Excruciating dental pain

12stepCAKE · 16/04/2020 19:27

Hello all. I have a broken tooth. It's broken in half. I'm in excruciating pain. I have already had one log of antibiotics and it didn't help. I have tried every potion and OTC medicine available. Nothing helps. I feel like I'm going crazy. We don't have a dental hub set up yet.

I really don't know what I'm asking but Amy advice please?

I am in so much pain I would pull it out myself (obviously not going to do that)

Thanks

Thanks. I will stick to what I'm doing. My dentist isn't interested in prescribing anything else. I was due a root canal on it but because of the virus I had to cancel as we were self isolated for 14 days as my son had symptoms. Then I couldn't get another appointment then they used down. my one year old keeps headbutting me and she did it one too many times and the tooth have up and broke.

I will just have to ride it out and keep taking the meds I have. There isn't anyone in our area seeing patients and I can't travel 4 plus hours as DH is a key worker and I. Trying to work from home with the kids too... I will be forewvry greatful when this is all over and I see a dentist. Hope I don't lose another because of this. There's not much space between this tootha Nd my molar and that one needs a root canal too so I hope it doesn't get infected and that one gets worse too!

"its the point of not taking them anywhere"

Sitting in a car, with the odd leg-stretch and wee somewhere quiet, is not going to be much risk, and it's by far offset by the benefit of you no longer being in pain and/or at risk of more serious infection. If you set off early you could hopefully be back by early evening, or someone could cover for your DH (as they presumably had to while you were all self-isolating). I know you're supposed to be working too but how much are you getting done while you are in agony?! Sometimes you need to do what you need to do and sod the massive inconvenience.

Magicbabywaves · 17/04/2020 14:02

You have my sympathy. In spades. One of my molars is agony, has been for three days now, my dentist prescribed me antibiotics this morning although I’m not 100% sure I need them. Also on ibuprofen/para/codeine (not at the same time!) but nothing touches it really. It’s becoming upsetting as nothing can be done for maybe more than 3 weeks.

12stepCAKE · 17/04/2020 14:09

Well I called the place that the dentist told me to try and it's telephone advice only anyway so that's no use anyway as I've had the telephone advice. I need it removed. Just have to ride it out.

I have a question though. Not sure if anyone would know the answer. Will it fall out on its own eventually? It's decayed inside. So I think the pain is from being open and exposed. It's very stuck in my gums. So I know it won't fall out in the next few days but how long can a tooth stay fixed in your mouth before it give up. I'm hoping sooner rather than later.

OP posts:
Mrsmorton · 17/04/2020 14:16

Well, eventually it could get loose but... that's not a great plan.

I'm hoping that after all of this, the government and the public see the value of prevention and how really awful problems like posters on this site are having, could almost all be prevented with a bit of investment and a better contract that allows dentists to spend time working with patients to stop them getting decay in the first place.

Mrsmorton · 17/04/2020 14:18

Some get loose, some don't. It's really not the medium to long term plan you need to rely on OP. Even once the pain has gone this time, it will probably be back so you need to try to get it treated ASAP.

Notapheasantplucker · 17/04/2020 14:20

It will probably break off leaving the root behind. Try using mouthwash and salt water and don't eat on that side until you can get it sorted, try to avoid it breaking off any more.

12stepCAKE · 17/04/2020 14:26

Ok thank you Mrs Morton. I can't see it falling out any time soon anyway. I have very strong roots and lucky they are straight. Just hope this is only another 3 weeks then back to normal but I don't think so some how

Scruffyoak · 17/04/2020 14:31

Please insist on being seen. I had this and an infection spread to my jaw and it was torture :(

12stepCAKE · 17/04/2020 14:36

Scruffy no one is being seen. I have called so many dentists, 111, out of hours, a couple of dentists on here have advised. I have insisted but there isn't anyone to do it where we live. The hubs only seem to be in the main cities and that's not an option for me right now. I'm staying positive and just coping with it until my dentist opens. I'm also not in a position to pay crazy money either so options are very limited

Chrisinthemorning · 17/04/2020 14:42

The hubs are being set up, I was contacted today about working in a cold hub seeing patients with no COVID symptoms for non aerosol generating procedures. Standard PPE so no FFP3.
In my opinion anything in the mouth has potential to be aerosol generating so I won’t be working without FFP3. I also think the guidelines have been massaged by PHE to suit the PPE they have available.
Flowers OP, hope you get relief soon.

Chrisinthemorning · 17/04/2020 14:43

No way it will be 3 weeks and then back to normal😳

12stepCAKE · 17/04/2020 14:53

Well hopefully they will get PPE then?

OP posts:
RobinHumphries · 17/04/2020 14:59

Chrisinthemorning have you filled in the BDA survey?

It’s not just the lack of PPE it’s the fact that most dental procedures generate an aerosol so it’s how do we decontaminate the air in our surgeries? There is a huge risk we will be spreading the virus

12stepCAKE · 17/04/2020 15:07

My dentist said that when they do.eventually open the hubs they will only see one patient an hour for basic extractions so they can then disinfect inbetween

No it’s very unlikely to fall out unless you have very advanced gum disease. Since you were due to have root canal treatment and the tooth is decayed it is probably the nerve being extra sensitive. The nerve might eventually die off but you are also at increased risk of getting a dental abscess. But antibiotics won’t help with the pain if there is no current infection. Sounds like there are a few option open to you if the pain becomes unbearable. You must have a high threshold for pain!

12stepCAKE · 17/04/2020 15:24

I am lucky that I do. I have given birth 4 times with no pain relief. Breastfed with broken nipples, broke an ankle amongst other things and managed to cope with it. But tooth pain is something else!!! I would rather any of the above over this any day!

OP posts:
Chrisinthemorning · 17/04/2020 15:30

Yes I did the survey today but I answered I don’t know to lots of it. I know the hub I was asked about wasn’t going to have level 3 PPE though so it’s a no from me.
I’m home schooling DS while DH works from home anyway so it’s not really practical to go back to work. I could send DS to school as we both qualify as key workers (DH is banking) but that’s a risk too.
There’s a hot hub in the dental hospital and they will have fit tested FFP3.
To be honest I’m thinking about a career break for a year or so while this all plays out. I don’t need the money that badly that teeth are worth that level of risk!

@12stepCAKE have you seen this message Today 10:48Kit19 ?

oil of cloves might help worked for dd and my husband when all else failed.

HughGrantsHair · 17/04/2020 16:36

I'm going through similar.

Broken tooth. Pain for weeks now. Dentist can't do anything other than prescribe me antibiotics.

She said that because the tooth is broken tbey can't extract it at the moment because it's not a straight forward extraction and would need a drill.

I was told on the phone that it sounds like the nerve and it should die after a while. She might have been having me on to get me off the phone though Wink I'm 4 weeks in now. And after a week of taking maximum cocodamol the pain has calmed down. I've only had to take cocodamol once today.

Until I have a swollen face from infection they won't do nothing. I'd rather be knocked out and just cut it out if I'm honest Grin

12stepCAKE · 17/04/2020 17:27

I feel your pain!

I had an abscess over Xmas and couldn’t get into drs at all. I used this website i-gp.uk/ who sent a private prescription for antibiotics direct to a pharmacy. Looks like they are still open and it’s literally just an online checklist to fill in. Prescription was issued on the same day. Consultation was £10 and prescription was £8 so the same as an NHS emergency appt.

Good luck!
