Excruciating dental pain

12stepCAKE · 16/04/2020 19:27

Hello all. I have a broken tooth. It's broken in half. I'm in excruciating pain. I have already had one log of antibiotics and it didn't help. I have tried every potion and OTC medicine available. Nothing helps. I feel like I'm going crazy. We don't have a dental hub set up yet.

I really don't know what I'm asking but Amy advice please?

I am in so much pain I would pull it out myself (obviously not going to do that)

Thanks

Hi there, I too had half a tooth fall out a few days ago although I am not in huge pain.I would go to hospital, they have emergency dentists and are telling us all if you need help go.It sounds like you need it.

Embracelife · 16/04/2020 19:58

Look online for emergency dentist in your area or call 111

overandoverafail · 16/04/2020 19:58

Rinse with warm salty water for a minimum of 40 seconds every half hour, paying particular attention to area that's infected.

Keep your head elevated including when asleep, laying down will send all the blood to your head increasing the pain.

Remain still and calm as much as possible, pacing the room, going up and down stairs, basically any movement will increase your blood pressure therefore causing more pain.

Cold compresses on the outside of your face for 15 minutes every half an hour.

Keep on top of paracetamol. Speak with pharmacist they may have something stronger they can sell you.

Eat soft foods at room temperature nothing hot or cold or it will aggravate the area more.

Buy some Ashton and parsons teething granules, all major super markets and chemists stock them.

12stepCAKE · 16/04/2020 20:07

Thanks all. Not sure about a and e I don't think they will be too happy about it. My friends neighbour is a dentist and said I can call her tomorrow for advice so hoping she can advise something I haven't already tried or prescribe something stronger or a referral maybe? I would happily give birth another 5 times than deal with this!

If you can take ibuprofen you can alternate that with the paracetamol to help take the edge off.
Is the pain constant or does it worsen with hot and cold?

12stepCAKE · 16/04/2020 20:11

It's constant. The only thing that helps slightly is paracetamol and ibuprofen at the same time but it only works for about half an hour and only slightly

My brother had a tooth extraction yesterday. He had to wait in the car till it it was his turn. They gave him a surgical mask to wear going on and coming out.

seaofbleu · 16/04/2020 20:14

Have you tried placing a temporary dressing yourself?
Assuming your own dentist has advised already if you've been prescribed antibiotics.
Don't ring 111 or A& E unless you've got airway threatening or eye involvement swelling , there is nothing they can do-your own dentist is the key person. They alone do the e-referral to the dental hub not 111. The dental hub will be set up imminently I'm sure, so try not to despair.
The only treatment on offer there will be an extraction though so prepare yourself for that. There is no drilling at all in UCDs- we cannot do aerosol generating procedures atm.

caringdenise009 · 16/04/2020 20:16

Boots sell ibuprofen and codeine tablets, which you can take at the same time as paracetamol.

currentlychilled · 16/04/2020 20:18

I really sympathise with you. Here in Scotland we have upped the dose temporarily of some meds we can prescribe. But you'll need to speak to your dentist. Our protocol is that if you have tried two lots of antibiotics and still no relief then you get referred to the central hub. Surely there is one up and running now?

NeneValley · 16/04/2020 20:22

Anything with Lidocaine content.

Dentists use this for drilling and extractions.

You can buy on Amazon, or in chemists.

WhereDidMyEyebrowsGo · 16/04/2020 20:25

Sorry if you've already tried this but if you call your dentist they should provide contact details for an emergency/or what to do if you have a dental emergency on their answerphone.

My dentist is totally private, no NHS provision locally, so I appreciate that not all dental practices will provide this.

If you need to go to A&E do. Excruciating pain is enough - why is it different from having excruciating pain in any other part of your body? I once had a dental abscess that caused the entire right hand side of my face to swell up and which affected the sight in my right eye. My face was so swollen from the infection that I couldn't open my eye properly.

My dentist told me I should have gone to A&E. But NHS111, didn't think it important enough when I called them.

If you are in so much pain please go to A&E.

currentlychilled · 16/04/2020 20:27

Nenevalley, topical lidocaine would be useless.

12stepCAKE · 16/04/2020 20:35

Thank you all. The hubs aren't set up here yet. And have been told to just wait. I would be very happy with an extraction to be honest. Not far off pulling it out myself but ofcourse won't be doing that. Will speak to the dentist again tomorrow and see if they can refer me anywhere to get the blasted thing out. I took a bit too much paracetamol earlier so now feeling a bit rough. It helped the pain a little but won't be doing that again. Feel very desperate but not getting the answers I'm looking for locally which is understandable. More worried about it getting infected or worse because this pain is worse than before I had the antibiotics so wandered if it came back with a vengeance!

Difflam mouthwash is very good for dental pain. It contains an anaesthetic.

12stepCAKE · 16/04/2020 20:45

Thank you will look for that tomorrow

You can buy codeine online from a registered uk online pharmacy.. may help? You speak with a real doctor online.

I did this for a trapped nerve once, was worth it.

overandoverafail · 16/04/2020 20:51

Taking them at the same time will limit the amount of time they cover the pain for which is why it's normally recommended to alternate. So every few hours you are getting another pain relief.

Please do t try to place a temporary dressing as if the tooth is infected all you are doing is trapping the infection in. This is why I asked if the pain was constant. If it was inky with hot/cold then a dressing would be a good idea as is most likely nerve pain.

You can get co-codamol over the counter from pharmacies if the pain isn't easing and then stop the paracetamol and take the co codamol in its place.

12stepCAKE · 16/04/2020 20:51

Ooo ok thank you

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 16/04/2020 20:57

Do you have babybels? If you roll up the wax and soften in in your hands you can mold it and press it into the broken part of the tooth to form a temporary dressing. It might be the fact that the nerve is exposed to air that is causing the pain so this might relieve the pain enough for you to at least have a drink or something.
If all else fails go to pharmacy and ask for oil of cloves and apply with a cotton buds to the tooth ONLY. Do not get this stuff on your tongue because it tastes like giving satan himself a blowjob. But it works. I really feel for you and I hope you get it out soon.

Mrsmorton · 16/04/2020 20:59

Where are you OP? Would you be prepared to travel to a hub? Colleagues working in them report they're not "full" so someone could see you.

Areyoufree · 16/04/2020 21:07

I took a bit too much paracetamol earlier

Please be careful, OP. It’s very easy to overdose on paracetamol. You shouldn’t be having more than 8 in 24 hours. I really hope you get this sorted soon - it must be horrendous for you.

currentlychilled · 16/04/2020 21:10

Where are you OP? If you've taken too much paracetamol you should phone NHS24

Someonesayroadtrip · 16/04/2020 21:17

If you took too much paracetamol then call 111, so about the pain, such a crazy time, but call 111 as you have to be really careful with paracetamol and it's affects aren't always immediate.
