US opening up the economy; very confused.

Hi there, I'm currently living in the United States and as everyone here probably knows, we have the most cares of covid as well as most deaths so far.

I just got news today that governors from 8 states most heavily impacted (which I'm living in one of them) will be opening up the economy very soon.

These states even include New York.

I'm here sobbing because I'm watching the U.K. and France stating that they're both extending their lockdowns until May 11.

I'm very confused, concerned, and wondering why my country is taking a rather different approach to this virus compared to France and the UK.

I have a toddler that wants to go back to school, play with his friends; and I feel so alone in that if everyone is out and about, back to school, if I don't do it, that he will be delayed or I will be harshly judged as overreacting.

I feel lost in so much contradicting information, and I just wanted advice about if I'm being unreasoned for sobbing about the news today.

Which states are these? Our governor is saying it's unlikely school will be back in session before the fall.

YouTheCat · 13/04/2020 23:32

Don't do it. Better to be alive. YANBU and it isn't your fault that Trump is an idiot.

In the absence of a government led response / plan the states are all doing this seperately. Trump needs to follow other federations such as Germany, Spain and India and impose a lockdown from the top down.

BlackForestCake · 13/04/2020 23:35

It's happening because you are governed by maniacs who do not care if ordinary people die in the hundreds of thousands.

judemom · 13/04/2020 23:43

It would mean that by next week, my husband would be asked to work from the office as opposed to from home like he is now.

I can't stop crying, bc my mother is 70, and my aunts are over 70, and I feel and worry for their safety as well as ours.

Additionally, my friend who is a trump supporter called me a "communist" bc I asked why we are not taking the approach of the U.K. and France , especially since we have more cases and deaths.

I feel very alone and helpless.

Trump can’t it’s against the States rights. Only the State Governor can impose such measures. He would have to be given that power by Congress first or he would face legal challenges.

DracarysThis · 13/04/2020 23:46

What BlackForestCake said.

As for GrumpyHoonMain Trump is allowing Governors to do this because he doesn't want the blame when it all goes arseover, but wants those states to relax restrictions because he and so many of his ilk are money obsessed lunatics.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 13/04/2020 23:49

The governors do need to be working on a plan to reopen states, as it were. The goal has never been no cases, it’s been to have manageable cases. Many states have more than managed their cases and the dire projections are looking less and less likely.

They need to be thinking now about managing the expected cases along with easing back into normality and how they will go about balancing the two.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 13/04/2020 23:53

And remember, just because commerce starts back up doesn’t mean that they’ll be pulling old people out of their houses, people can still continue to self quarantine.

My company went to a work from home 2 weeks before the state did, and I expect they’ll be just as cautious about reopening offices. So I do expect it to be gradual as everyone weighs the risks.

QuantumEntanglement · 13/04/2020 23:54

Calm down OP. I don’t know where you are but as I understand it (from the West Coast) the governors here have formed a kind of coalition as have the governors from the North Eastern states. They are trying to establish their exit strategies. Schools won’t be reopening before the next school year in August/September as far as I’m aware. The governors are talking about a measured slow reopening ie bit by bit, they’re not saying “right everyone back to work tomorrow”. It’s still very much in the planning stages and going to take a good few weeks to get to even a semblance of business as usual from what I’m reading.

PlanDeRaccordement · 13/04/2020 23:56

“why we are not taking the approach of the U.K. and France , especially since we have more cases and deaths.”

I thought Gov. Of NY had extended the lockdown to 29 April? Try not to panic, the article said they are discussing when to lift it. The end of March, Trump was calling for it to be lifted by Easter, and it wasn’t because he has no authority to tell them to lift it. So he’s just asking again.
Also, the death toll is frightening but keep in your mind the fact that the US has a much larger population than the U.K. or France.

globetrotter141 · 13/04/2020 23:56

I'm in the US too. I dont think it says they are going to open up the economy or go back to normal soon , only that they are talking together about it and getting a plan together... No other details that I can see to suggest it's imminent? I think those conversations are also happeining in Europe too. Or have I missed something?!

judemom · 14/04/2020 00:01

Texas is reopening next week, slowly for nonessential workers.

It's just crazy to me after watching New York did grave sites the other day, pleading for PPE's and ventilators, that they're already making plans to reopen.

Maybe I'm overreacting.

QuantumEntanglement · 14/04/2020 00:03

Trump can say ‘Open Sesame’ as much as he likes, it won’t be happening at his behest nor at that of his shiny new task force which includes his useless daughter and her equally useless husband. It’s a bloody joke but they haven’t the power to reopen a stuck jam jar let alone the states. The ones who will really get the say are the governors and I trust the governors to do the right thing.

fallfallfall · 14/04/2020 00:09

I listened carefully to Gov Coumo’s full speech yesterday and he mentioned it would be a coordinated response with the tri states of NY, NJ, and Connecticut based on science. No mention of it being any time soon. As you know the USA is huge, some states have very few cases and have the physical space to isolate cases well think Alaska. So I can see state by state differences and sector by sector with employers providing masks and maintaining personal distancing.

judemom · 14/04/2020 00:09

But if you google new deaths, new cases of covid , it's still going up, not staying stagnant. So why is there talks about reopening the economy already? We don't have it under control, or do we? I am watching the numbers everyday, so when I read the news today, I was completely floored.

Am I missing something here ? I'm also very confused about it coming back even worse when they open the economy.

I feel pressured to just go along with what the government says to do.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 14/04/2020 00:12

Not every state has the population density of NY. They got hit hardest because of the density, mass transportation, and higher rates of travelers. Honestly, it was already cooking there while China was still lying about it.

Texas does have big cities, but they also have more space and sprawl, less public transportation usage, and more rural areas. It doesn’t make sense for the two states to have the same plan. I’m glad there hasn’t been top down federal mandates, because each state knows it’s situation better and can react more appropriately

PlanDeRaccordement · 14/04/2020 00:12

They have to start plans to reopen now because governments are very slow and inefficient. This is not something they can plan to do and then enact within a week.

Leaannb · 14/04/2020 00:15

@GrumpyHoonMain....He doesn't have the power to lockdown the entire US. Our constitution does not allow 1 person to have that much power. Its a part of our checks and balances system

CrocodilesCry · 14/04/2020 00:17

I'm no Trump supporter but there's a lot of misinformation being shared.

Re the grave sites being dug in NYC shown on the news, they weren't graves being dug for coronavirus deaths, they were being dug on Hart Island where people without known family are buried and have been for decades.
Things are being very badly twisted from that footage. NYC has not approved mass burials at all.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 14/04/2020 00:17

A... don’t feel pressured by the government, that’s the good thing about the US, we are dissidents at our core. If your state opens the door you don’t have to go through it.

B...again, this was never about stopping the deaths, it was always about managing it. When you see headlines that say “the death toll is climbing” of course it is, we keep adding to them every day. Look at the data... are the number of deaths per day still climbing or are they remaining at a more or less constant number? What does the exponential rate look like?

C... seriously don’t panic, wait until you see what ‘reopening the economy’ means in your state.

Leaannb · 14/04/2020 00:19

@Judemom.....Each state is going to have different needs and different times to come from under the stay at home orders. Not every state was even under stay at home orders. NY has peaked and their deaths are falling. So have the others. As weeks go by other states will follow.
