Excruciating dental pain

12stepCAKE · 16/04/2020 19:27

Hello all. I have a broken tooth. It's broken in half. I'm in excruciating pain. I have already had one log of antibiotics and it didn't help. I have tried every potion and OTC medicine available. Nothing helps. I feel like I'm going crazy. We don't have a dental hub set up yet.

I really don't know what I'm asking but Amy advice please?

I am in so much pain I would pull it out myself (obviously not going to do that)

Thanks

Might be worth going to A&E. The Government health man yesterday said they DO want people to go if they need it and they are worried too many peoplel are storing up problems by not seeing doctors (and the NHS Is not by the way over whelmed currently)

12stepCAKE · 17/04/2020 10:26

I was told by 111 not to go to a and e unless my face was swollen and struggling to breathe otherwise I would be turned away

Thank you Pon I will have a look

@ponchek I had a look. Thank you. But £60 for an online consultation is more than I can afford right now. Saving that money to have the blasted thing taken out. When my dentist opens again it will cost me £150 to have it removed

Im avoiding co codamol. I have taken it in the past and it didn't agree with me. Made me feel.drunm like and didn't help with the pain. I will keep doing what I am doing and will try and see a dentist as soon as they open. Thanks all

I would be travelling the 4 hours plus to a dental hub if thats the only option. Kids can cope in car if they have to - story cds, eye spy, whatever it takes. This level of pain is a serious emergency, you cant carry on like this!

AntiSocialDistancer · 17/04/2020 10:39

I would also present to A&E - I'm sure no doctor could turn you away without providing serious pain relief.

opalescent · 17/04/2020 10:39

@Tootherty Would you be kind enough to let me know the details of where you were seen? I have a sore tooth and am going out of my mind with worry that it will need treatment & I will be stuck. Thank you!

nitgel · 17/04/2020 10:43

when i've had this type of pain i've use neurofen with codeine (over the counter) and paracetamol, though dentist usually prescribes mmetronidazole too and it takes a while to work but usually does.

Have you tried the usual oil of cloves?

Likethebattle · 17/04/2020 10:45

Look up the maximum ibuprofen you can take. In Spain they give you 600mg whereas over here it’s a poncy 400mg maximum space you can take more of them but please do not overdose on Paracetamol it’s very easy to do it with just a couple of tablets. They used to send you to an emergency dentist via nhs24 as I’ve been before and taken my mother. This fucking virus!

Likethebattle · 17/04/2020 10:48

Also do not put heat on it as it can draw the infection into the facial tissue. Cold only.

Kit19 · 17/04/2020 10:48

this has been no use OP?

www.esht.nhs.uk/service/emergency-dental-service/

Im so sorry you're going through this. I suffer from bad dental problems and I would be going out of mind. I wouldnt give a toss what 111 say, I'd be at A&E by now

currentlychilled · 17/04/2020 10:48

That's shocking that there is an online dentist charging £60 per consultation! That's so appalling. Every dental practice in the country has been asked to provide a telephone /online consultation anyway. And we aren't all charging!!!!! We hope that by continuing to offer an online triage, we are taking the pressure off NHS24 just now.
We can provide analgesics, strong ones if necessary, antibiotics, amc can refer to central hubs.
How dare someone offer an online service and attempt to profit from it. I might understand it if he sourced the correct masks and equipment and actually did treatment...
sorry, that's made me really angry.
OP in your case I would phone your own dentist back and at the very least demand strong painkillers and ask what the latest is regarding referrals.
And again, write to your MP.

currentlychilled · 17/04/2020 10:50

In Scotland the SDCEP guidelines have been amended to 600mg ibuprofen instead of 400mg, but that is on advice of a dentist first

LaurieFairyCake · 17/04/2020 10:51

I would have pliered it out long before now Thanks

TheHarryFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 17/04/2020 10:56

I would travel to the hub, OP, four hours or not. Put kids in the car and get dh to drive if they will see you. It won’t be the most fun day out they’ve had but won’t be the end of the world and you can’t go on like this.

TheHarryFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 17/04/2020 10:57

I do get it! I have four dc too. I would totally think a day in the car won’t kill them

12stepCAKE · 17/04/2020 11:07

Thanks all. It isn't the drive I'm worrying about its the point of not taking them anywhere. We have stuck to social distancing to a tee and self isolated due to illness. Plus DH is a key worker and needs to work in the evening so it rear is t possible. I'm lucky I have a high pain threshold. I'm going to hold out until Monday as it's DHS day off then see if anything has changed or if I can see some one. I appreciate all the advice. yesterday I was going out of my mind. It hurts today but I will cope with it

I have massive gum ache and my face has swollen. I can't even work out which tooth is causing the problem, they all hurt right now. I'm several days into antibiotics and the pain isn't any less although I do think the lump may have shrunk. I've only got three days left of paracetamol and I can't take ibrufen because it makes me wheeze. I don't know what will happen next and to make things even trickier, I'm meant to be shielding - I've just got my fingers crossed that it gets better.

Romeojuliet · 17/04/2020 11:21

Currentlychilled - I can actually see why private dentists might need to charge - they have been given no additional financial support (and indeed less as no rates relief) than any other business. According to the Sunday times 1 in 5 may go bust. My dentist is not charging. But if they get treated like any other business - I guess some may have to behave like them in order to survive (and provide continued employment to staff). Nhs ones I believe are getting financial help so they presumably should not be charging?

MorrisZapp · 17/04/2020 11:26

When I had an abscess as a teenager my mum had to wrestle the pliers out of my hand as I was determined to pull the fucker myself.

If I had pulled it, what would have happened? I sometimes wonder this. Its Americans I feel sorry for. No nationalised health care, hence why their pharmacies look more like hospital supply shops.

chokerchain · 17/04/2020 11:38

I can understand that private dentists are getting no government support and may want to charge for a service. However the advice needs to be publicised better. Contact your own dentist first, whether private or NHS. They will have access to your notes, know your history, your background, have inside knowledge into what teeth might be grumbling, know what medications you are taking and what you are allergic to, know if you have a history of drug abuse and are not likely to abuse the system. Don't contact randoms off the internet

Embracelife · 17/04/2020 11:48

Try and get video call with dentist?

user12345796 · 17/04/2020 11:53

I have had toothache this week from a dodgy filling. I know its seriously wrong and I need treatment. My dentist took a lot of details carefully over the phone then prescribed me three days of metronidazole which has stopped the pain. He did say that there was one dentist in the county I could go to who would extract it but I am hoping I can avoid that.

CookieBlue · 17/04/2020 11:59

Hi OP. Not sure where abouts in Sussex you are. We’re Kent and I know that there is an emergency dental department (still open and seeing people) at the Queen Mary’s hospital in Sidcup.

Chemists can also give much stronger painkillers over the counter for dental pain.
