Just dreaming where we could book for a holiday for next year. Ideally very cheap with lots of mountains.

Any ideas gratefully received!

The Spanish Pyrenees. Or indeed the French ones.

Lake Bled and bohinj and surroundings are hugely over crowded in summer.
Have you thought about Jura region of Switzerland. It's not very touristic so quiet in summer, rolling rather than alpine and much cheaper than other parts. Have a look at Vallorbe. Otherwise the lac de serre poncon region of france is stunning. Or the pyrenees (never been but supposed to be lovely).

We've rented cabins in Chamonix and Merribel in the summer holidays, was cheap as out if their high season and loads of things to do for kids

Lago D'idro north of lake garda is also lovely and less touristy (cheaper) than garda or como. If you go for campsites they usually also have cheap accommodation.

Lakes in Italy france and Switzerland are much nicer than Bled or Bohinj in Slovenia.

Another vote for Austria, we usually go at least once a year (we’re in Southern Germany, so it’s a short drive away) in the warmer months, and I absolutely love it there.

Most Ski resorts are relatively cheap in summer. Camping options exist. The best bit about European ski resorts is that you can get the lift a good chunk of the way up the mountain, enjoy stunning views and then get the lift down again which is less tough on the knees/fitness etc.

We have really enjoyed northern Italy (Pozza di Fassa and Malga Ciapela), Austria (Mayrhofen and Hintertux - Hintertux has summer skiing on the glacier) and Les Deux Alpes, Annecy and Chamonix.

We have also enjoyed walking in Snowdonia and Scotland but love the variety of the Alps.

Have a look at the Tatra mountains in Poland, you can get there by bus from Krakow, beautiful and (relatively) cheap

Snowdonia hands down 🙌

Wales or Scotland, by public transport.

Austria? Ex husband and I - when first starting out together and poor - used to take 'lakes and mountains' holidays in Austria. Think ski resorts in summer! It was beautiful and cheap.

Hamsterriffic · 17/04/2020 22:41

Drive down to the alps and camp! Lots of ski resorts have campsites. We’ve done it a couple of times, really beautiful, hot sunny daytime, need a fleece in the evenings. Swimming pools, horse riding, walks, biking... and much cheese to be eaten! I’d recommend Lake Annnecy as a stop on the way to the mountains. You can do Switzerland, France and Italy on one holiday.... hmmm, I might go back too!
