Just dreaming where we could book for a holiday for next year. Ideally very cheap with lots of mountains.

Any ideas gratefully received!

Wales camping

Scotland camping

Drive to the Alps, to go camping!

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 17/04/2020 16:56

I hear northern Italy is very popular.

FluffyGoalXXXDX · 17/04/2020 16:58

Easyjet have cheap flights to innsbruck and Geneva in the summer especially midweek flights. We hired a car and booked airbnbs, we did this last year and had booked for this year but probably wont be going now. A lot of places have free or cheap 'summer cards' which give free access to cable cars and outdoor pools. There is loads of stuff for kids to do. We went to Serfaus in Austria last year and had booked for Mayrhofen this year, both in Austria.

not sure of a specific place but it might be worth looking at places around snowdonia in wales?

billybagpuss · 17/04/2020 17:01

Annecy we did Euro camp there, access to lake, great walks in alps, easy drive to chamonix Our kids still rave about the holiday several years on.

tttigress · 17/04/2020 17:04

Slovenia?

LongPauseNoReply · 17/04/2020 17:08

I hear northern Italy is very popular I really fucking hope you actually mean that. Angry

ShinyMe · 17/04/2020 17:14

What sort of mountains? Little ones you can trundle up in a comfortable walk in a day? Bigger ones with some challenging walks? Rocky ones with climbing? Great big ones with ice climbing? Pretty ones to look at and go up in the odd cable car?

We loved Crete. We had a lovely holiday in the mountains there, amongst the olive groves. Sigh. Really hoping we get the chance to go back while we're still young enough to enjoy it....though we also love Scotland and Wales. And don't discount Northern Ireland - okay, it doesn't have many mountains, but it's undiscovered, it's generally not overcrowded in the slightest, the people are so hospitable to tourists (honestly, you'd be surprised if you've not been there before, especially round the North Coast and Donegal), and the food is so, so fresh.

QueenRefusenik · 17/04/2020 17:15

Asturias, northern Spain. Coast, mountains, food... Got it all!

StCharlotte · 17/04/2020 17:15

I second Slovenia. Specifically Lake Bled or Lake Bonhinj.

BarbaraofSeville · 17/04/2020 17:17

Yes, northern Italy is very popular for summer mountain holidays, walking, mountain biking etc. Like the rest of the Alps, Italian Lake District, Garda, Como etc. Finale Ligure, the area just over the French border, is particularly popular with mountain bikers. Also city breaks in Milan, Venice and probably other places.

And yes, when we're all allowed to travel again, northern Italy will be somewhere where people should look to go, as they'll probably need the tourism business.

We stayed at a Eurocamp near Lake Annecy. Glorious scenery and wenr a drive through the mountains, saw Mont Blanc.

Went to the black forest last year, great value. Flights were £250 for a family of 4 in August on a midday flight. Mountains not massive but loved it.

chocolicious · 17/04/2020 17:28

Plenty of mountains in Scotland.Stunning scenery.

FluffyGoalXXXDX · 17/04/2020 17:44

Thanks for all these fantastic ideas!
@ShinyMe I was really thinking of somewhere with mountainous landscapes rather than us doing heavy duty rock climbing.

Near Loch Morlich? There is a gorgeous campsite up there. It’s right at the foot of the Cairngorms.

Patch23042 · 17/04/2020 18:34

I’d go for the Cairngorms or Snowdonia in the UK.

VivaLeBeaver · 17/04/2020 18:36

I was reading today about the mountains of northern Albania being nice for a holiday.

MrsTolerence · 17/04/2020 18:41

Have a look at Camping Jungfrau in Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland. You can drive there quite easily and camp. Or they have their own (quite basic) accommodation if you prefer to fly. Once there, the local trains and buses are great so you don’t really need a car. It’s a very reasonable price size, although Switzerland can be pricey for eating out. The most beautiful place I’ve ever been😍

Ylvamoon · 17/04/2020 18:41

Bavarian Alps ... or Lake Constance (German Side) with spectacular mountain backdrop! Holiday lets are responsible at around € 700-1200 for a week for 4 people...
