved out. I miss them so much I cry nearly everyday.

I'm lonely, it's been 3 weeks and I hate living in this hotel. I work 12 hour shifts and just come back and sleep and go back again. I sit with people as they die (as do the nurses and CSWs who are all fabulous and heroes in my eyes), listen to those who know they haven't got long left and do my best every single day but we're losing. A nurse died last week on my watch and they were young. Really shouldn't have happened but such is covid.

I'm not a hero but to say I'm lucky because I'll still likely have a job at the end of this is insulting. I don't feel lucky right now but I would if I could sit on my bum at home surrounded by healthy family members.

What we're doing as doctors right now is nothing like we've ever done before. We have no means of treatment for covid patients so we have hundreds, literally hundreds of people dying on our wards everyday. I've lost colleagues to the virus, who weren't ever adequately protected, because PHE say we don't need PPE when treating covid +ve patients.

I don't think you have any idea what hospitals are like currently for frontline staff op, we're being sent to war with no protection and we all just await the virus and pray it doesn't turn nasty.

BirdieFriendReturns · 18/04/2020 14:54

Considering my NHS maternity experience caused my baby to die and a midwife screamed at me to “shut the fuck up” and refused me pain relief, you’ll forgive me if i don’t clap.

There’s many threads on here about the awful, life changing experiences of women in labour and afterwards.

Lemonblast · 18/04/2020 14:55

Running you really have cheered me up. Your narkiness at being called out is a joy to behold. My hero Grin

DdraigGoch · 18/04/2020 14:59

Stay at home, it's all you need to do as far as we are concerned

I’m going out once a fortnight to shop, nothing else. I can’t really do much more staying home than that!

I’m also following the directions that online slots should be left for customers who need them and shopping in store where possible.

@MarieQueenofScots glad to hear it. We ask for no more. If only everyone listened.

Twattersphere · 18/04/2020 14:59

I work for the NHS, but am not frontline acute, I am in a community setting. I keep it quiet that I work for the NHS as the effusive hero worshipping and offers of discounts/freebies/queue jumping is embarrassing. I regard myself fortunate that I am able to continue to work and receive a full monthly wage.

What I find objectionable and cringe worthy is people posting of selfies of themselves in ppe on Facebook, the ones I have seen who I know are similar to me and don’t go anywhere near an acute setting, it is all for gathering likes and the “oh you’re so brave hun”. There is a repeat offender locally who is a midwife in a local birthing centre who posts endless pictures of herself in ppe, statuses such as “can someone record the clapping for me as I am working tonight” along with a picture of her uniform hanging up. I feel embarrassed for her.

Twattersphere · 18/04/2020 15:01

*I meant I find NHS workers who I know are not working directly on the covid wards posting picture of themselves in PPE in Facebook objectionable.

I wish people would just show their appreciation and not make a big thing of it and show their appreciation all the time. If you do something and then make a big thing of it, you're doing it for the praise that you're going to get. How many of those clapping will be making about the NHS when this has all passed.

Our village comes out to clap and then congratulate themselves and each other on the community facebook page for doing a great job. Cringeworthy doesn't even begin to cover it.

These are mostly people who vote for the party that intends to dismantle the NHS and is currently chronically underfunding it.

I appreciate those who work for the NHS as much now as I ever did. I think those who go above and beyond are heroes and there are an awful doing that right now. However, it's very easy to jump on the bandwagon, stand outside and congratulate your neighbours on putting on a great show every Thursday evening and then go back to voting for lower taxes and turning up at A&E inappropriately, complaining about waiting times, once this is all over.

I have no confidence that our NHS will be any more appreciated than it was before Covid 19 arrived once most people stop worrying that they're going to die a horrible death due to limited NHS staff and resources.

LockdownLucy · 18/04/2020 15:10

I thought there were rules about posting pictures of yourself in uniform and ppe. My brother sent us a picture of his but said don't put it on Facebook or he'd get in trouble. Obv a nurse in civvies in Tesco car park having a rant is out of hospitals hands although in sure they take a dim view of that too.

Lemonblast · 18/04/2020 15:14

Identifying or made up? If I was a betting man....
Let’s hope the Mail haven’t already taken a screen shot of your post Wink

Twattersphere · 18/04/2020 15:14

@lockdownLucy
They are everywhere on my Facebook! Some obviously taken at work.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 18/04/2020 15:20

in which case absolutely every member of ward staff in every ward in the really big teaching hospital local to me will be getting their cards then 😁

Presume it differs depending on where you are and what your managers are like! Or maybe he just doesn't want my mum going mad and bragging about it to all her mates Grin

Whywhywhynow · 18/04/2020 15:30

I think I get you OP. The NHS workers are heroes and what they’re doing is gruelling and I have respect for them that I can’t describe. BUT, it’s the weird worshipping that’s gone a bit bonkers. They’re being made into some holy beings incapable of wrong and that isn’t useful at all.
I clap for them but also what I v really want for them (and all other underpaid/undervalued workers) is a proper wage and to be supported by the government with enough funding to do their jobs safely. I don’t know how to go about trying to help the changes come about but when I know, I’ll get involved.

bobstersmum · 18/04/2020 15:34

I have worked for the NHS in a hard job, in a secure hospital. I was scared going to work. But if I was working on a covid ward while all of this is going on I would be terrified. So I do think they are heroes.

LagunaBubbles · 18/04/2020 15:34

Didn't take long for a nasty under current to surface amongst some people. Same as awful thread moaning about possibility Captain Tom getting a Knighthood.

Hagisonthehill · 18/04/2020 15:40

You can expect the numbers of NHS staff Covid cases to go up as our ppe is being reduced in some areas as stocks run low.
I work wearing a gown,apron,ffp3 mask and gloves. The talk of reusing is scarry. We are protected in this heat and taking it off and disposing of it is one of the riskiest bits as the chances of contamination are high after we've been in them for hours looking after ventilated patients and those on cppap machines. We are already cutting breaks to save changing them.(so one break per 13 hours).
On the Covid wards the aprons are so flimsy they are really only for show and the same size has to fit from the smallest to the tallest, largest of staff(male and female).Face masks which we know offer little protection and practically non if worn for a full shift.
I haven't seen many discounts I can use, have to wait in supermarket queues with everyone else.(no mistakes with lanyards as clinical staff don't wear them ,infection control)And as for free food, meals I did get a small Easter egg and a bag of crisps, which I enjoyed thank you.But that's it.
But like many in the NHS I'm just putting one foot in front of the other, feeling it's inevitable I get it and hope like most of us that being female, good immune system trained looking after DD with all her early school year bugs are up to it.Age slightly against me but you can't have everything..
Also secure in the knowledge that all this thanks and gratitude will disappear when Covid starts to ease and were berated for all the delayed treatments and operations building behind it up everyday.

sneakythecat71 · 18/04/2020 15:40

@BirdieFriendReturns really?

namechangegamechange2 · 18/04/2020 15:42

That's terrible @BirdieFriendReturns I hope she was sacked !
