US opening up the economy; very confused.

Hi there, I'm currently living in the United States and as everyone here probably knows, we have the most cares of covid as well as most deaths so far.

I just got news today that governors from 8 states most heavily impacted (which I'm living in one of them) will be opening up the economy very soon.

These states even include New York.

I'm here sobbing because I'm watching the U.K. and France stating that they're both extending their lockdowns until May 11.

I'm very confused, concerned, and wondering why my country is taking a rather different approach to this virus compared to France and the UK.

I have a toddler that wants to go back to school, play with his friends; and I feel so alone in that if everyone is out and about, back to school, if I don't do it, that he will be delayed or I will be harshly judged as overreacting.

I feel lost in so much contradicting information, and I just wanted advice about if I'm being unreasoned for sobbing about the news today.

Thanks saltines it's what I suspected. We're doing much worse than America. Per 1 million population the only lower death rate than America is Germany. UK, Italy, Spain, all doing badly.

MissConductUS · 14/04/2020 00:44

@PeytonManning Thanks, I try my best. Grin

Trump did not impose nationwide lock down rules, the state governors did. He can't undo something he didn't do in the first place. Public health measures and regulations are left to the states in our system. That's why different states have different vaccination requirements for example. As PP have pointed out the greater NY City area was an early hot spot because of population density and the widespread use of mass transit. The public health measures will be more effective when decisions are made at the state level, as they will be.

SonjaMorgan · 14/04/2020 00:46

So many people are expected to die from issues with the economy op. It is a balancing act and I don't think there is a right or wrong route to taken

Leaannb · 14/04/2020 00:47

@saltinesandcoffecups.....Thats for the whole of US and 8 of them came from my hospital. In those states there has been significant decreases of cases and deaths. NYC has been falling since Thursday

saltinesandcoffeecups · 14/04/2020 00:52

@leaannb

That’s what I’ve been hearing, and am very happy to hear it too.

My state is seeing a weird spike in urban, black, males. Other than that it’s been pretty low. We’ve not hit anywhere near the predictions.

MrSaltines is a FF/Paramedic, he’s been on the Covid team, they are busy, but honestly not anything worse than an average summer day or holiday.

stopgap · 14/04/2020 00:55

I’m in Connecticut. Our schools have been closed since March 11th, and Governor Lamont has identified May 20th for reopening, though indicated that they will likely be shuttered for the rest of the academic year.

We’ve been social distancing in earnest, all essential businesses are shuttered and the tri-state governors need to thrash out a plan before anyone can get back to work or school. Keep doing what you’re doing OP, and you will be fine.

MissConductUS · 14/04/2020 00:56

@leaannb - what state are you in? I'm in the Hudson Highlands, north of NYC. We're okay for PPE and have been told to expect antibody testing for front line hospital staff next week or the week after.

Leaannb · 14/04/2020 00:57

@Saltinesandcoffeecups.....My state is also experiencing the same phenomena. Actually its all young adult males but just slighly bigger uptick in African American males. People are thinking its due to the heavy cannabis useage in those areas because major metropolitans in states that have legalized Cannabis are not seeing that. Im the last positive Covid patient in the hospital

saltinesandcoffeecups · 14/04/2020 01:01

@MissConductUS

You guys are getting antibody testing ?! Damn...that would be nice. I’m tired of reassuring MrSatines that we’ve either had it and didn’t notice, had it and that explains the weird thing we had, or we’re going to get it and it’s not his fault. Poor guy is a wreck thinking he’s going to kill off our neighbors.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 14/04/2020 01:02

Watch China (with a sceptical eye), Italy and Spain to see what they do next. Likely that we/USA will employ the same time frames and methodology as they test how best to lighten lockdown.
Construction for example reopens tomorrow on sites in Spain but with very strict heads per square metre restrictions.
It will all be done on an inch by inch basis.

Leaannb · 14/04/2020 01:03

@Saltinesandcoffeecups.....My home is in Roanoke,NC. Basically the Outer Banks of NC if others are wondering. However, I am hospitalized at Duke currently.

ZenDay · 14/04/2020 01:04

OP There is no need to worry and feel helpless. You don't have to end your own lockdown if you don't want to.

Our population is almost 5 times the size of the UK's so it stands to reason there would be more deaths here than in less populated countries. Btw, our population is 33 times larger than Sweden's!

There is a lot of misinformation, fear-mongering and plain old bullshit from posters on these threads. Our President is fully aware of the U.S. constitution and knows he can not tell governors what to do. We have a decentralized government here. The states will reopen at a different rate because as an example Wyoming's coronavirus situation is not in the same situation as NY's.

Leaannb · 14/04/2020 01:04

I replied to the wrong person @MissConductUSA

saltinesandcoffeecups · 14/04/2020 01:05

Hah... I think we are all done watching China. Everyone else’s numbers seem to rooted in some semblance of reality. So yes I think Italy and Spain will be the ones to watch, the problem is there are so many variables that have to taken into account.

But Italy and Spain are about 2-3 weeks ahead of the US on this particular curve.

user1471439310 · 14/04/2020 01:06

I am in Pennsylvania and our schools are closed for the rest of the year. Is Trump an idiot, yes but he isn't the only one who wasn't up to date on what was happening. First China said the virus couldn't be spread person to person and if so many others thought there was going to be a problem, you can bet it would have been front page news. I am not sure Obama could have done any better. Our governors run the states, they decided if and when to close up.

HerRoyalNotness · 14/04/2020 01:08

Texas isn’t on an official
Lockdown as a state. Some counties are. The county I am in has a stay at home
Order through 1 May minimum. Where have you seen news this has changed?

Why On earth do you believe a word trump says?

Leaannb · 14/04/2020 01:09

@ZenDay You must have missed Trumps all day declaration that he has all authority over the States today. You should check it out. Its quite comical as you have also explained he doesn't have that power. So I know this and you know this me,you and 3 other Americans have educated our very lovely hosts to this fact. But someone really needs to sit Trump down and explain this to him because people are really sick of him screeching that he has absolute authority before he starts loosing supporters

saltinesandcoffeecups · 14/04/2020 01:10

@Leaannb ...no worries. I’m in WI Milwaukee area. Interesting about the link to cannibus usage, nothing really being said here about it the reason yet.

.

AcrossthePond55 · 14/04/2020 01:11

Relax @judemom . Take a deep breath. The Govs are just forming a taskforce to figure out the best way to start things moving again when it is safe to do so. I'm sure part of their focus will also be to create their 'pushback plan' if that ass in the WH decides he has the 'absolute authority' to reopen the states. There is strength in numbers and the Govs want to be sure they're tightly banded together and on the same wavelength. I trust Newsom to protect Californians and Cuomo et all to protect their people, too.

Reginabambina · 14/04/2020 01:11

They probably don’t want people to die from a lack of money?

If it makes you feel any better number of cases is not really relevant, you have a far larger population so you’ll have a far larger death toll. What’s relevant is medical capacity. It’s too late to eradicate covid in affected states without a vaccine so the best they can do is use lockdowns and social distancing to ensure that the caseload stays within capacity. It seems a bit odd to me that they already opening things up but they may be weighing up the loss of life due to the economic consequences of lockdown v the loss of life resulting from slight overcapacity.

@user1471439310 I think all of the World Leaders need to catch a break on this one. Very few of them has gotten it right. In every country there has been the same complaints. Lack of PPE,lack of ventilators, lack of beds. Italy,Germany,UK,Spain,Portugal Brazil etc....
Same exact complaints. The only countries who even remotely handled it well was Japan and South Korea. So ots not Boris's fault and as much as I would absolutely love to blame this on Trump you just can't

@judemom respectfully I think in your stress you haven’t read the article you are posting. I have family in NYC and they aren’t opening up. The governors are just coordinating their plans given how many people commute and work across state lines in the region. There is no date to end the lockdown that I’ve seen, certainly not next week.
