US opening up the economy; very confused.

Hi there, I'm currently living in the United States and as everyone here probably knows, we have the most cares of covid as well as most deaths so far.

I just got news today that governors from 8 states most heavily impacted (which I'm living in one of them) will be opening up the economy very soon.

These states even include New York.

I'm here sobbing because I'm watching the U.K. and France stating that they're both extending their lockdowns until May 11.

I'm very confused, concerned, and wondering why my country is taking a rather different approach to this virus compared to France and the UK.

I have a toddler that wants to go back to school, play with his friends; and I feel so alone in that if everyone is out and about, back to school, if I don't do it, that he will be delayed or I will be harshly judged as overreacting.

I feel lost in so much contradicting information, and I just wanted advice about if I'm being unreasoned for sobbing about the news today.

Apparently Trump has "ultimate authority"

Trump must not have passed 3rd grade social studies if he thinks that is true.

BritWifeinUSA · 14/04/2020 02:24

I’m in Washington and we are on lockdown until May 4. Governor Inslee decides when we are no longer under a lockdown order, no one else.

OP, don’t forget that the population of the US is 5 times that of the UK. Looking at deaths per million people, we have a lower rate here. And the UK is only reporting hospital deaths, not care home deaths or deaths at home.

Leaannb · 14/04/2020 02:24

@Purpleartichoke No he can't especially with interstate commerce. 10th Amendment baby. He has very, very limited power. Before he can do anything reguarding the states on this he would have to push thourgh congress and then go through the Supreme Court. He only has the powers specifically laid out in the Constitution. He doesn't get to make them up as he goes and since the Constitution does not specifically give the President Emergency Powers he gets to do nothing. He can call a governor and state his case, offer to give the State additional funds to do as he wants but he cannot make a unilateral decision regarding the States. For example major hurricanes hit my town on the regular. Like every year type of regularity the President can't do a damn thing until our Governor issues a State of Emergency. Until that State says we are needing help the President can't interfere. Thats why states usually call state of emergency a day or two ahead to give the President enough time to get Fema boots down

Leaannb · 14/04/2020 02:26

@HoldmyLobster they are only saying it because Trump has been preaching this shit all day

LilacTree1 · 14/04/2020 02:29

Leannb hope you feel better soon and hope you get to your show.

I’ve got tickets in London for June and July - no chance.

HoldMyLobster · 14/04/2020 02:30

Texas is reopening next week, slowly for nonessential workers.

Where are you getting this from OP?

Leaannb · 14/04/2020 02:36

@HoldMyLobster......Texas Governor. Just one of the 8 states who are trying to get a plan together for re-opening and why Trump has been all over TV,Twitter,Facebook,CNN the garbage that he has absolute Authority over the 50 States

HoldMyLobster · 14/04/2020 02:40

Where has the Texas governor said non-essential workers go back to work next week?

I’m curious to see an actual news story. It’s not in any I’ve read.

Leaannb · 14/04/2020 02:40

@LilacTree1 Thank You for the well wishes. The morphine is most excellent. I'm more upset about my trip to your lovely Midlands. I was suppose to visit my son for the month of July

Leaannb · 14/04/2020 02:52

@HoldMyLobster KXAN.com has it

Leaannb · 14/04/2020 02:54

@Holdmylobster...Once again morphine is most excellent and I hit post too soon. He said they would start off with a very few, select industries but hasn't released which ones yet. A lot of states are trying to open back

Klonda · 14/04/2020 02:57

Trump probably could order a shutdown.

He could do it by executive order, without congressional approval.

It would probably face a legal challenge but (a) I imagine the order would be allowed to stand until its adjudicated on, and (b) it's a Republican-leaning court so they probably wouldn't rule against him anyway.

Governor of Texas states he will reopen slowly, whatever that means.

Meanwhile, experts stated Texas and Florida will be the next hotspot.

Thanks Leaannb - hope you’re better soon.

@Klonda if he were to get that wild hair up his butt the court would immediately issue an injunction. Don't think just because the court leans republican that they would allow that to happen. State rights is one of those things that defines America. You forget the American people fought a war to make sure our country did not live under the all encompassing power of just 1 man. Our very laws are based on that right that is protected specifically by Amendment 10 of our constitution. He does not get emergency powers. He is extremely limited in what he can do. The Supreme Court will not tolerate the Constitution being destroyed. They absolutely will side for state rights just because of the anarchy it would create. Our abortion laws, our gun laws, minimum wage, health insurance, labor laws, driving laws they all come from individual State Rights

Linning · 14/04/2020 06:51

OP please get more accurate news.

A- Trump cannot force state to reopen.
B- Most states, especially the states you stated, have no will to currently reopen the state in the next week.

I am in California, the governor has specifically said California will only reopen at the same time as Washington and Oregon and ONLY when data shows it's safe, which means that despite being the first state in lockdown we will likely be the last to reopen, even without today's speech California is on lockdown until AT LEAST may 3rd (Bay Area) and May 15th for places like LA. When we do re-open, it will be gradual, probably businesses first and then at last, gathering spaces.

Honestly, after two months of social distancing and enforced lockdown, my ideal would be for California to close its borders and re-open gradually sooner rather than later, I feel we've done our part (mostly) and the biggest risk to us now are states who didn't do much (or anything) to stop the spread flying into California and bringing in a second wave.

I know you are scared but the lockdown was never meant to outlive the virus, it was meant to slow the spread so ICUs didn't become overwhelmed, California, normally shouldn't face this problem anymore so it is time to start talking about the after and how to return to normalcy, yes death from Covid-19 is scary but so is death from starvation, suicide and homelessness and those are real issues millions are facing due to the lockdown and lack of social help/care and in the capitalist country that is the US people simply cannot afford to be in lockdown long-term.

You can chose to self-isolate for as long as you wish even when your state re-opens, ultimately it's up to you to be as cautious or not as you feel is right for you and your family.

@Leaannb - sorry you're having a difficult recovery. What was your indication for morphine?

Waves at @HoldMyLobster Smile

Leaannb · 14/04/2020 12:58

@MissConductUS......Extreme chest pain. I literally feel like an elephant is jumping up and down while stabbing my chest with a red hot fire poker

Leaannb · 14/04/2020 13:07

@Klonda....You said he could do it by Executive Order without the approval of congress and he can't. He doesn't have that power

Waves back at MissConductUSA - always good to see you on these threads.

MissConductUS · 14/04/2020 14:01

@Leaannb - I've seen covid patients with chest pain, but none that severe. I'm glad they rx'd you something that works. So many docs are terrified of giving opiates these days. In some hospitals you'd probably have to break into the nearest Pyxsis machine to get what you need.

I hope you and your family are staying safe lobster.

VoiceOfCommonSense · 14/04/2020 14:48

@PlanDeRaccordement

Yeah a lot of people like to jump on the blame Trump bandwagon without any idea of what he can and can’t legally do...

NotEverythingIsBlackandwhite · 14/04/2020 14:52

I'm here sobbing because I'm watching the U.K. and France stating that they're both extending their lockdowns until May 11.
The UK have not stated they are extending lockdowns until May 11. We do know it won't be lifted yet but we will not know the date it will be extended to until Thursday.

I don't know who you think you have seen stating this but it isn't anyone with the power to make that decision. The decision will be made collectively by the members of our Government's cabinet (in the absence of our Prime Minister).
