Am I being mean?

So its DH birthday in 2 weeks. He wants to spend £380 on a present himself (watch).

I think this is way too much, am I being unreasonable?

We 'could' afford it, although after lockdown ends we need lots of urgent jobs need doing in the house.

Also i am still feeling abit miffed he didn't get me anything for mothers day...due to CV...but he went shopping twice a few days before.

What did you get for your birthday?

73Sunglasslover · 17/04/2020 18:12

I think it depends on how easily you can afford it TBH. If by 'could' you mean "we'd only have 10k left in savings" that's quite different than if you mean "by adding to the credit card debt" (though some people are more comfortable with debt than I)

NotInTheMorning · 17/04/2020 18:12

Honestly it depends on so many factors, not least your financial situation, and whether you would be able to spend a similar sum on a present for yourself.

Rollercoasteride · 17/04/2020 18:13

He got me a bottle of wine and chocolates I think...to be fair we didn't have alot of money at the time for my birthday

Rollercoasteride · 17/04/2020 18:15

We dont really have savings, plus I have a credit card bill too

OP posts:
MorganKitten · 17/04/2020 18:16

Is it his money, if so what’s the issue?

Windyatthebeach · 17/04/2020 18:16

He is a cf imo.
Chocolates and wine - did you share??
Versus a watch!!
What a selfish git.

Dishwashersaurous · 17/04/2020 18:17

Is it coming out of his money or the family pot? You should both have money that you can spend on yourself

MummBraTheEverLeaking · 17/04/2020 18:17

Wine and choc for you and a £380 watch for him?!? Has he no shame?

frazzledasarock · 17/04/2020 18:19

Use the money to pay off your credit card bill.

Why do you have a debt and he has money to burn?

Rollercoasteride · 17/04/2020 18:20

All our money goes into a joint account. Yes I did share the chocolates with DS too!

CrazyTimesAreOccurring · 17/04/2020 18:20

Have your circumstances changed so much between your birthdays that you got wine and chocs for yours and he gets a £380 watch Shock

Merryoldgoat · 17/04/2020 18:21

These fucking men.

BackseatCookers · 17/04/2020 18:21

Have you not just spoken this through with him? Does he know you have an issue with it? What's his response?

Rollercoasteride · 17/04/2020 18:23

We were living beyond our means for years, both of us not extravagant etc. Just general living. But we have had a change of circumstances in January, so all debts will cleared by the end of the year, plus we have more monthly income.

OP posts:
Dishwashersaurous · 17/04/2020 18:23

So have your circumstances substantially improved to allow a 20x increase in the present value. Unless it was a really nice bottle of wine

Rollercoasteride · 17/04/2020 18:24

Yes our circumstances have changed since my birthday. He does know, he said he could tell by my face!

OP posts:
rainbow1982 · 17/04/2020 18:25

No it's not on! Tell him not to be a greedy guzzle guts and get his watch if u can still afford it after the jobs. Also remind him about the chocolate and wine! 👊🏼👊🏼

CalleighDoodle · 17/04/2020 18:25

How fucking expensive was that bottle of wine?!

He is obviously a cf.

Have you actually sat down calmly and pointed out the massive discrepancy in the birthday gifts and asked for a resolution?

Rollercoasteride · 17/04/2020 18:26

Ha, I went to Tesco the following week it was £20 bottle of wine

OP posts:
Rollercoasteride · 17/04/2020 18:26

He just got into a strop saying he wouldn't have anything then lol

OP posts:
CalleighDoodle · 17/04/2020 18:28

And id be wary of him wanting to spend so extravagantly so soon after being in a difficult financial position. He will have that money spent in no time.

Is it an inheritance?

CalleighDoodle · 17/04/2020 18:28

He just got into a strop saying he wouldn't have anything then lol

Say thank god he was joking about the watch! You were beginning to think he was a selfish dick!

Umnoway · 17/04/2020 18:30

Unless you’re allowed to purchase something for a similar amount then yeah, he’s being unfair. That’s way too much money for a watch, I’m amazed people still bother with them nowadays tbh.

Rollercoasteride · 17/04/2020 18:32

We took out a massive loan for lvf, so just finished paying that off, plus we both had really good pay rises
