Why are the one show and this morning still on? With guests?

Just turned into bbc and I'm surprised the one show is still on every night and live! They've even had guests in the studio (gabby Logan tonight!) and random guest presenters with Alex Jones each week!

I'd be hard pressed to argue that this was essential journalism...

Similarly with this morning...

When the rest of us are being told to only go to work if we cannot work from home!

It just seems unnecessary to me!

It was in fact, a load of froth and bollocks.
Nice to know they've not changed their format in view of the current pandemic. Grin

Mammyloveswine · 14/04/2020 20:27

I do enjoy the shows it just strikes me as odd that they are still on?

Like a pp said why not loose women?

Ant and decs Saturday takeaway was at first broadcast in the studio just them then from home for the last few episodes?

Could this morning and the one show not do similar?

think I may have missed the point here, but why are they both still on - period? This Morning is dire at the best of times and just consists of lots of giggling and silliness whenever someone in this house (not me!) turns it on

Surely you realise that not everyone thinks like you, you think TM is dire. Others don't. I find it really puzzling when people seem to think everyone should think the same as them.

nanbread · 14/04/2020 20:31

But why is Loose Women (load of old bollocks) not allowed to broadcast live when This Morning (more bollocks) is?

Phil and Holly explained this on their first show after lockdown. Basically, unlike Lorraine and Loose Women they are deemed as an essential service as they cover the news and topical subjects and have regular slots for eg doctors and psychologists who can offer relevant advice.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 14/04/2020 20:33

Like a pp said why not loose women?

Just a guess, but maybe it'd be harder to social distance when there's so many of them on the panel (isn't there about a half a dozen lol)
You'd need a desk stretching the length of the studio and a ruddy good camera to fit 'em all in at the same time Grin
With TM there's only two of them so easier to keep apart and can link up to the contributors who are cooking or dancing or whatever,
Loose Women is lots of people just talking at each other.
Hard to get a word in edgeways sometimes when they're all sat in front of each other, can you imagine 6 of them all linked up at the same time via video link and possible time lag?! Grin
Logistics and all that I'd have thought would have been a factor.

LilacTree1 · 14/04/2020 20:42

nanbread thanks, that makes much more sense.

Ravenesque · 14/04/2020 20:49

I think that any show that can be kept on is a good thing for the people who watch it. I never watch This Morning and I only occasionally catch a bit of The One Show, but I'm sure that for a lot of their usual audience the continuity is helpful and that they are getting something from being able to watch a show that they usually watch.

TV is a part of the daily routine for a lot of people and where "normality" can be maintained it's helpful to a lot of people. The majority of us are struggling at least some of the time and anything that helps with that is a good thing.

Everything is odd, so it would be nice to have some normality that does not have pearls clutched at it for some nonsense reason.

TigerQueenie · 14/04/2020 20:49

And you feel that strongly that you're still tuning in to watch the one show every day?

Cosyjimjamsforautumn · 14/04/2020 20:51

How do they get their hair and makeup done to appear on tv? Do the makeup artists have 2m length arms?

redwinefine · 14/04/2020 20:53

Gogglebox is still on as well - apparently these are key workers. They do have some obvious absences e.g. in one family the dad isn't there but his two sons are and are sitting two metres apart. In Leeds (i think) it's one of the sisters and the bf instead of the other sister.

littlealexhorne · 14/04/2020 20:53

Steph McGoverns been doing a similar programme on Channel 4 since lockdown started, just her alone in her house with guests via video link and thats been pretty good. Eamonn & Ruth could probably easily do the same for TM.

daisypond · 14/04/2020 20:54

Journalists and people involved in public service broadcasting are essential workers and are on the government list.

CallmeAngelina · 14/04/2020 20:54

The presenters are doing it themselves, I believe. Which is why lots of people asked if Piers Morgan had Corona last week, as he apparently skimped on the foundation and looked ill on-screen. Grin

ChicChicChicChiclana · 14/04/2020 20:54

Yanbu op. I never watch either show but am really disgusted to hear they are still on!

People can get their news from the radio.

I was amazed to see studio presenters for the local weather and then regional weather on TV last night after the 10 o'clock news. No fucking way is that "essential".

SoupDragon · 14/04/2020 20:54

If they’re allowed to keep those shows going, then ordinary folk should be allowed to visit other households.

There's a huge difference between a handful of people in a studio/public ally on TV and millions of people socialising in private.

LagunaBubbles · 14/04/2020 20:57

People can get their news from the radio

Its not all about getting news though is it.

hellosunshine5 · 14/04/2020 20:57

I thought the same at first too, and I personally can’t stand either!

BUT my Nan is elderly and lives alone and really relies on programmes like that for some company during the day so from that POV I can understand and agree with them still running.

Yes my Nan could just watch the news but there’s something a bit more inclusive/friendly/sociable about these sorts of programmes.

AgentJohnson · 14/04/2020 21:00

Seriously. Both programs are not my cup of tea but they offer light relief to those who do want to watch them.

As long as people are adhering to

AgentJohnson · 14/04/2020 21:01

I mean programmes.

SoupDragon · 14/04/2020 21:01

What's wrong with a bit of "fluffy" programming? Everything's so grim at the moment.

nanbread · 14/04/2020 21:01

How do they get their hair and makeup done to appear on tv? Do the makeup artists have 2m length arms?

Holly and Phil are doing their own, certainly. Thought Holly did a good job, but you can tell there's a difference. They probably had good briefings beforehand. I was quite disappointed tbh, wanted one of them to come out looking like Aunt Sally.

People can get their news from the radio.

Yeah good point, why don't they just be done with it and ban TV altogether 🙄

(Not everyone has a radio...)

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 14/04/2020 21:02

People can get their news from the radio

There's more to life than just the news though!

Yes my Nan could just watch the news but there’s something a bit more inclusive/friendly/sociable about these sorts of programmes

Exactly. Although maybe you should get your Nan told we're only allowed day long rolling Sky News type 24/7 programmes now and News at 10.

ChicChicChicChiclana · 14/04/2020 21:14

Why is it so outrageous to minimise live TV for now - when schools, shops, everything else except absolutely essential services are shut down?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 14/04/2020 21:15

We really don't need wall to wall news! I don't like This Morning or The One Show but many people do so what's the harm?

ProtectAll · 14/04/2020 21:16

I rarely watch the one show, unless I am in the kitchen cooking and I am never at home to watch This Morning (still wfh now), however I understand why they are necessary.

Talking with acquaintances and reading on here many people just don’t watch the news, even now. These programmes help spread the word.

Then if you had ever tried to watch BBC News (or other channels) you will find that it is very repetitive even now or maybe especially now as the only story is Coronavirus.

There is a lot of talk about mental health, compliance of the stay at home message and supporting the elderly, these programmes play a part in this providing entertainment and some normality for those used to daytime tv.

Having the presenters in the studio for a live programme continues with the normality and also helps the flow, I am sure risk assessments have been done.
