Just dreaming where we could book for a holiday for next year. Ideally very cheap with lots of mountains.

Any ideas gratefully received!

Sierra Nevada area in Andalucia

Montenegro - Ryanair and EasyJet fly there and it's cheaper than Croatia (and nicer in my opinion). It is stunningly beautiful with mountains, beaches and lakes all squashed into this small country - and it's sunny !

Yes, Switzerland is lovely. I stayed just outside of Zermatt once and it was fab but doesn’t meet the brief of cheap! Grin

A friend went to the Julian Alps in.....Slovenia I think and had a great time.

FluffyGoalXXXDX · 17/04/2020 19:22

Such wonderful ideas. Thank you!

If you are looking for a mix of a cheap holiday, stunning walks combined with history then look at the Carpathian Mountains in Romania.

Romania does not feature on most people's radar because that country, like Poland, has been the target of anti-EU and its related xenophobia in the UK tabloid press. But don't allow that to put you off. The larger towns (always called 'cities') have all you need and the quality of broadband is far better than the UK. Most people there speak good English because that is spoken in schools throughout the day. The countryside is stunning but you need to engage with a quality tour guide to book your holiday. You will meet many other EU nationals holidaying there.

Picos de Europa in Spain

Unescorted · 17/04/2020 19:37

Avalanche - I keep meaning to go to Romania.

WitchQueenofDarkness · 17/04/2020 19:43

Snowdonia :)

This really appeals. The idea of clean mountain air. My parents loved Lake Como. I enjoy southern Spain but it’s so arid and I do crave a meadow

lastqueenofscotland · 17/04/2020 20:16

Tetras in Slovakia or Rilas in Bulgaria

symbioticpatriot · 17/04/2020 20:28

Dolomites (northern Italy) stunning at any time of year!

  • Zell am See / Saalbach in Austria. Easy to reach from Salzburg.
  • Zakopane in Poland - fly to Krakow and enjoy the old city there too.
  • Brasov in Romania - spooky place but not easy to get to unless on a package tour
  • Sofia in Bulgaria - mountains an hour away

I've been climbing on the via Ferrara in the dolomites which was amazing.
Last year we drove to the pyrenees and camped at luz st sauveur in the foothills. Stunning scenery and very accessible walks/bike trails/kayaking/road and mountain biking.

Havanananana · 17/04/2020 20:32

Malcesine on Lake Garda in Italy - lake, beach and mountains all in one place (or stay in Riva or Torbole on the lake and take a day trip to Malcesine and the Monte Baldo mountain).

blackteaplease · 17/04/2020 20:33

Another vote for the picos in Spain. Also amazing.

Mesmeri · 17/04/2020 20:33

Slovenia. We live in Lake Bled and have some cheap (but nice) apartments. DH is a mountain guide. I can help you to organise something if you want. PM me if you're interested in more information.

Perfidy · 17/04/2020 20:35

Slovenia, v reasonable, lake bohinj is beautiful.

And upthread picos de eoropa, fantastic scenery, v reasonable.

SunshineOutdoors · 17/04/2020 20:35

Zell Am See in Austria, as mentioned already, is fab for a holiday.

KC225 · 17/04/2020 20:36

Sweden - winter season EasyJet do flights from Bristol and Gatwick direct to Ostersund/Are, primarily for the ski season but lots of mountains and English is widely spoken

thanksamillion · 17/04/2020 20:36

I was coming to say Romania. Really beautiful, cheap food and drink and very friendly people.

vanillandhoney · 17/04/2020 20:38

Camping anywhere in Europe would be good.

Kitzbuhel in Austria is absolutely beautiful.

Nixen · 17/04/2020 20:41

Lake bled, Slovenia. It’s stunning!

crazydiamond222 · 17/04/2020 20:45

Nepal is amazing if you would consider somewhere further afield.

I also loved Lake Bled and Slovenia but we visited 20 years ago. I imagine it is quite busy now judging by the number of people rating it.

Mesmeri · 17/04/2020 20:55

45crazydiamond222 mid June til late September Bled is busy, the rest of the year it's really not... plus, most of the tourists stick to the town end of the lake, the castle and Vintgar gorge and Lake Bohinj .... and there is so much more to see if you know where to look!

Mesmeri · 17/04/2020 20:56

And of course, right now, it's a ghost town....
