US opening up the economy; very confused.

Hi there, I'm currently living in the United States and as everyone here probably knows, we have the most cares of covid as well as most deaths so far.

I just got news today that governors from 8 states most heavily impacted (which I'm living in one of them) will be opening up the economy very soon.

These states even include New York.

I'm here sobbing because I'm watching the U.K. and France stating that they're both extending their lockdowns until May 11.

I'm very confused, concerned, and wondering why my country is taking a rather different approach to this virus compared to France and the UK.

I have a toddler that wants to go back to school, play with his friends; and I feel so alone in that if everyone is out and about, back to school, if I don't do it, that he will be delayed or I will be harshly judged as overreacting.

I feel lost in so much contradicting information, and I just wanted advice about if I'm being unreasoned for sobbing about the news today.

@Saltinesandcoffeecups....Thats the speculation in North Carolina. Please remember that word and what it means because its litterally just a guess but one that seems to be gaining in strength. Just because of the Cannabis useage and the very, very social aspect of smoking Cannabis

judemom · 14/04/2020 01:22

I'm not in New York or California. I'm in a state that's not doing much of anything like testing. We are opening in a week; slowly for non essential workers.

Thank you for the responses!

Hah... I wish I had faith in my governor, he seems to be flailing about randomly copying other governors at the moment. Does not inspire confidence.

I am happy that he has to have legislative backing to extend it it past 60 days. There is however the problematic broad power given to the state department of health. Not sure that I like someone I never voted for having absolute power without having had the chance to vote for them.

It will be interesting in the next couple of weeks what plays out.

Leaannb · 14/04/2020 01:29

@Cacoaisfarriage. As a boot on the ground nurse in the states at least until I tested positive last night we are finding the exact opposite here. While I know this is bad and its very bad I do question the numbers some. Especially the cases from care homes. We had a 94 yo come in with Stage 4 Prostate Cancer which is super aggressive because he tested positive. Never showed symptoms but tested positive. He died the next day and was labled a Covid death. You have to question that. Did he really die of Covid or the Stage 4 super agressive, non treatable cancer?

LilacTree1 · 14/04/2020 01:30

“ Maybe I'm overreacting.”

Yes you are. NY in particular will be burying people in those mass graves for reasons related to shutdown of this goes on much longer.

Or did he just die? One neighbour died with heart problems, 85, died in hospital, and there was an inquest. Society has lost sight of reality in terms of death. His wife was devastated by the inquest.

Leaannb · 14/04/2020 01:36

@CacacoisfarraigeI'm not sure what you mean by your last statement. That the states are going around Trump. Because they aren't. States do this all the time for many different things. Trump DOES NOT have absolute power. In fact he can do very little when it comes to the states. He can't force the States do shit. If the Presidential Office had the type of power Obama would have done that to push thru a 2 tiered Universal Healthcare System. Meaning at the very least Medicaid for all the people and if you wanted to go private go for it type thing. Very similar to NHS.

@leannb

No worries, I’m not one to run with information that’s unsubstantiated, I promise I won’t take the cannibus thing as gospel... I’m sure it will be studied at some point.

I am hearing the same thing about covid deaths and other causes. That one I am side eyeing currently because the same thing has been going on for years and “smoking related deaths”. (Again from unsubstantiated sources.

Leaannb · 14/04/2020 01:40

Exactly@LilacTree1 was his death listed as Covid related. Please remember I am not trying to minimize this virus. I'm not. I think we are going to be hearing a lot about the crediability of these numbers for years to come.

LilacTree1 · 14/04/2020 01:45

Leann sorry, this neighbour died last year. I just mentioned it because I think the authorities are overly keen to do inquests, presumably because it makes money.

The death of an 82 year old with a known severe heart condition should not be considered for that, especially as he died in hospital.

A friend’s father died of cancer and there was an inquest because the cancer hadn’t followed the patch they expected.

Anyway, I suspect a lot of deaths in people in their 90s will be listed as covid when a chest infection would have killed them - my issue being, it adds to the hysteria.

When dad died, I went to register the death and held my breath with dread they’d do an inquest for him.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 14/04/2020 01:45

Can I just say this has been a breath of fresh air (behind a mask of course). I’m pretty sure this has been the most reasonable discussion I’ve had about Covid.

Thank you all for reminding me that reason and facts exist in the world.

@leanndb wishing you a speedy recovery!

They aren’t always counting the people who die at home as covid-19 who are positive so it will even out.

I’m in Aus (but I’m a kiwi) and either country aren’t seriously talking of opening up yet because money isn’t more important than people or Public Health and we have actually controlled the “curve”.
A large number of infections here came from travellers from the US.

The US are still in a exponential growth stage so it’s seems reckless to “open up” and not expect a 2nd wave.
Unless of course you need it as a ploy to stop elections.

MissConductUS · 14/04/2020 01:52

Autopsies are an important public health measure and we probably don't do enough of them.

Hypertension is looking like an important risk factor in CV mortality and is also more prevalent in minority populations.

Leaannb · 14/04/2020 01:56

@Cacacoisfarraige....I'm not seeing that here

Ny and California have not said they are opening. They are forming commissions to discuss how to re-open.

The us president can’t override state and local stay-at-home orders. He can do things to protect inter-state commerce and if congress cooperates he can use funding to get states to comply. The little show he put on tonight is pure propaganda.

I wish that people who didn't understand the US political system wouldn't engage in this kind of conspiracy driven speculation. Trump's current term runs out the 20th of January of 2021. His only hope of staying in office is for elections to go on as planned and get reelected.

LilacTree1 · 14/04/2020 02:04

Is it likely Broadway would reopen before September? I’m just thinking of that in terms of social distancing.

Leaannb · 14/04/2020 02:08

@Cacacoisfarraige Trump os an idiot and if you believe anything that comes out of the fools mouth then I'm sorry for you. Our Constitution that was written when we decided we did not want to play nicely with King George the 3rd anymore was fought for and written for the explicit reason of not having a President that powerful. Trump can't do shit without Congress and US Supreme Court approving of it. Not to mention the 10th Amendment of the Constitution giving the States of the US the reserved powers. Not the federal Goverment.

Leaannb · 14/04/2020 02:08

@LilacTree1 Lets hope because I have tickets for August 25th

JumboSausage · 14/04/2020 02:11

Apparently Trump has "ultimate authority"

Any links to stories saying that?

HoldMyLobster · 14/04/2020 02:14

Those who think Trump decides when the states open. He said we’d reopen at Easter. Nope.
