Why are the one show and this morning still on? With guests?

Just turned into bbc and I'm surprised the one show is still on every night and live! They've even had guests in the studio (gabby Logan tonight!) and random guest presenters with Alex Jones each week!

I'd be hard pressed to argue that this was essential journalism...

Similarly with this morning...

When the rest of us are being told to only go to work if we cannot work from home!

It just seems unnecessary to me!

People can get their news from the radio
Umm...radio presenters are also in studios with production staff...
(Leaving aside the bonkersness of the suggestion for other reasons...)

Ipadipod · 14/04/2020 21:19

I was wondering who does Ruth Langsford’s hair and makeup for her appearance on This Morning, and Eamon’s hair isn’t looking as if it hasn’t been cut for weeks and weeks.

Confusedasusual78 · 14/04/2020 21:20

I think it helps to have This morning on, for me anyway, it does keep some sense of normality and comfort about things 🤷‍♀️

ChicChicChicChiclana · 14/04/2020 21:23

I'm not arguing for wall to wall news at all, where did I even say that?

Just saying live TV is not essential. I can't even see why it's a priority.

Radio is far less production heavy. Takes far fewer personnel. The presenters can all do it from home if necessary.

cardibach · 14/04/2020 21:28

Why would it look like it hadn’t been cut for weeks and weeks though, Ipad? We’ve only been in this situation for 3 weeks. There will be many people who wouldn’t have had their hair cut in that time anyway.

Rummikub · 14/04/2020 21:33

I watched the Steph Show thinking that she was on her own broadcasting. However, she had a sound guy outside and about three people set up in her garage. I imagine it'd be easier to social distance in the studio.
I agree with other posters that those types of shows bring normality to a crazy time. The other, worthwhile, thing they do is have a doctor on to answer viewer questions and to myth bust.

Ipadipod · 14/04/2020 21:33

cardibach it’s just most men I know get a haircut every 2 or 3 weeks and it’s noticeable if they don’t iyswim.

Rummikub · 14/04/2020 21:35

Oh and they showed Ruth give her fringe a cut on air. She was shown how by video link to a hairdresser they usually have on the show. It's dross tv but easy to watch and important to maintaina sense of continuity I feel.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 14/04/2020 21:40

I was just saying what would be the alternative?
If we're not allowed any "froth and bollocks" or "non essential" programmes.
Only the news?
You're left with only news programmes. That's a lot of time to fill and will really help people like pp's Nan.
Or maybe instead of rolling news programmes we should bring back the test cards for between programmes or the girl with the clown
shows age

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 14/04/2020 21:41

Should be a Not. After pp's Nan sentence lol

AnnieP1 · 14/04/2020 21:43

Wow, just wow. This Morning provides light relief to many, me included, in these awful depressing scary times. From most of the posts on here we are supposed to be locked in our cells watching 24 hour news on a repeat loop all bloody day just waiting to catch the virus and probably die or causing others to die by infringing the rules as passed by Mumsnetters. I despair I really do, Mumsnet has become truly horrible over the past weeks with all the vitriol spewed just about everything that approaches being lighthearted or enjoyable.

Macncheeseballs · 14/04/2020 21:44

I agree op, they should not still be filming

shellshock77 · 14/04/2020 21:47

I don't understand it either.

Yes they can sit 2 metres apart, but what about sharing toilet facilities/equipment etc. This is non-essential. If someone working there gets ill and needs a ventilator it could have been avoided imo.

Caplin · 14/04/2020 21:48

I think it can be pretty important to keep these things going.

The One Show has ‘merged’ with Watchdog and they are going hard on consumer issues during covid. My Mum is going to be on tomorrow after Hoseasons ballsed up her holiday cancellation. She got a full refund today as a result.

As for Gaby Logan, she was probably just in doing other stuff anyway.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 14/04/2020 21:48

I agree op, they should not still be filming

Why? If like in This Morning via video links?
Who is it harming?

Mammyloveswine · 14/04/2020 21:49

Lots of interesting views!

There are also lots of prerecorded films and series that could be shown and many shows can be broadcast somewhat via video links!

Thank you everyone for your comments!

I can see some merits but I'm not hugely convinced but many are and it's still on so to those who enjoy watching I do hope it brings some much needed relief!

I'm going to watch "Quiz" as thoroughly enjoyed the first part last night!

Lots of box sets also available on catch up that ive been enjoying (when I get a chance!).

I expected the schedulers to up their game. But this isn't the case. I think that some people forget the importance of tv for people. It is company for many. And especially so now. Familiar friendly faces. I think if things were too are then lockdown would not be sustainable. It is difficult enough as it is without anything light and current being removed too.

RedSheep73 · 14/04/2020 21:51

Why are they even on anyway? I'm not nearly bored enough to consider watching either yet

Caplin · 14/04/2020 21:51

And why shouldn’t they be filming. There are tons of live links and they need gallery manager to sort that. Some broadcast jobs can’t happen from home, and current affairs broadcasters are seen as essential. It is a softer way to spread key messages.

Rummikub · 14/04/2020 21:53

*"if things were too hard then lockdown would not be sustainable"

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 14/04/2020 21:56

Err..... because we're not all you and some of us like watching them?

peachgreen · 14/04/2020 21:59

The One Show is the BBC's flagship live current affairs broadcast. It's considered essential. I didn't watch it before but have been since lockdown began because it helps me to feel connected to the wider UK community.

The BBC released a fantastic press release about what they'd be broadcasting and why, which outlined why the content of The One Show is so important. They're doing everything they can to practice strict social distancing and I for one am very grateful they're still going.

SoupDragon · 14/04/2020 22:00

Why is it so outrageous to minimise live TV for now

They are minimising it.

Lexijayde44 · 14/04/2020 22:03

I guess it "lifts" people's spirits who are home and want to connect to life still. I haven't watched either of them. I always find it boring after the first guest on this morning. Once they start cooking etc I'm bored lol

Mammyloveswine · 14/04/2020 22:20

@peachgreen I'll look that press release up, thank you!
