Why are the one show and this morning still on? With guests?

Just turned into bbc and I'm surprised the one show is still on every night and live! They've even had guests in the studio (gabby Logan tonight!) and random guest presenters with Alex Jones each week!

I'd be hard pressed to argue that this was essential journalism...

Similarly with this morning...

When the rest of us are being told to only go to work if we cannot work from home!

It just seems unnecessary to me!

Yep, I can't have a family member look after my son (nursery shut down) so both DH and I can do our frontline jobs without alternating between working and childcare and very very little sleep to the point of weeks Grammy dangerous exhaustion, but the one show can have guests.....

I'm just surprised that they are still going when they are not essential, skeleton staff or not!

And yes I know Gabby sat away but she will still have travelled to get there! And I'm not sure why when most of the other guests are via Skype!

Plus having differing presenters with Alex each week!

It just strikes me as odd that they are still going ahead daily.

@WotchaTalkinBoutWillis I haven't been watching this morning religiously because I've been working from home, still going into school to teach and looking after 2 small children, however when I last watched it AFTER LOCKDOWN they had a guest hairdresser on.

It's not publicly shaming pondering on bloody Mumsnet!

I think these programmes serve a useful purpose.
Loose Women, for example (which I hate, but anyway..) is currently showing pre-recorded shows. That just serves to remind us all where we're at. Not good.
When I've come across lice showings of This Morning or The One Show when scrolling through the channels, it normalises these strange times.
I find that reassuring.

It’s the same one rule for them and one rule for us.

I think I may have missed the point here, but why are they both still on - period? This Morning is dire at the best of times and just consists of lots of giggling and silliness whenever someone in this house (not me!) turns it on. And The One Show is just the most bizarre mixed up program ever! Neither can be classed as news but I struggle with the 'light hearted frothiness' definition as well!

I love this morning. I wish I wasnt home schooling and could watch it more! Bit of light hearted froth and a bit of happiness does me good! What else would they put on? Yet more re-runs of other rubbish?

*Broadcasters are essential workers. They are functioning with absolutely minimum staff and sticking to social distancing. I am grateful that there is at least something that’s not news on TV.

I think that'll be a big reason why it's still on.
It's a bit of lighthearted fun, therefore boosting mood, and as you say normalises things for a bit.
I don't watch Loose Women but sometimes see it when it comes on after This Morning before I switch off - definitely strange seeing old episodes as it's usually live.
Programmes like This Morning on keep a sense of "normalcy"

I need programs like This Morning atm. I don't have to particularly concentrate on them so I can do a bit of crochet at the same time and it takes my mind off what's happening around me. I need normality because my son is on the frontline in A&E day in and day out and it scares the life out of me.

If you don't want to watch turn over but let those of us who do crack on while we can, please.

Tbh I’d have nothing to say about this if ordinary humans weren’t subject to the things we are.

Did you miss what people have been saying?
That it keeps a bit of normalcy?
That they want a bit of light relief?
Why is people's mental health and wanting to stay positive/not think about the news for a bit/a distraction non essential?

I believe the One Show at least, is following strict guidelines about keeping people 2 metres away from each other at all times. Before lockdown began Chris Ramsey was a guest presenter and he spoke about the experience on his podcast the following week. Said there was staff with measuring tapes and if it looked like he was getting too near to someone else, he'd be reminded of the 2 metre rule.

I agree with CallMeAngelina and foodandwine (and the person they quoted but I can't find the post!) As long as the rules are being followed stringently, and no one is forced to come in if they don't want, I don't have an issue with it

I don't really care whether these shows are on or not.

But why is Loose Women (load of old bollocks) not allowed to broadcast live when This Morning (more bollocks) is?

If shows are deemed essential because of news content, I fail to see how TM fulfils that requirement. Unless 'make your own home spa!' or 'what to watch on tv!' are suddenly important enough to have presenters linking from a studio.

You might not like the shows but for some people they are 'maintaining morale'

I think that it is a trade off between safety and morale.

Many people would find the day hard to get through without this kind of programme and it also sends the message that things are “not that bad.”

Similar to British submarines being told to tune in to R4 in the event of nuclear war to check whether the UK is still functioning.
