Fed up of all this nhs heroes worshipping

Those working in care homes are amazing. ITU nurses, doctors, administrators, cleaners, porters are incredible. I’ve always thought this pandemic or not. All staff on CV wards I truly admire. And all nhs staff supporting these individuals are brilliant. But heroes? They’re jobs are always admirable pandemic or not. And all others working for the nhs I’m sure there is the odd ‘hero’ amongst them that stand out. But all this mass hero worshipping is now getting on my nerves. Like my neighbour who is currently not doing anything related to CV who films himself during the Thursday clap and personally thanks people on FB. I’m sure there are plenty of true Heroes currently working for the nhs, but to attach that label to all of them is starting to grate now.

I think the companies who are offering the discounts are well aware most won't use them. It looks good on the webpage though doesn't it?

MonsteraCheeseplant · 18/04/2020 11:13

Actually I just read that at least 56 health care workers in the NHS have died from Covid. My colleagues are scared. But they turn up. So yeah, while I find the open displays a bit cringe, they're completely justified.

lockdowngrinch · 18/04/2020 11:14

I’ve said many are absolute heroes, just not everyone currently employed by the nhs.
I think supermarket staff, bin men posties, bus/tube/train drivers are also fabulous.

Ok - what have you done to thank them?

WhyCantIThinkOfAGoodOne · 18/04/2020 11:16

Lots of people working in COVID wards might end up with PTSD from the strain of their job. I'm happy for them to get all the recognition they're currently getting and more. I can't imagine concerning myself about these people getting too much gratitude.

WhyCantIThinkOfAGoodOne · 18/04/2020 11:16

Other people are also doing great work too - why not recognise these people too rather than stop recognising NHS workers.

thekewgirl · 18/04/2020 11:17

The OPs point I believe is that not everyone is necessarily a hero in all the one million or so people employed by the NHS. Of course people who put their lives in danger (no matter what profession) to protect or treat others deserve respect and a suitable wage to support their choice to be in that profession. But that should be commonplace and part of being in a civilised society. We've gone from one extreme to another

lockdowngrinch · 18/04/2020 11:19

@MarieQueenofScots I recently bought a man working the till at my supermarket a nice bottle of wine. Same for my bin men. Why? What do you do?

OP posts:
edwinbear · 18/04/2020 11:19

I’m with you OP. They are doing a fantastic job in awful times, but they will also emerge out of this with a job, which many, many other people won’t.

Hannah021 · 18/04/2020 11:20

@lockdowngrinch just because the nhs is getting far overdue gratitude doesnt mean other professions arent heros too... It isnt mutually exclusive except in the empty heads of FB scrollers with nothing todo like urself, perhaps.

you could have written a post that says, how about we say thank you to drivers, firefighters, police, etc cuz they are doing great job keeping the country rolling.. But surely ur negative self started by looking at whats on the nhs plate and fighting over crumbs of overdue gratitude. Get urself a job and quit FB

OneandTwenty · 18/04/2020 11:20

you are a step away from the "they're paid for it, who cares" usually reserved to policeman or soldiers.

What a nasty attitude some people have.

AuntyClockWise · 18/04/2020 11:21

Every single NHS employee right now is doing their part in this pandemic.

The admin staff in payroll are paying the docs and nurses (you think they'd work for free?)

The domestic staff are ensuring the hospital is clean and preventing spread of other community acquired infections.

Other non frontline clinical staff are helping the flow of patients to free up beds for CV patients.

Those NHS employees in non essential roles are being redployed to help in some way with the pandemic.

Right now, the NHS are running restricted services to focus on the CV pandemic.

Every single NHS employee are helping in some way to reduce the impact of this pandemic. Lots are redployed to roles that they didn't originally sign up for.

I don't like calling anyone heroes because no one is doing it out the kindness of their hearts. If they weren't guaranteed a wage at the end of the month, they wouldn't be going into work and placing themselves at risk. However you are being extremely unreasonable to think only those working directly with CV patients deserve recognition in this challenging time. Every NHS employee has a valuable role at present.

MarieQueenofScots · 18/04/2020 11:21

Same for my bin men. Why? What do you do?

Absolutely the same - bought stuff for the supermarket staff room including hand gel, cream and treats etc. Left similar out for bin men.

See? It is possible to consider everyone. Not sure then, the point of your post (although I can hazard a guess)

OneandTwenty · 18/04/2020 11:21

oh, we get it now. YOU are a hero and you have done your bit. Someone give lockdowngrinch a medal .Make it a knighthood.

Tootletum · 18/04/2020 11:22

Agree OP.

lockdowngrinch · 18/04/2020 11:23

@Hannah021 I’ve got a jobConfused

@oneandtwenty - OP was only answering a question. She wasn't bragging about her generosity

mamabears3 · 18/04/2020 11:25

i am an nhs nurse
a single mum
mum to disabled adopted child
birth mum of 2
carer for disabled family
i work 13 hour shifts without a break to eat or drink so that my patients needs are met
i havent had a pay rise in years
i pay to park at the hospital
my take home wage is appallingly low for the work i do
my job is gruelling, fleas, nits, blood, vomit, faeces, violence, abuse
currently we are running out of protective equipment whilst caring for people dying of a highly infectious brand new disease

am i a hero?

no!

do i deserve respect and perhaps a thank you

probably. but i dont expect it and certainly wouldnt want anyone feeling obliged or distressed by the curent situation.

if you want to thank a nurse, doctor, cook, cleaner, postman, postlady, delivery driver...do it ! im sure it will make their day !

if you dont want to. dont.

its quite simple!

whatever you feel, dont feel, say or dont say i for one will keep caring for my patients, using my high level training and skills, putting their and their families needs first.

Nursing is my job...people are my life x

blessings, i hope you find peace in your current distress

Lemonblast · 18/04/2020 11:26

Don’t worry OP. The public will soon forget.
As soon as we stop being heroes we’ll be back where we belong. Still holding the hands of the dying and cleaning up bodily fluids to preserve the dignity of our patients. But we won’t be getting free takeaways or worrying about carrying a killer virus home to our babies so life will be peachy again Wink

lovelydream · 18/04/2020 11:26

I think they are doing amazing work of course during this time and absolutely deserve our support....BUT I am uncomfortable with the 10% discount being offered by a few supermarkets for ANYONE with an NHS card - given that they aren't experiencing any financial hardship via being on furlough/lost their jobs and aren't likely to even if we go through a recession and the fact that many/most are not involved in front line virus victim care

madcatladyforever · 18/04/2020 11:27

I'm not a hero. I knew what I was taking on when I started working for the NHS.
I've worked for private companies as well and chose the NHS because I was sick of always getting made redundant, 6 times at the last count before training for my current job.
I'm one of the lucky ones, I get to go to work everyday and I'm not trapped in a tiny flat with three kids for months on end, I get a comfortable salary every single month which pays my mortgage and NHS pension - there are people out there who will have lost everything by the time this ends and will be homeless with no job.
People outside hospitals are just as likely to die as those working inside hospitals.
When I look around at the carnage this situation is causing with the economy I'm thinking us NHS staff should be out there clapping for the people who have lost homes and businesses and have nothing left.
I count myself very lucky.

lockdowngrinch · 18/04/2020 11:28

@OneandTwenty I was simply answering a question on here. Not told anyone IRL.

OP posts:
derxa · 18/04/2020 11:29

Still treating patients despite inadequate ppe and multiple deaths of healthcare workers? Of course they are fucking heroes OP. I agree. It's horrific. I think the media are fuelling this though because they've nothing else to talk about. As a side note I wish there were fewer reporters running around the country interviewing people. They're like Typhoid Mary

lovelydream · 18/04/2020 11:29

@madcatladyforever

I absolutely agree with your whole post x

Destroyer · 18/04/2020 11:30

Bus/ transport drivers and cleaners with no PPE are the unsung 'heroes' (hate the 'hero' word as well).
