US opening up the economy; very confused.

Hi there, I'm currently living in the United States and as everyone here probably knows, we have the most cares of covid as well as most deaths so far.

I just got news today that governors from 8 states most heavily impacted (which I'm living in one of them) will be opening up the economy very soon.

These states even include New York.

I'm here sobbing because I'm watching the U.K. and France stating that they're both extending their lockdowns until May 11.

I'm very confused, concerned, and wondering why my country is taking a rather different approach to this virus compared to France and the UK.

I have a toddler that wants to go back to school, play with his friends; and I feel so alone in that if everyone is out and about, back to school, if I don't do it, that he will be delayed or I will be harshly judged as overreacting.

I feel lost in so much contradicting information, and I just wanted advice about if I'm being unreasoned for sobbing about the news today.

Can anyone here tell me what they think will happen in the U.K. and America IF the deaths and numbers of illness climb rapidly again? Say, for whatever reason such as the economy opening up, or when the weather changes?

Also, it’s not helpful to look at other countries reactions and compare either...just like the differences between the state’s within the US, some of those demographics and geography factors come into play.

Leaannb · 14/04/2020 00:24

@BlackForestCake Yoi have no idea what the hell you are talking about. Not a freaking ckue because if you did you would know ots up to the state governors and since you don't know what state OP is in you have no idea if her state governor is infact a maniac. You would also know that Trump does not have those type of powers. For him to enforce the measures that have been implemented in the UK and Europe not only would he have to get permission from Congress but also the Supreme Court and it wouldn't happen

user764329056 · 14/04/2020 00:24

Because money Trumps lives

PeytonManning · 14/04/2020 00:25

I interpreted it very much as a positive. The 8 Govs are sharing info so as to eventually get back together as they recognize the NE Corridor is a hotspot in a way, say, Nebraska isn’t. They are looking to each other more than they are Federal Govt because of the circumstances.

There is no way they’re going to rush people back to work but there does need to be a plan in action to start returning to normal AT SOME
POINT, that won’t necessarily be at the same point Federal Govt starts it in the less hit states.

Leaannb · 14/04/2020 00:26

@Judemom.....If it happens again before a vaccine is approved we will probably be under Stay at Home orders again. What state are you in?

Peppafrig · 14/04/2020 00:26

Where has the UK,stated they are extending till May 11th? I watched all the briefings and haven't seen that.

PeytonManning · 14/04/2020 00:26

That first sentence should read “so as to get back to normal”

MissConductUS · 14/04/2020 00:27

I'm a New Yorker and an HCP. You're overreacting. They've simply formed working groups of public health officials and governor's staff to coordinate planning. From that NY Times article you linked:

several of the governors who spoke Monday made it clear that they did not intend to let businesses in their states reopen until experts and data suggested it would be safe to do so. They noted that their fates were bound by geography. “The reality is this virus doesn’t care about state borders, and our response shouldn’t either,” Gov. Gina Raimondo of Rhode Island said.

What they want to avoid is a situation where New Jersey reopens restaurants while they're still closed in New York and having people who live near the border all flocking to NJ to eat out. Or having businesses reopen in NY but not have sufficient trains to bring workers in from CT. It's more complicated than you'd think.

Hospitals here have seen the covid treatment burden stabilize or drop off slightly. It would be bonkers to lift restrictions now, just as it would be bonkers to let adjacent states do so without coordination between them when the time comes.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 14/04/2020 00:29

My guess... not based on any sort of magic ball.

I don’t think we’ll see a sharp or dramatic spike. I think we’ll see blips but nothing dramatic.

Here’s my train of thought... large events are already cancelled for the summer...nobody (or company) wants the bad press of being Typhoid Mary, travel will take awhile to kick off to anywhere near normal levels, and a large percentage of the population will continue to be cautious.

Nobody wants to be the guy that yells, “we’re open” and have it blow up in their face so even those who you think are reckless will still be cautious on the approach.

PeytonManning · 14/04/2020 00:31

There is no way NY has peaked yet, no way at all, especially in the city and immediate suburbs of LI, Westchester, Rockland and Orange counties. But upstate possibly has in the current wave.

PanchoBarnes · 14/04/2020 00:31

It's understandable you're worried, and I'll offer a gentle, yabu.

No states are "opening up" the economy right now.
They are discussing when it will be safe to do so.

From your posted link:
[...]
regional working groups to help plan when it would be safe to begin to ease coronavirus-related restrictions to reopen their economies.
[...]
made it clear that they did not intend to let businesses in their states reopen until experts and data suggested it would be safe to do so.
[...]
“This is not going to be a rush-the-gates” situation
[...]
against reopening too soon and risking a second wave of infections.

Trump is (futilely) arguing that he wants the decision to be his own, nation-wide.
(States made their own descision when to lockdown.)

I'm finding it hard to believe that your 'friend' callled you a communist - Trump supporter, or not.
Get new friends.

PeytonManning · 14/04/2020 00:32

Or what @MissConductUS said far more eloquently!

HuloBeraal · 14/04/2020 00:34

I think you are overreacting as well. It is almost widely accepted that all schools in New England are now done for the academic year. Plans doesn’t mean they will reopen any time soon. Plans need to be made regardless.

Leaannb · 14/04/2020 00:34

@PanchoBarnes......If her friend is really a Trump supporter that would be the most believable part of the post. Thats their new "thing" If you aren't a Trump supporter thats what they call you...Communist or a "dirty" socialist.

Lou670 · 14/04/2020 00:35

I am in the UK. Where have you read that the date our lockdown has been extended until the 11th May? I have watched the news a couple of hours ago and nothing was mentioned.

Our review is on this coming Thursday. It will be extended as they are making all the right noises that it definitely will as we are now just starting to peak, never mind plateauing. No date was mentioned though, unless I have missed something.

ToffeeYoghurt · 14/04/2020 00:36

Interesting how it works there. So it wouldn't make a difference if it was Obama, Clinton, or anyone else as president, they don't have the power to decide what each state does in this case?

As a PP says the US population is much bigger than the UK. It's a far larger country. I'd like to know how many deaths they have per 100,000 of population compared to us in the UK.

Leaannb · 14/04/2020 00:37

NYC deathrate dropped significantly over the weekend. Cumo is stating that the worst is over.

newyorker74 · 14/04/2020 00:38

Where are you getting this from? The tri state governor's (plus Delaware, Rhode island) literally said that they are forming a group to plan how to open up and get back to some kind of normal life. Cuomo was specifically asked for a timeline and refused to give one saying they wanted guidance asap but nothing would open back up until they could manage testing etc etc. Noone said anything about next week or next month. Calm down.

Itsjustmee · 14/04/2020 00:38

It’s on the front page of the mail on line

No idea if it’s true as it’s the mail 🤧

This is what worldometer has right now....

US opening up the economy; very confused.

Leaannb · 14/04/2020 00:39

@ToffeeYoghurt It wouldn't matter if Jesus Crist himself was sitting in the Oval. Because the President of the US does not have that power over the States. As much as Donald thinks he has absolute power he doesn't. Which we have you guys to thank for that

judemom · 14/04/2020 00:41

Regarding May 11 for France; May for the U.K.

OP posts:
saltinesandcoffeecups · 14/04/2020 00:42

I think the OP is victim of news headlines...quite frankly they are all crap right now and for the most part should be ignored. Eventually the details and real story comes out, but you have to read the articles and get past the bullshit attention grabbers.
