Excruciating dental pain

12stepCAKE · 16/04/2020 19:27

Hello all. I have a broken tooth. It's broken in half. I'm in excruciating pain. I have already had one log of antibiotics and it didn't help. I have tried every potion and OTC medicine available. Nothing helps. I feel like I'm going crazy. We don't have a dental hub set up yet.

I really don't know what I'm asking but Amy advice please?

I am in so much pain I would pull it out myself (obviously not going to do that)

Thanks

I feel so sorry for you. Im in the same boat. I have 2 broken teeth and one that needs specialist endodentistry and hurts too. The pain is so bad i feel like i want to die. The denists will do nothing. Its hell. I drug myself up so it knocks me out. I feel so so bad for you is all i can say. I k ow what you are going through. I breathe like labour pains and try and focus. Its so hard.

ponchek · 18/04/2020 14:10

You have to go to a and d or get a go referral to the dental section of the hospital.

I posted a ref to someone I know who's a surgeon and someone else said don't ask ransoms off the internet. He's no random but all his routine hospital work is on hold and he felt v bad for people like you guys so his sions did him a website so he can be someone a real dentist for people at least to talk to.

ponchek · 18/04/2020 14:10

Gp referral

ponchek · 18/04/2020 14:10

I know you don't want to go to a and e but really should

Walkingthedog46 · 18/04/2020 14:12

We called 111 and they made an appointment for my grandson at the local emergency dentist

Bearnecessity · 18/04/2020 14:19

Mrs M apologies I didn't mean actual Fuji I meant over the counter temporary filler that I have at home and I am now plucking up the courage to use.

Ponchek I tend to garner opinion from a variety of people about a lot of things but being quite an intelligent and free-thinking person I am able to think and make good judgements for myself although I am sure you were not implying I am a gullible, mindless, lemming leaping off the cliff.

Mrsmorton · 18/04/2020 14:25

@Bearnecessity Most likely to be a success if you can get the tooth as dry as possible. Make a small ball of cotton wool (make it dense as you don't want wispy bits getting in the way) and dab around the area with some tweezers to dry it as much as possible.

Roll the temp filling into a ball and push it into the hole/place wherever. Squidge it in hard then try to remove any excess. Bite down on it before it sets. You can tap it into place with a damp cotton wool ball but it's important to push it in hard to fill the hole without getting air trapped. Make sure you roll up the cotton wool into a dense ball the size of a pea.

You might need a few goes but be bold.

If the cavity isn't the right shape, it won't really hold as OTC temp fillings aren't sticky like Fuji is.

So difficult to do remotely!!

Sloth66 · 18/04/2020 14:27

I was told that dental PPE equipment was redirected to hospital ITU and A and E because of the serious nationwide shortage.
So now there is little in the way of emergency dental Treatment available in the community.

isabellerossignol · 18/04/2020 14:33

This makes my blood run cold. I had an abscess a few months ago and my face swelled up so badly that I was struggling to breathe. I ended up in A&E where I was told they only offer over the counter pain relief unless you are admitted as an inpatient, due to people misusing the system trying to obtain drugs. Hmm As if I would magically make my face swell up just to score a few codeine so that I could sell them outside. It took weeks and multiple courses of antibiotics for the infection to even subside enough for my dentist to be able to extract the tooth. My dentist was so lovely, and my GP did his very best with pain relief, but my goodness, the system for dealing with dental pain is absolutely barbaric.

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 18/04/2020 14:34

@ponchek and what is A&E going to do?

Absolute fuck all. A&E cant treat the tooth anymore than OP can. At most they might give one dose of painkillers, if your lucky 3 days. Generally though dental pain is touched no more by codeine than paracetemol/ibuprofen.

Op and others need dental treatment which they cant get. No one is withholding treatment, it just doesnt exist.

The hospital wont be seeing any GP referrals, no routine appointments will get seen. Most hospitals dont have a dental section and maxfacs arent doing any work accept cancer. Going to hospital is not a magic portal to getting treatment.

Mrsmorton · 18/04/2020 14:37

@ponchek is that the site that's charging £60 for information/advice almost every other dentist is giving for free? Didn't go down very well amongst the dental community!

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 18/04/2020 14:40

@isabellerossignol if you were struggling to breath a&e should have treated you. Yes theg vant offer pain releif to go home with but they should drain your swelling

Bearnecessity · 18/04/2020 15:34

Thank you Mrs M ....sounds like sensible advice....I'm off to do every other job under the sun until I can crank up enough gumption to do it...such a coward...

isabellerossignol · 18/04/2020 15:55

@isabellerossignol if you were struggling to breath a&e should have treated you. Yes theg vant offer pain releif to go home with but they should drain your swelling

In their defence, they couldn't find anything to drain. I had gone to A&E thinking I had had an allergic reaction, because my entire face had swollen and I couldn't breathe and had developed excruciating pain in my head and jaws. They didn't even suggest that a dental problem might be the cause. although with hindsight I do wonder why not, because they had done X rays and one of those scans where you have to stick your head in a big tube...But it was more about the fact that if you end up in pain outside of 'office hours', be that with a tooth abscess or a broken leg, all you get is 'sorry about that. Ring your GP on Monday', which I think is really cruel.

Bearnecessity · 18/04/2020 16:12

I did it was delighted with myself for a good 5 mins before it fell out. Such a small amount of filler in the packet and quite a large hole in a tricky place. Pants.

Mrsmorton · 18/04/2020 16:13

It might be that the hole is all the wrong shape. Worth trying though. You'll get more dexterous!!

AtrociousCircumstance · 18/04/2020 17:51

Has probably been said already but:

OIL OF CLOVES.

It works. It numbs the pain. I will never forget the unspeakable agony of a broken root canal. Nor will I forget the astonishment and relief I felt as the oil of cloves numbed it away.

ponchek · 18/04/2020 23:02

Wow why are some of you so aggressive?

I suggested A and E only because at my local hospital (admittedly v good university hospital, though I didn't think that should make a difference), when my friend had exactly extreme dental pain with a huge swollen abscess, we went to A and E and she was dealt with - the guy drained it and made her an appointment to come back and have further treatment. So please don't be so bloody snappy, some of you - OP is in a state and I just offered advice based on my experience at our hospital with a friend.

As for online consultation ok forget it - I haven't tried it and not recommending anything.

Just because of the virus doesn't mean there should be no treatment for a dental emergency.

12stepCAKE · 19/04/2020 09:17

Hi all. Me again. Sorry I've been juggling work and the kids and tooth ache. I managed to get some temporary filling paste. Pain hasn't gone completely but definitely dulled down so I'm guessing the nerve is exposed. I tried it before and it fell out but it seems to be staying put this time. Think I moulded it a bit better

OP posts:
Thisisworsethananticpated · 19/04/2020 09:38

Well done
Dulled down whilst awful is slightly easier to live with

TheMaddHugger · 19/04/2020 10:18

is that the paste you got ?

HughGrantsHair · 19/04/2020 10:38

My cracked tooth is so awkward a temporary home filling wouldn't work. I had a couple of days if relatively pain free days this week but it's coming back again.

I had to get more cocodamol from the chemist and the lady on the counter said "only take these for 3 days". I said I've got a broken tooth, exposed nerve and dentists are shut. Not going to happen.
